What is Smoothswing?

With all the Proffie excitement I still don't really understand what smooth-swing is and would like to understand more. Any information or links welcome.

It is an algorithm present on the proffieboard/teensy which gives the most realistic swing sounds currently available. It alters the volume and pitch of the swing sounds based on the speed and orientation of the saber motion. The result is quite impressive.
