View Full Version : Creating a Sith

Have been meaning to make a sith costume for ages, but kept getting distracted by various things. But as I just ordered some bits to fix up my saber, I though I had better get my butt in gear (and maybe finish it for The Australian Costumer's Ball).

So far I'm thinking sith assassin sort of theme, but probably without going too ninja crazy.
So lots of black or dark grey, martial arts themed, and probably a mask rather than a generic ninja cowl.

The link above is to my photo album of Costuming Goodness.
The first picture should show the two masks I've been contemplating, as well as the boots I'll probably use and the gauntlets I'm tempted by.

If I can find one of the simplicity jedi ish patterns (or possibly a ninja pattern) I'll probably modify that a little, if not, I have an old Gi somewhere that I can hack up and dye.

As far as an outer layer goes, I'm more thinking tattered cloak/cape rather than jedi style robes.

Hopefully I can add a concept sketch in a bit.

Anyone got tips on making impressive (but durable) tattered effect?
Or other ideas/opinions so far.

Use a controlled setup with a lighter to ignite the fabric, burn it, then put it out.

Keep safety in mind--but this will give a good effect.

Another thing to do--is use charcoal to "score" the cloak in areas. This was/is done in many movies to give a dirty/worn effect on many many many things, such as fabric, faces, setpieces, etc.

You may also try making your costume pieces out of two layers of fabric, then only distress the outer layer. This adds depth and gives a tattered effect without weakening the piece. I find a cheese grater works well for creating realistic holes.

Ok the quick concept sketches are up on the same link.

edit:
If I were to use a heavy partial synthetic, the burn would probably seal the ends too. Nice idea (need ventilation in this case though :D )

Hes working on a clonewars general obiwan style so hes damaging his cloak and such. Theres some great ideas in there about age-a-fying your costume.

Just be carefull and if its got a synthetic blend it may burn like plastics do so just be carefull and alwase try on small pieces first.

Thanks Hasid, that link had some great examples of weathering that I may have to apply to said project.
Update, managed to pic up the dodgy Simplicty pattern set.
Now to modify the hell out of the base tunics.
Also need to decide if the cloak idea would leave me at all recognisable as sith when closed (as opposed to the generic jedi robe).

You know what, screw it.

I'm gonna make a Darth Nihilus costume, based on this image.

Luckily I now have lots of references for tattered robes (thanks guys).

Edit: damn picture, check this link for one that should actually work.

If anyone is interested, my Nihilus mask is almost complete (just need to do a final sanding then pain it), pictures are up on my album (previous link).

Also, I intend to use about 20 metres of black fabric, NOT including the cape & cowl.
Yay for pleated goodness!

Nice work Doddy, is the mask plaster and mache or just mache?

The paper mache is the base, and then much plaster over top, so that I could sand it back to a smooth and rigid finish. The detail work is in DAS (a type of air dry modelling clay).

Yay, more progress done.
The mask is done.
Most of the costume is assembled, awaiting shredding.
Still need to do the hood and cloak.
Only about 12 metres of black fabric around my legs. :D
*edit* pictures are up btw.

My saber is also coming along nicely, as soon as I can get my hands on some buttered toast.

Well, my saber is pretty close to done.
I just need to decide on and implement its finish.

Oh, and I still can't get my hands on a Crystal Focus.

Pictures are up at the usual place:

Well I finally finished my "CotF" Nihilus costume.

And it won me "Best in Show" at the Annual Costumer's Ball.

Just a few shots to give you an idea.
