Common anode vs common cathode

I'm trying to figure out which one i need for my build but i can't seem to figure out the difference between the two types. Any explication would be much appreciated.

I'm trying to wire an rgb led for purple but can't figure out what type to buy.

Common anode means the leds all share a positive lead. Common cathode, a negative lead. I assume you are referring to a 5mm led for crystal or accent? On those, the longest lead is the common lead. Which and how you wire it greatly depends on you electronics solution. More detail will be helpful.

yeah i wanted to wire a 5mm led for a crystal. i wanted to have my first saber to have some flair. im only planning light for this first saber.

For future compatibility you are probably best off using a common anode since most boards will control the LEDs via the cathode.
