Out of curiosity, does anyone know a good place to get 1 1/2" diameter sink tubes with a polished brass finish? I'm sure they exist. My local Lowes sells a couple of kinds of brass tubes, but no 1 1/2" ones.

Spencer, I was looking for one too, but couldn't find it unless I went to an online store like the one linked form Tims links page. Anyway, I settled for a brushed look. I took a regular chrome pipe which is in fact brass with a thin layer of chrome and another of copper. I thickened a drill bit, slid the pipe on it and turned it on a sheet of sandpaper until all the chrome and copper was gone. It will be part of my 5Watt project. I'll post some pics when it's done.

hope it didnt remove too much of the thickness of the pipe itself, leaving it a bit easy to bend up?

GeluKhanGharr: If you take off the chrome, won't the brass tarnish after coming into contact with someones hands? I thought maybe a brass pipe sold without a chrome finish would have some sort of tarnish-preventer pre-applied.

YES! You need to apply a clear laquer finish to it. It will get brown and spotty without it. It will turn your hands green too after more than 30 minutes contact. I learned this from my musical experience where plating gets worn away on the instruments. It is possible to keep it unfinished but it will get a patina very fast and to stop that you'd have to constantly polish it with an abrasive.

I don't know, it has only been about a week since I've done it, and it still looks good.

I depends on the acidity of your hands but unlaquered it will get a patina. Within a month it will start to go spotty. Brass patina is not like copper. It gets brown and I think it looks like dirt.

On the same saber I am also using a brass nut. It doesn't look finished, it is just a dull golden color. I am hoping the pipe will turn the same way. Since thre is also copper and chrome and black on that hilt, it should look good, even when dull.

One thing that will help, I clear coated all the sanded metal on this saber and that was over 3 months ago, no fading or tarnishing or corosion.http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c237/G-FORCE13/lsabers004.jpg

Do a search for "bar railing" or "brass handrail tubing". You should find sites that carry pre-polished and pre-laquered brass tubing in a variety of sizes. I know must of these places carry 1.25 and 1.5 inch stuff.

One of my future sabers (non-functional display piece) is going to be made from this stuff. Should be sweet.
