seeing as this will be my first build, are there any tips concerning battery pack placement and switch boxes that I should know? I have a background in electronics work, so the wiring should be easy.

are you using a chassis? Also, what soundboard are you using? (If you're using the NB and a 3.7V battery, put the chassis on the ribbed extension... you don't want the NB too close to the speaker.
