As the title states, I'm looking for a few people to play Star Wars Galaxies with. It is a massively multiplayer online role playing game for the computer.

Before any of you flame saying the game sucks, I've just started playing again after a 7 month break and they have really made a ton a improvements. So bascially I'm asking that if you really hate or hated the game before please hold your tongue unless you try it now.

This game really has it all if you like star wars, player verus player combat, exotic locals, and lots of interesting quests to do. Roleplaying is optional but that would be fun to do as well. Its a game that is what you make of it. You get to have 2 characters per server and try everything out. There is a really great space section where you can build and fly ships in an x-wing vs. tie fighter style way. Even though the game isn't perfect (none are really) its as immersive as you can get into the Star Wars Universe.

There are 9 different professions to try out such as jedi, bounty hunters, commandos, smugglers, officers, spys, medics, entertainers and crafters. In game you own buildings such as houses, cantinas, and guild halls. Its really in depth and very immersive.

I'm currently a neutral jedi on the Scylla server (galaxy). While it is true that there is an excellent community already in game to interact with I think its more special when you have friends that play. That being said anyone on this board that would like to play I can help out with the basic items in game. It would be a great time.

Technical info:

There is a new starter pack coming out in November, and it has all the expansion packs included. There is another out right now that has all but the last one. Each expansion was a new playable planet in the game.

The game can be purchased anywhere (like walmart or target) for about 20 dollars. That includes 30 days of free game play. After your 30 day trial its 15 dollars a month. Not a whole lot when you work it out.

There is more info here with some nice screenshots:

I know what you mean, when this first came out in 2003 I had my computer from freshman year. It just wasn't able to run it smoothly. After I got a new computer for christmas, the first thing I did was buy the game.

If you can do it I totally recommend the best graphics card you can afford and at least 1GB of ram. It can be run at the min settings but the graphics in this game are outstanding, if you can crank it up.

Currently I have this system (A little dated now but it works fine)

Windows Xp
P IV 2.33 Ghz
1 GB of ram (all my motherboard will accept :( )
SB Audity Sound Card
256mb ATI Radeon 9550 AGP Graphics Card (you can get these at walmart for about 100 bucks now)
DSL Internet connection

Well Yoi thanks alot. You have convinced me that maybe I should try the game. I have never been a fan of games that you had to pay monthly to play, but I guess I need to rethink this one. My system will handle it fine, so now I just need to break down and get it. I may wait until the latest edition comes out in November, but I will let you know if I get it. Thanks for the invitation as well.

Np, there is even a free trial version available online if you want to try that until it comes out.

Well, that would be a problem then.

Hey Yoi from what I have been reading online SWG is dying off. Do you find that to be true? What I read said that there were not very many people playing it, and that it wasn't as fun since there were less people playing. What do you think? I would like to play, but if it is dying off I am not sure I want to start it up and get hooked.

Depends on who you talk to really. I play on scylla and while its always been one of the smaller servers I think its completely riduculous to think the game its 'dying'. There are always people around in the major cities.

While it is no doubt that the population is smaller now there is also a change in the way people are spread out though the game. Initially doctor buffs made it a necessity for people to constantly be hanging out together in the major cities to receive these. Now thats not the case.

Keep in mind also that there are 12 planets in the game and a space sector for each of them. Just because you log into theed and it seems no one is really around doesn't mean its empty by any means. Over the last month many of my guild has returned to the game because of the quality of the recent publishes.

So while you are free to believe anything you want about the game. I've played it, and I'm playing it again and I'm really having a great time. At least give the free trial a chance, if you like it then you can decide.

EDIT: Even though I play on scylla I'd be willing to play on the most populated servers such as Bria or Ahazi. The only difference is that I wouldn't have the resources to support everyone from the get go, we'd all be noobs.

Thanks for the info Yoi. I figured it was something like that, but I wanted to ask someone who actually played before plunking down the money. Do you know when in November that new edition of the game will come out? If it is in early Nov then I will just wait, but if it is in late Nov I will get the free trial. Once you get the free trial can you upgrade to the latest edition easily?

How would you like us to join your group? Is there one particular category of player that you need filled? I would want to be of use to your group if I played. Let us know so we can hook up and play.

I believe the target date is now november 14th. As for your other questions just send me a pm when you get into the game. I think that the free trial (online download version) is only a new player space station I won't have access to. Its like a starting area until you are comfortable enough with the game to come down to mos eisely.

As far as transfering it I believe that you get everything that is currently in the starter kit at walmart if you upgrade. Its probably a huge download but certainly something you can try.

