I haven't been very active in the hobby or on the forums the last few years, but occasionally I still get the itch to build something new.
First one up is a new one for my son since he sold his last one. We decided on some heavy weathering for this one. I've been practicing a few new to me techniques on spare parts, so tomorrow will be game time for this one. Obviously it has some Qui Gon influence to it, not sure that I'm really liking the pommel so I may end up ordering a different one. I've got a R/G/B Tri-rebel for it to go along with a NBv2, he wants a red main led with a blue FOC. I've got everything minus some pvc for a chassis, so this one should come together quick now that the shroud is done.

This one is actually my third go at this hilt, and after doing both of these shrouds it WILL be my last. I managed to snap some pics while I was roughing out the shroud. I started with sitharchive.com blueprint of Qui Gon's hilt and had Tim whip up some parts to my spec's. Then the shroud was "made to fit" the MHS parts. I still have a ton of parts to get for this one, so it'll be a little bit longer before its finished.

Usually start with a rough draft of the shroud,
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x170/ErDanGill/Sabers/Qui%20Gon%20Jinn%20MHS/2251DF68-C19A-459A-A85C-FDDF9C899A50_zpsoepeoshp.jpg (http://s182.photobucket.com/user/ErDanGill/media/Sabers/Qui%20Gon%20Jinn%20MHS/2251DF68-C19A-459A-A85C-FDDF9C899A50_zpsoepeoshp.jpg.html)

And Then a second to "fine tune" it,
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x170/ErDanGill/Sabers/Qui%20Gon%20Jinn%20MHS/CB466EC4-AF80-4683-8A60-774D36839ECD_zps7umo01ug.jpg (http://s182.photobucket.com/user/ErDanGill/media/Sabers/Qui%20Gon%20Jinn%20MHS/CB466EC4-AF80-4683-8A60-774D36839ECD_zps7umo01ug.jpg.html)

And the finished pattern,

Glued to the shroud material,

And done,

First round of weathering is done. I used a method similar to what Madcow showed in his weathering video, and gave it an light wash with acrylics.

More coming soon!

This is a saber offering a different flavor at every step of its making. In ist original from, without the black and the weathering, it looked a formidable and at the same time quite elegant weapon, I liked it very much (I have to confess I find chrome sink tube above pure aluminium simply nice)! Well done!

Hey thanks a bunch Obi! I've never weathered a hilt to this level before, it's a new learning experience for me. I still have to add a few more layers to it, but I wanted to wait until the first few were dry. Not sure if I'll get them on tonight but I'd really like to try.

That looks awesome. I really like the way it looks weathered and I also really liked it before the weathering.

Work has just been brutal the past several months and time has been very limited, so I finally took some time to work on this today. I used rogue9607's method of etching with the root kill & salt water. I didn't have access to anything other than packing tape, so I painstakingly masked everything off and spent most of the morning drawing the pattern by hand onto the shroud. And the rest of the morning cutting it out with razor blades, etching it, and then peeling the tape back off and cleaning it.

I have to say that his was by far the most tedious work I've ever done, but the results were worth the effort. When my son and I were sketching out the design I had the idea of hiding our names in the so called "scroll work". Given that I am a fan of both genres, I also threw a small tribute to Leonard Nimoy in there as well.

I will definitely be doing this again, but I will be looking into the way that rogue9607 does his versus the time consuming and tedious way that I did it today.

Loving the etching on that shroud. The plain extension definitely deserves the same treatment.
