Anyone ever try Aluminum buttonhead screws or sockethead caps? I would imagine that they aren't quite as strong as the stainless ones but are they strong enough?

I have tried all of those. I have a HD and have gone thru a couple of phases(knurled allen head, button head, hex head)and some where aluminum for attaching various pices on the bike. Aluminum is strong but easy to cross thread and over tighten. regular chrome steel allen head bolts were the cheapest and could be dressed with a cool chrome top; that hid the allen key part. If you try to get high strength aluminum you be paying like you bought stainless at least around here. We have a store called Bluebird fasteners a few miles from my shop so that kind of thing is easy for me to get. If you need somthing special let me know. most probably i can get it. Custom bike shops will have a good variety of cool stuff; if you've got one close by. I'd stick to a form of steel just to be sure

I didn't realize just how close you were to me. Do they have any kind of anodized ones?

In Richmond Departure BikeWorks has a vast assortment from Gardner-Wescott (manufacturer of Fasteners) in all forms. Anodized will be a little harder but Blue Bird fasteners in Hopewell can find anything and probably has it in stock. We'll have to hook up if your close. I'm like 10 minutes South of Ricmond
