just an FYI, walmart sells plastic car seatbelt adjusters in the auto section that make great saber belt clips, they come in a 2 pack for about $2.89.

I have a question about those cell phone belt clip systems in which you've got a little knob that goes on the phone and a belt clip the knob slides into. How much weight can the clip support?

by the time the clip breaks from the weight of a heavy lightsaber, your pants would have been long since down around your ankles.
i tired a picture hanging clip i saw recommended and it bent right away. try the seat belt adjusters, they don't look like the movies but they do look good.

Spencer, I've tried the cell phone clips, the cheap kind thingies. The knob is alright, but the clip that goes on the belt breaks realy easy - I broke 4 in one day. I'd go with Tim's covertec. I know is much pricier than the dollar store crap, but it's worth it.
It's not the weight that breaks them, it's the sideways twisting of the knob in the holder that does it. I don't know how to better explain it. Imagine the pressure points on the clip if you hit the belt hanging hilt with your swinging arm.

GeluKhanGharr,

I believe the word you are looking for is "Torsion"
noun: The stress or deformation caused when one end of an object is twisted in one direction and the other end is held motionless or twisted in the opposite direction.

The Covertec was designed for bigger devices like PDAs and Pocket PCs and can handle a lot of torsion.

Tim,
any chance you would start selling the Krussell steel belt clips? those look nice and look a lot sturdier.

Vincent,
I suppose torsion would be the closest thing to call it, but it is not true torsion if you think about it. It is more of a lever action. Anyway, with the help of this discussion, I believe they get the ideea.

<font face="Verdana">Since I started making sabers I've used a unique combo. I was/am to cheap to buy an actual Covertec setup.
I use a furniture stud on the lightsaber $.80, and a microphone clip mounted on a leather loop $3.00 (leather from an old belt).

This holds alot of weight and can be locked if you make a pin out of a 14 guage nail.
It's not film accurate but it is very functional.</font id="Verdana">

aw, that takes me back to my old CB radio days. that sure looks like a mike clip for a CB radio mike. and i guess if you could get the mike itself you could even use the clip off the back of the mike to put on the saber. neat idea. i hadnt thought of that before, cudos to you, madcow.

That looks like a sweet idea! Mind if I use it as well? I was working on something to go with the pegs of a guitar.. y'know the strap knobs? But those will probably end up being deco knobs. :)

i have a good alternative as well. im not sure if any of you are musicians, but i used a guitar strap-lock. they arent as cheap as other alternatives, but they can definatly handle a great deal of stress, lock, and look pretty nice to boot.

So I found out that Radio Shack is no longer in Canada!!! But if you go to Radio Shack's website and plug in this info:

Model: 21-923
Catalog #: 21-923

I used the Catalog # there you will find the clip you pictured. I joined a Yahoo Group for HAM Radio to see what I can find... :)

these were cool but you dont see the pretty side (it gets mounted backward for our purposes) :
http://www.bill-lewington.com/qparts/straplocks.htm

these are what i used:
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/stringitup/fender990690st.html

they all work the same, the part you mount to saber has a hole in the center (also where its mount screw goes through) and the lock part is spring loaded with a peg that sticks into that hole. you have to pull on the round ball thingy of the mount to release the saber. you can find the fender ones in gold and black as well.

Thanks for the links... I'm having trouble seeing how they would work for the saber though. Do you have a pick of yours to show how it is used?

I reckon it must be a guitar player thing, I used a set of old Schaller strap locks on one of my PVC sabers and it worked pretty good.

the small button part that looks similar to the covertec button goes on the saber, the lock is designed so that you feed the post through your belt lock it down with a washer and nut and your good to go. to release the saber you just pull on the post from behind the belt. It may seem kind a little cumbersome at first but with practice you can get it pretty quick with one hand.

From the pic, it looks like the post would dig into the hip.. doesn't it?

I have never had a problem but then again I have never had a problem with pulling my starfighter out of hyperspace to grab a couple of Burritos either [;)] That post isn't very long, maybe an inch. I wouldn't want to slip and fall on it but I wouldn't want to do that with most other clips either.

Sounds good. I'll look into the options I have at the West Edmonton Mall and see what I can find.

I know that the fancy side will not be seen, but it could be a way of saying, "My clip" [:D]

yes, the nub on the back isnt all that big, so its never been a big deal for me. as he said i wouldnt want to fall on it. it would be like sitting on your keys, but i cant argue with its strength.
