View Full Version : Lightest Battery usable?

So, I'm building a lightsaber that I am going to try and make as light as possible.

Main Body: 1 1/8" Alu tube (1/16" Walls, so 1" ID)

Blade: 7/8" Thin Wall Clear Blade w round tip. (Why is the diffuser OOS) (using a piece of 1" w 1/16" Wall to choke down to it)

ARKM pointed out to me the 1" Heat Sinks to use for the LED
(8.7 Lens, Green Luxeon Rebel, Lens Holder)

SPST Latching Guarded Switch on the bottom.

So, onto the last important question:

What would be the lightest battery to use in it? (Rechargable or Non, I don't mind. As long as it will run for 10 minutes on a charge I'm ok with it.)

I was considering even watch cells, but they're not rated for the amperage draw of a Luxeon.

You are going to need to use regular sized batteries. Li-Ion's are your best bet.

as in: http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Li-Ion-18500-37V-1400mAh-PCB-Protected-Rechargeable-Battery-Module-P775.aspx ?

That would work, but I'd use this one if you can fit it in and afford it: http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Panasonic-Li-Ion-18650-37V-3400mAh-PCB-Protected-Rechargeable-Battery-P853.aspx

would you happen to know what that weighs?

Size I can make happen, I'm more concerned about weight. (I'm weird, I know.)

Using a single die Rebel green? You could realistically drop to a 14500 or 14650 li-ion. You'd get just under an hour runtime.

Shave a little more weight using one of the tiny momentary switches and a momentary-to-latching converter. You'll take a few grams off the weight of using that latching switch.

Ohhh... a single AA sized battery... that could easily work.

I've used an 18350 before but that was for the size, not the weight. It's shorter than a AA but probably weighs more. I would just use the 18650, though.
If you can hold a saber with a blade in it and tell the weight difference between one with an 18650 and an 18350, you must be some kind of all-knowing wizard or something.

For this level of concern over weight, I can only imagine that TKitch has an R2 unit that he wants to equip with a saber launcher. :)

No R2 unit.... yet... But I do like that idea! :D

I'm actually building a levitation stick, which are usually 10-11 ounces or less. (Not to mention, evenly weighted, but that won't happen here.)

So I'm trying to shave as much weight off as possible to keep the overall weight under that level.

Man, Stunt Lightsaber Schematics are so painfully easy. It's crazy ;-)

Getting the actual parts is more complicated than the wiring is! :D

Yep. For a stunt saber, you're not building anything more complicated than a flashlight.

Making it look good while you're doing it, that's the fun part!

I just got the last of the electronics I needed in the mail! WOOHOO!!!

Check the delivery status of the aluminum tube from UPS...

Jerks accidentally sent it to the wrong end of the country, meaning I'm not going to see the package for more than another week!
