I've found a lathe to work with so I thought I'd try and make a custom piece or two. What grade aluminum do you guys use/suggest?

6061 T6 aluminum is the most common (and cheapest). 2024 T351 is aircraft grade - stonger and a bit harder to machine, and definitely more expensive. 6061 is usually extruded and as such has a slightly rougher surface finish and usually is out of round +- .01" give or take. 2024 is usually cold drawn and has a smooth finish and is usually more round with a diameter tolerance of +- .002". I primarily use 6061 because of cost, but if I am going to keep the od of the part the same as the stock I use, then I will pay a little more for the 2024.

why not use titanium? that way you can implant it into your body, like bone transplants or whatever they are.

There is also 7075 Aluminum. Harder than 6061, and also retains it's shine longer without polishing.

I used to have six stainless steel pins in my hips (three in each). I still have them sitting on my shelf as a reminder to not do stupid things - you can still see pieces of bone stuck in the threads.

I've had my femur replaced with a White K2 titanium hilt.

Thanks for the info guys. Off to figure out the diameter of the rods.

do you think its possible to completely remove all, or most of your bones and replace them with titanium replicas? i was thinking if you do that and get carbon fiber skin grafts then that would literally make you a super human.

Uh, no. First off, muscles and ligaments attach to the bones, so where would they attach. Second, and most important, the bone marrow is where new blood cells are made. No bones, no marrow, no blood.
