ok, so for the last day i've been drawing up my idea double bladed lightsaber hilt on CAD. i've got the parts down right for it to work the way i want it, but i'm stuck on one part.

i want this one ot break down into to separate sabers, but i dont want that break to be threaded. its going to be my primary stunt saber, so i need ot to break into two in a hurry.

any ideas?

(below is the drawing of one side. in the picture, the connecting end has mushroom-headed prongs that would plug into holes on the end of the other saber, and twist and lock into place, but i have no idea how it would work, like if it needed a spring mechanism or anything)

you could always use magnates to join them like parks does

we had a discussion about this a while ago. there are some SUPER strong magnates out there that will hold that thing strong, you will have to try to uncouple them.

You can't get rare earth magnets at your usual craft store, as far as I know. Those are the super strong ones. Do a search to find where to get them.

It's funny that you corrected Maul's spelling of "magnets" when you typed "imput" in your thread title, instead of input. :P

search ebay for rare earth magnets, i bought 30 a few years ago for 10 bucks.

aka "neodymium"

and ebay really is the best place to get them right now. Most electronics suppliers also carry them but you'll get more for your money on ebay.

checked them out on google and ebay. they dont seem what i'm looking for. while the locking power is good, it doesnt seem to good of a idea ot have that strong a magnet on flailing objects.

any other ideas?

He said he didn't want to have to screw it apart.

I think a spring mechanism is the best. Have it work like an umbrella. Have opposing springs that push a pin out. This pin lines up with the female pommel and some holes.

i think i kind of get that, but i', not sure. have a drawing?

I guess I could do something real fast... think umbrella.

ask tim about doing a one off sink tube double hilt connector designed to mimick the bamboo katanas release button...

if the double connector was cored out for a button assembly like this locking pin setup you could put a mhs sink tube adapter into the hilt and have tim machine a pommel that fits inside the 1.5 sinktube. if the pommel was pushed far enough into the hilt for the double adapter to slide in and there was a cutout in the pommel for the lock pin to seat then this would work, would be strong and disconnect quickly... throw that idea around and maybe we can come up with a working option

Here's what I was thinking:

Should be simple enough. It seems you already want to get the whole thing custom machined so it should be easy to implement. If Tim did do a better system this would be nice.

only problem there is he would have a larger section on one of his pommels, imo a symetrical hilt would look and function better

something like this should work quite well, be easy to do, give you a better ressonance chamber, and you could use convertec knobs for the release buttons...

xwing does it again! you gave me a very good idea, one that i think i can have done and have it work too!

aren't they called neodym-magnets or something?
