I am currently experimenting the luxeon blades in conjunction with a "slider" within the blade for extension / retraction effects. I don't think it would make a good duel blade, but I do believe it could make a nice show blade.

here's what I came up so far:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFwuVfn21zk

I'm open to all comments/suggestions on the matter.

The main idea would be to have a small magnet in the base and the tip of the blade. I still have to figure out how to properly release the bearing.

I don't think this should be used in duel for 2 reason
1- the bearing might get loose of the magnet upon impact and "shut down" the blade.

2- if the tip goes off, you have a metal bearing flying trough the air. I think this is uterly dangerous.

otherwise, I think this isn't all that bad.

what do you think??

That's like the laser system! Like you said, neat but hardly practical.

I keep thinking a electro magnet system would be neat, but implementing that would be extremely hard.

it would work if you found a better sized bearing and put a magnate in the tip. also, the bearing would need to be painted black so that you don't have any "light ball" effect like in your vid

Maul, I agree a better sized bearing - I even mentionned in the post & video. This is a very early test of the faisability of this thing. However, I wouldn't paint the sphere - it would result on the long run in having flakes of paint in the blade.

Xwing: I know this isn't practical, but it is the point of this type of blade.... show, as opposed to duel. For costumed events or conventions, this can come in handy. I'd like to be able to have a working solution that fits within the blade without altering the saber itself... this way you could interchange between the show blade and duel blade. Therefore, I doubt I'll even look at electromagnets for this setup.

So far I figured that the magnet of a dead earbud should do the trick when it comes to holding the bearing at the tip, I need to find a way to hold the bearing at the base and have a release mecanism.

maybe a electro-magnet at the tip of the blade that you can switch off. When you switch it off, the sphere would drop back to the hilt. Just a thought. Prob not possible since the electro-magnet would be to large to fit into the tip of a blade???? Rare earth magnets and neodym magnets are pretty strong, I think. Maybe there is a way to reverse polarity.

I'm kinda confused...So to get the sphere back up, you'd use gravity, I assume? No electro-magnet is small enough to get the ball all the way up the blade.

You believe Bodi and Jedihilt when they say the most unsubstantiated things... yet you question real existing technology like electromagnets?

I will never get you all... :?

Yeah iam confused as all h e twin hockeysticks.

But yeah this berrign thing is just like the lazer one but I dont see an eletromagnet being that small to fit inside the blade for this to be fexable.

Ok, from the led in the hilt, + terminal. Run a very thin piece of copper wire. The wire goes to the end of the blade where a small, 1/8 inch, metal cylinder is. Wrap the wire around the cylinder as much as possible. Then run the wire back down the blade to the negative terminal of the led. Yes, gravity would make the sphere go "up". This is my idea, most likely impossible.

and you will see the wires when blade is lit.

To hold the bearing in place, you COULD try using what would (normally) be blade screws...

One in the emitter that "locks" the bearing down near the optics/blade tube bottom...

One in the poly-c at the top near your tip that locks the bearing next to the tip...

Granted, you would have to stop, get your hex wrench, and/or twist the screw by hand at the tip... while having your saber upside-down if you will.

For SHOW... it'd be fine. And inexpensive. And probably easy to then take out the bearing and just do whatever you like. But I agree that for dueling, you'd still be in trouble. Not to mention, I have no idea about drilling and tapping right through a poly-c tube near its end--you might crack it.

Still... cool ideas. Or just buy Corbin's board... or get Erv's board!! :)

I like the proper blade + dimming effect, but it definately isn't as defined. This is what luxeon's detractor use mainly, in addition to brightness and evenness in the blade.

I still prefer luxeon blades, having electronics in the blade simply weight too much.

plus, I'm part of the flashlight saber mafia. Mouhahaha.

Actually, Mars was one of the FIRST people to buy my boards back when they first came out. He's been doing Luxeon blades for a long time now. He also invented a special type of emitter that I'd love to try and get a CNCd version of for the shop here.

would it be possable to get some pics of said emitter?

Corbin is right, I've been trying to better up the luxeon system for a while now, since before my daughter was born. (of course, I had more time on my hands then, and a fancy work area.)

I should make some vids of my lockup sensor some day. I'd like to be able to tweak this with a sound&light combo.

maybe its time to revive that project.

I'm all for that, Mars!

I had been thinking of an auto lockup detection system for the last 6 months, but I doubt I'll do it unless by me designing a new driver I would offer a lot of value.

I don't want to be a "me too" in the sound/light driver thing. Besides, about 4 designers that I had flaked and/or didn't work out. ANyhow. Grrr... ;)

I know what you mean novastar.

I originally had planned on making my own luxeon driver - when Corbin talked about his luxeon saber driver, I was thinking "why remake something that's already profesionally produced for a decent price??" and I didn't.

hahah... how funny--basically the same happened with me and looking at Erv's board!

I mean, I KNEW about Erv's board, but when I looked into all the features I wanted to offer... I realized that only one or two "new" things would have popped up. So, nothing special.

Besides, Erv's a designer and I'm not.

Ironically, he always tells me how BAD his "saber play" is... well, go figure... he's busy with resistors and capacitors and accelerometers!

I'm busy enough with staged combat... :)
