I have a person asking me to make him a bladed curved saber, so I was wondering if anyone who has done this can post about it. Thanks.

Curved or Angled?

Pink joints would work well for angled. Curved is a whole 'nother ballpark though.

Are we talkin ala Dooku?

I know we have ran over this here and there but never in one spot. This could be interesting.

I did one with the traditional sink pipe fittings but I cut out all the threaded pieces. It was ok but not my favorite.

Curved, angled, just so its bent :D
I was thinking along the lines of the angles in yoiaholics saber on this page: http://thecustomsa.web133.discountasp.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=703&start=30

yeah, this guy, for some reason, wants it as his primary saber, a la dooku, maybie I'll put on a single MHS claw....

Yep, MHS and PVC.

Works well to do the job. We have even bounced around some ideas on bending pipe.

wow that would be hard without a pipe bender or a lathe, because with a lathe you can just machine the parts out and have seperate pieces, but either way it would look cool.

james3

Pipe bender is readily avaliable at HD and such.

might one use the angled approach and put a corrugated tube (sink hose) over the angle piece to achieve a smoother bend in look and feel?

I bought mine from RLSA. Rob does a great job with the sabers and his customer service is excellent. If you can't do it yourself he's a great guy to talk to. I'm sure if you went and bought your own curved sections (the ones on my saber are just copper pipes from HD) then rob or tim could machine the other parts for you.

One other option in randomsabers. They just started a pipe bending endevor. Ryan is currently offering curved practice sabers (stunt sabers with no room for electronics but can hold a blade). These are probably the closest thing you will ever get to a true curved saber and they look really cool.

Well, PVC is easy... here's Ultra's Dark Initiate V2:

I have also seen vacuum cleaner extension tubes used. They are curved and about the right diameter. they can be ordered as replacement parts I believe....

that black PVC saber looks great.

the only way i've been able to think of doing it with tims parts involves a blowtorch and something with quite a large circumference to bend it around.

the crude and inefficient methods are always the best. :D :D

at some point i'll get a 1 1/2" sink tube and try it. its just pricy (and slow) having things sent to england.

987654321a
11-18-2006, 11:22 AM
why not just get a curved section of a sink tube

fadeout
11-18-2006, 11:32 AM
In all honesty i didn't know what a sink tube was until i came here. oh the trouble i had working out what a heatsink was!

how thick are tims peices?
i'm doing a big order next year (when i have xmas money :D and postage pricing comes down again) and i'm considering altering my design if it possible to bend one of the double grooved hilt peices. the only thing i worry about is warping the threading of the connectors. i don't mind burnishing on the top as this is i will call 'character'!

xwingband
11-18-2006, 11:48 AM
Bending a double connector after the fact would be practically impossible. It's only like 2 inches long. You'd rip the thing apart.

Is it even possible to bend a sink tube? The brass is pretty thin.

I can imagine what might happen, the inside of the bend creasing or splitting; or the outside of the bend splitting. Has anyone tried bending a sink tube?

987654321a
11-20-2006, 06:39 PM
i havent done it but with a soft metal like brass it would tear.

JadedMonk

I had limited success making relief cuts a little more than half way through the tube. The curve was then wrapped in leather. This is a very delicate solution though. I spread JB weld across the cuts inside the tube and between the cuts. I let it cure for a couple of days, even so a few minutes of rough handling by it's owner broke most of the JB weld. I haven't worked on a hardware saber since, but I think if I'd reinforced it somehow it might work. Perhaps fiberglassing the inside of the curve, instead of JB weld.

Cheers,

JM

I am working on a curved saber now. I used a J - shaped peice on sink tube. A sink trap actually. I cut the curve to give me the angle I want. I will post pics later this week. I'm pretty happy so far.

Here's a thought - do the relief cuts like JadedMonk, but instead of using a cold wleding putty, do real welds on it. The brass is so thin, I'm pretty sure that even a tiny arc welder will do the trick...

james3
11-22-2006, 11:38 AM
Interesting, just one problem. I would bet that most do not have the tools or the knowledge to do that.

Dregan

Using an arc welder is stupid simple - the trick is using it well. I'm not there yet.

BUT.

