Any reason something that is designed to wirelessly charge LiIon batteried phones, couldn't be adapted to wirelessly charge sabers? I'm imagining is the rechargeable toothbrush style, where a plastic indent in the pommel is the site of the induction coils. You'd need to make both the charger and the receiver (with something like this (https://www.adafruit.com/products/1407), stepped down to 3.7V).

Anybody know if you can take the above linked coils and resize them (wrap them in a smaller loop to fit inside a saber?)?

I'm guessing the main problem people would have with this setup would be the low speed of recharge. 500mA at 3mm isn't going to recharge a saber in an hour, but maybe over (a couple) night(s)?

Has it been done? Could it be done?

I would think this would be your biggest challenge

Any non-ferrous/non-conductive material (eg air, wood, leather, plastic, paper, glass) can be used between the two coils. The material doesn't affect the distance or efficiency. The coils do need to be fairly co-axial, try to get them to be parallel and have the circles line up for best power-transfer.

Yeah, it would have to be a plastic (3D printed, perhaps) pommel insert.

The idea of inductive charging for lightsabers is brought up from time to time. Occasionally people state that they're going to try it, but I've never heard their results.

i'm making a lightsaber with katana style wrap and capacitive touch switches. since i dont want the saber to turn on every time i touch it i have to wrap it in non-conductive material. im toying with the idea of putting an inductive charge capability in my saber by placing the coil under the non-conductive material. this should mean i don't have to try to fit it in the pommel. biggest questions are where do i wire it into the circuits and will it work with any base?

-------EDIT-------
here is a link describing my lightsaber design WITHOUT the inductive charging

That is a good direction for inventive saber smiths to go in. I like the idea. It works for Apple watch. It should be workable for a saber. Even if the technology (ready-to-install) isn't available now, it probably will be in the near future. Cool idea!

Wonder if the coils from a sonic care rechargeable would fit the bill when coupled with the 5v charging system?

The trick is getting the charging and receving coils close enough when installed in a cylindrical form factor such as a hilt. That is why the Phillips Sonicare does it the way it does. That is all I can say so the hint is there.

they usually need to be withing 8mm to work from what i read. the wraps should be thin enough. i think

i am going to be doing a mock up of the wrap so that when i prototypeit i can place the mock up between the coils

Also parallel or close to it for best results.

if this works then ill be making a custom cradle for it.

Hi there, Darth. Were you able to make a successful wireless charging hilt?

If you put the coil in a plastic/printed pommel insert and create a base to be able to stand the saber in you should hvmave no problem getting them close enough and the base would keep the aligned for optimal connection. I dont see whybthis wouldn't work.

Sounds like my electric toothbrush.
