I finally ordered some MHS parts! Here's what I got:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_parts_1.jpg
I didn't order a hilt section as I'm using the chrome tube from an old hardware saber that was actually my first hand-made saber.
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/hardware_saber.jpg

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_parts_2.jpg
I think you can get the idea of where I'm going with this....

I soldered up all the wiring, and tested it:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_parts_5.jpg
It works, so I must have gotten it right. Must be all the reading I've been doing in here lately actually rubbed off on me. :)

I pre-assembled the ribbed extension and the blade holder, and tested again:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_parts_7.jpg

Using the 3/4" blade adapter I have, I tried it out with my fiber optic blade:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_parts_8.jpg
Not too bad, I guess, but then I used the 3/4" blade that has Corbin's film in it:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_parts_9.jpg
Much better. I'm using the 10 degree optics in these pics.

I took the electronics out and went over to the drill press and drilled for the set screw. I then tapped it by hand for 10-32 threads.
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_parts_10.jpg

Next, I drilled the chrome tube and the ribbed extension for the attachment screws. I did four balance out the look of the saber.
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_1.jpg

For just eye-balling them, I think they didn't turn out too bad.
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_3.jpg
*EDIT: I dont really recommend doing it this way...use an MHS Sinktube adaptor instead....it's MUCH easier! -JGJ.

I then drilled the switch hole....I used a 3/8" drill bit in the drill press for this.
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_4.jpg

I then did the Final Assembly!
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_5.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_6.jpg

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_8.jpg
It's not entirely finished, but it is pretty close. I still need the blade thumbscrew, and some grips. Oh, and a blade. I also need to find a way to get the battery pack to stop rattling around in there. Any ideas?

I used the bubble wrap that Tim packed some of the parts in.

You could also use a lot of hot-glue and make a "Bracket" for it. I'd make one for each side, front and back.

Thanks guys! I'll give the bubble wrap a try first, Firebird, if that doesn't work out, I'll try the hot glue approach.

A little bubble wrap worked like a charm! No more rattle! In case anyone was wondering, the pommel-end of this just has the chrome cap on it, you can't see it in any of the pics I have so far.

When I did my friends hilt I took the bubble wrap from the leds and used that. not only thing I used that around the resistor and such Just incase.

More pics as more parts arrive! I was thinking about getting the adhesive grips in the store to put on it. If i could come up with a way to mount a speaker, I might even add sound to this one.

Okay, I went to the hardware store on Monday and picked up a couple brass screws and a knurled nut:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_10.jpg
I had to cut the screw down to the correct length, and drill & tap the hole in the nut to the correct size, but it works.

I also cleaned and polished the hilt using my Eagle-One Never-Dull polish wadding which removed a lot of the scratches it aquired during construction and snapped a couple more pics:

I pulled the EL wire out of my EL blade and popped it into the hilt:

It doesn't look too bad....

I'd like to replace the blade with another 3/4" thin-walled blade with Corbin's film, but I don't have any more blade tips for those.

I wander if theres a way to crimp a sinktube without compleatly deforming it and making it useless.

I believe you can do that with a pipe cutter. I think I saw it on a hardware Mara hilt.

I don't own one big enough for sinktubes but it might be worth a try. I'm guessing you'd reverse the blade or just take it only for a single turn or so.

I was actually thinking about trying that, Ryma! I think x-wing is right, just one turn around the tube should do it. The only thing is, the tubing cutter that big is 20 bucks. I'd have to build a few more tube-sabers to make it worth it....I'm not sure what else I'd use it for. Maybe actually working on plumbing.... :)

Okay, I finally ordered some more parts for this thing, and got them installed. I ordered a 1" blade with a double wrap of Corbin's film, and a set of grips.
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_14.jpg
I only had room to evenly space four of the grips because of the covertec whell, but I think the grips finish it off well.

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_18.jpg
The 1" blade was too top heavy for the lightweight hilt, so I removed the film and re-installed it into one of my 3/4" thin-walled blades.

Personally, I like how the blade adapter lights up, it's a really cool effect even without the blade installed. I also forgot that I was going to add some score lines with a pipe cutter on either end of the grips. I was too excited to see it with the grips on, I guess!