Look up automotive muffler shops in your area. Cut and bend it yourself, then take it there to have them weld it. Most guys will only charge a few bucks for something that small. Take it home and sand it yourself.

After I finish my current project load, I'll start on one of these.

james3
11-22-2006, 12:03 PM
That is where you may have an advantage in Ohio.

You go ask someone in a shop to do anything for you and look to pay AT LEAST hourly rate which could be 75 bucks easy.

So here it is unfinished.

I used the longer J-shaped peice that came with this drain trap. I cut the bottom off the "J" to give me the angle I wanted. I machined aluminum parts to fit the pipe - you could use plastic pipe parts.
http://rpetkau.photosite.com/~photos/tn/6399419_348.ts1164316038769.jpg
Then 2 bolts drilled and tapped to hold my aluminum peice solidly inside the Sink J-pipe.
http://rpetkau.photosite.com/~photos/tn/6399421_348.ts1164316040094.jpg

Next I'll add grips and electronics.

Using an arc welder is stupid simple - the trick is using it well.

using a mig welder or (wire feed), or finding someone that could tig weld would look better. You wouldn't have the splatter as you would with a stick welder. It's also easier to control the heat without melting through.

I'm gonna have to try making a curved hilt someday--maybe black with an amber LED blade.
What is a good way to bend PVC? Would boiling a piece in water make it flexible enough to do the trick?

I wonder if that black Siloflex pipe would work better than PVC.

vortextwist
11-26-2006, 07:41 PM
I think they make some pvc pieces just like the metal sink drains, not sure what the od or id is or even thickness, may have to take a trip to the hardware store.

Plenty of good suggestions here!
This is what I'm kinda thinking:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-3/1165233/curved.JPG

Sink Tube
MHS Claw
MHS emitter and pommel
and the grey is PVC 45 degree elbows.

Madcow, that curve is awesome! If I could do the same sort of thing with a MHS adapter, that would look much better than the above.

should be do-able.

MHS adapter + 1.5" elbow section + MHS adapter.........

You only want a curved saber if your planning on dualing your friends in combat Form:2 or Makashi which was used exclusively by several sith aprentices the reason why you will rarely if not ever see a jedi using a curved saber the Form:2 is almost exclusively designed for knight to knight combat a jedi will rarely ever have such a fight and a sith almost exclusively fight jedi so they use Form:2 (fast percise blows) while the jedi use form3 (all defense) form4 (no longer used after Qui Gon Jen's death) form5(all strength) form6 (a little bit of all the forms but master of none) form7(moves that are defensive and offensive at the same time the most demanding of skill of all the forms) this link will explain the differences http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makashi and here is a link that will show the sith who used curved sabers note all were killed form 2 is hopeless against an extreemly agressive attack such as form5 which vader used to disarm and kill dooku however if you made the the saber correctly so the the bend was in the right place on the saber and it didn't have as extreem of an angle like dooku's like 20 to 30 degree bend instead of 45 it could be capable of forms 2 and 3 which might be a pretty formadable light saber being capable of form 2 would definitely be helpful for taking on dual bladed knights or mutiple singles with a single blade.

Initially, I was reading up on the curved hilts to see what else has been experimented with, then you guys lost me with all the food. In fairness, I'll agree on the robin, but not on the clown burgers, science aside md still taste like poo. As for soy sauce, its awsome on gungan stir fry.

More seriously is the earlier mention of vacuum hose extentions. I have two of these type under construction. The curve in these are less drastic than that of pvc or j-tube constructions, which makes for a comfortable grip. The metal is also a stroger alloy. I found mine in resale shops & garage sales for next to nothing, but I have seen them on ebay under "electrolux".

It also appears that the skinnier section is the same diameter as a 1.25" tube (main shaft section) while the hose end (after removing the hose) is slightly larger than the wider end of a 1.25" sink tube. What you end up wit is a stronger 1.25" sinktube with a prefabricated curve, and fatter emitter shaft area.

Hope this is of help to anyone, and I'll try getting some pics of mine posted.

It's all about quality, not quantity. Derailing every Topic is bad.

In fact, the constant, pointless and needless derailment of too many Topics that should NOT has led me to put the Derailment Unit in a state of Suspended Animation so as to distance the Unit from such reckless activities.
