View Full Version : Best Maglite to go with Maglite Blade Holder?

I just ordered a Maglite blade holder and a 32" blade. Can't wait for it to come in the mail.

I just now need to get a Maglite. I'm wondering should I get a conventional bulb Maglite, or an LED Maglite?

My inclination is to get an LED Maglite for the brightness & battery life. Just wondering how well the factory LED Maglites work with the blade holders?

Would I be better off getting a regular bulb Maglite and then upgrading to an LED replacement later?

Does anyone have a source for colored replacement LEDs for Maglites? I keep reading about them, but they seem to be right up there with unicorns & sasquatch as far as hard to find goes.

I would recommend the LED Maglite. They're far brighter than the old versions.

I've not done a Maglite saber before, so I'm not sure what you'll need for the conversion. It shouldn't be too difficult.

It's not a conversion, it's a part. Right off the main site's menu - D-cell Maglite bladeholder:

Anyone done one of these before? Someone must have...

I converted my regular (incandescent) bulb D-Cell Maglite. I changed the glass bulb to an LED bulb using one of those TerraLUX direct replacement led bulbs from Amazon. Then I put a TCSS 8.7 deg lens (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Collimator-Lens-87-deg-viewing-angle-P537.aspx) in the TCSS D-Cell Maglite blade holder (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/D-cell-Maglite-blade-holder-P514.aspx) then screwed it onto my Maglite and it worked great. The Maglite blade holder description says it's supposed to be used with a lens holder as well, but I only used the lens with the TerraLux bulb and it held well. Must have the lens though, without it the light is scattered/unfocussed.

I'm not sure how it would work with a Maglite that is already LED from the factory.

(Hope it's OK to mention Amazon since we're talking about Maglite parts and not competing saber parts. Will delete reference if someone objects to it)

See, that's why I ask these things.

Just ordered the lens & lens holder.

Do you think it would all work with the regular bulb until I can get my hands on a LED bulb?

Any word on colored LEDs?

Don't think they make colored LEDs for maglight. But I could be wrong, if anything you could rig up your own colored one with some patience and solder.

For both my son's and mine, I got a 2 C Cell regular maglites, and an led conversion for them. Here is the thread for how mine turned out: http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showthread.php?16364-First-Build-Maglite-Conversion-quot-Ursas-quot&p=228555#post228555

The stock bulb is fine. Not as bright as you might want with a blade. As for colors, I am just using discs cut from those plastic tabbed dividers. Works real well, and gives me a nice cyan color.

Thanks for the link, Ack. Your build looks a little more ambitious than mine. I was going for cheap. lol. Those are some good looking sabers, btw.

I stopped by Home Depot yesterday and picked up a silver, 3 D-cell LED Maglite. I looked at the LED bulb, decided that it would probably work and bought it.

Got the e-mail yesterday that all my parts are in the mail to my house. Can't wait for them to arrive.

LOVE the idea of making discs from divider tabs. I can totally life some from the office supply cabinet at work.

Will keep things updated.

I have picked up both Tim's C-cell and D-cell blade holders. I find the weight of the c-cell much better, but make sure you are going with a LED version as the bulbs are not very bright at all. I used them both for stunt sabers.

That's my d-cell in the middle. I haven't done anything fancy with my c-cell.

for different colours just pick up some of the coloured disks that tim has in his shop. I hot glued the colour I wanted to the blade end so it wouldn't slide down to the led and melt hehe.

Got an e-mail saying everything was shipped Wednesday.

Today the lens & lens holder arrived. Nothing else. :O

Hopefully tomorrow.

(Do the lens & holder go in pointy end up (toward the blade) or pointy end down (toward the hilt)?)

The lens itself goes pointy side down towards the light.

Got my blade & blade holder today. I made some color discs out of file folder tabs. Rocking some Sith Red right now (although it's a tad pink to be honest).

Pics to follow!

Try putting a double layer of discs in. That has worked for us.

Thanks, I'll do that.

I took out the red and put a blue disc in because I really wanted Jedi Warrior blue. I really did.

"Warrior blue, yeah."

Two swings later I took it out and put a green disc in.

"Green? But Consulars are pussies."

I know. But a green lightsaber just seems... right.