Looking good.
I know that blade weight is a definite consideration for people. I prefer a thick walled blade just because I duel with my saber harder than a lot of people do. So the added thickness makes a difference as far as durability goes.
Now for carrying a saber around or doing a non dueling demo with, the lightweight thin walled blades can't be beat. A 3/4" thin walled blade is almost weightless compared to the thick walled 1" versions.

You sacrifice a bit of brightness with the 3/4" blade, but you gain mobility.

Well, I just finished adding the soundboard to this one:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_14.jpg
After installing the speaker to the battery pack like I usually do, I noticed it wasn't very loud. I realized the diameter of the sink pipe was too big for the speaker to resonate properly in, so I went looking around the house for an empty film canister to use and couldn't find one. Darn digital cameras!!! I made a stop at the hardware store on the way to work and picked up a few 3/4" PVC couplers:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_sound_1.jpg
I cut one in half because the full length coupler made it sound a bit strange....it's hard to desribe, but the hum had a bit of a "popping" sound to it...I guess that's the best way for me to decribe it, anyway. The cool thing about these is that there is a bit of a counter sunk lip inside the opening.:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_sound_2.jpg
The speakers from the store fit right in, nice and snug, almost like they were made to fit!
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_sound_3.jpg
I hot glued it in place.

Jay-gon Jinn
07-27-2007, 12:06 PM
I removed the grips and added some scoring lines to give it a bit more detail:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_sound_5.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_sound_6.jpg
I added a line at the pommel end, too. I also had to drill a hole pattern on the chrome endcap:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_sound_7.jpg
As it sits now, I haven't re-applied the grips yet. I'm still undecided as to whether or not I want to put them back on:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/MHS_saber_hilt_sound_4.jpg

I really like the saber and the work you've done to it. The pics and descriptions of the things you've done are helpful to me because I am about to start my first saber project. TOPIC RESURRECTION UPDATE!!!!
I had some free time back in October of 2008 and decided I should upgrade the wiring in this thing to my current standards...it was kind of hack-ish, being it was my very first MHS based saber!

The first thing to do was improve the battery pack by routing the speaker wires through it like Tim does for his pre-assembled speaker/battery combos:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/d69da160.jpg

I snipped the wires to the soundboard:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/53b973b8.jpg

Hot glued the speaker to the battery pack:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/c28cff3c.jpg

And heat shrunk the wires to form a harness:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/dd426d82.jpg

I then solderd in a recharge port:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/ababce9f.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/498226e5.jpg
That's that! Now to drill a hole for it!

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/74084525.jpg
A drill press makes this too easy....but because of how I originally built this saber, the recahrge port is actuall located in the threads of the ribbed extension! like I said earlier, USE THE ADAPTOR!!! Don't bolt the ribbed extension directly to a sink tube like this...it makes upgrading the saber easier to just be able to unscrew the parts.

Anyway, a hole wasn't quite going to work with how this goes together, so I turned the hole into a slot using my rotary tool and the carbide cutting bit:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/8539b0cb.jpg

I cleaned up the cuts with a file....
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/1d1ade1d.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/c4d4d9b7.jpg

And attached it to the ribbed extension:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/2468a57d.jpg
And re-assembled the pieces:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/c2ea2089.jpg

The nice thing about this?
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/eed3f284.jpg
No nut on the outside of the saber! Now I can recharge the batteries in the saber if I want to!

So what does this saber look like now?

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/3063ed51.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/282be234.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/b9fb60c8.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/0bd708a3.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/ec310f74.jpg
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/Jay-gon_Jinn/My%20Chrome%20MHS%20sinktube%20saber/194bad2b.jpg

As you can see, it looks a bit different now! I added some o-rings to the ribbed extension and the rear of the saber, to give the illusion of a pommel. I also did a light sanding job on the rear grip are to give it some texture, and help reduce fingerprints, after I added the scoring lines using my tubing cutter.

It still sports an MR vader soundboard, too:

This is a pretty cool saber, your best looking one I think... I like your wiring pic, i saved it for ideas if that was ok. I'm close to getting my saber done. we just gotta figure out how to wire it all together. I think we got it though. I used the kind of tape they used to use on baseball bats for grips at the bottom then i'm getting 4 o-ring grips for the top. I'll post pics when everything is wired but the blade and film will have to wait. By the way, how to I post forums? I'm going to post one for my pvc saber! :D My pvc saber will be in green by the way.