Also when you pick a character style to play pick one that YOU want to try. You will have opportunities to change it in game (only a few times though) but you also will get two characters. You'd be much more helpful to everyone if you were happy playing whatever character you choose. our guild is large enough that we don't have any big holes.

Count, since your under 18 you'll need your parents permission for their credit card or you can buy a game card at a store for 30 bucks for 60 days.

Ask for it for Christmas or whatever...

i know that, like im not going to take my parents credit cards and start buyin away lol. my parents and i have discussed this topic many times before about star wars galaxies, and that 20 bucks a month is kinda expensive but i will do whatever the hell i can to play with you guys.

Yoiaholic

Its 14.99 a month if you buy it one month at a time. I usually get three months for 42? I can't remember the exact amount but its set up that the more you prepay the less you pay per month.

I'm pretty sure its non-refundable though so make sure you like it first.

I went and downloaded the trial version last night.

I was unable to play it due to the fact it had about 5 hours of updates to process  (and I'm on cable). Maybe I'll get a chance to try it tonight.

I don't know about paying each month to play though... I prefer the free games.

Yoiaholic
10-20-2006, 07:21 AM
The reason that you pay each month is because a dev team is still owrking on the game, fixing bugs, and adding content. Its not a game like Kotor that was finished (or like Kotor 2 not finished and rushed) to meet a deadline. That game will never change until Kotor 3.

SWG has updates, new things added and lots of fixes every month or so. Just a work of warning, the free trial if it is still like it was in april when I wanted to see what its like is not completely representative of the game.

You'll be in a space station with other new players, not down on the planets doing whatever you want. You can check out the graphics, mess with your gameplay settings and even try out the space part. But its not nearly as immersive as the actual game itself.

10-20-2006, 07:33 AM
One other thing, if you are going to try the free trial it still does make sense to go and get the pack at walmart to upgrade. You get an ingame gift anytime you buy a new game pack. These are usually pretty good and if you can find one of the old expansion packs that hasn't been opened its worth it.

If you buy the starter kit or wait until the new november release you'll have much less to download as most of the recent patches are on those disks.

UPDATE!

I just found out the free trial has been changed to a full version of the game including the space sectors. You get it free for 14 days and can create an account and begin to level your character. Once you purchase either the starter kit or the new one coming out in november then you can continue where you left off.

There might be some restrictions to prevent credit farming (when places in Asia use slave-style labor to have people made in game money to sell on ebay and other sites) and I may not be able to trade with you during this time. But once you have a full account we can rock and roll. I could even help you when you are still in the trial portion.

Should you decide to try this I am on the Scylla Galaxy and my in game name is -Tim- O'Neil. The dashes are important. See you in game :)

I got a free Xwing (in game)... When I switch back to cable from DSL, I think I'm going to sign back up, and switch my Jedi over to a Bounty Hunter. SOE gives you one free switchover from what I've read.

Thats true then you have to pay about 100k credits to switch again, everytime you change the price goes up, exponentially.

Last night I got bored trying to grind my new jedi and I was itching to get some new clone armor. (I'm still grinding because I ended up selling my elder jedi back in march to pay for my real estate classes, I kept all his valuable items and the sale of them has been the source of my in game wealth.)

So I decided to open up another account I have. I created a new Commando and a Smuggler. I'm going to leave these character at new player levels so that if you want to play we can grind xp together. I think its easier to stay focused if you work with a partner.

Just make sure you create your character in the scylla galaxy. It might be hard since you don't have an instrution booklet when you download the trial. I'm sure they have a PDF or readme with the commands and I strongly suggest you print it.

Here are a few new screenshots of a very cool dungeon and my new BH armor (until I can get mando armor but that will take a long time).

Not to bash SWG but I was one of the first beta tester for the game..

I bet I put over 1000 hours into the beta. I finally got bored with it and logged off. I guess I was tired of being armed to the teeth and still getting owned by Whomp-Rats and Sand People.

Seeing my buddy play a Wookie, trying to kite mobs like in Everquest was funny as heck too. Us old EQ players never learn...

I was VERY excited when it came out. Even MORE excited when I got into the beta. But somewhat dismayed by the gameplay. I was looking at my original beta disks just a couple days ago. Rather than chunk them, I figured I'd keep them as a collectible.. LOL

SWG was the next step in MMPOGs, I'm hoping the new Star Trek MMPOG next year will be the next step forward..

I totally understand what you mean, I have been playing since december 03. The CU was a rough adjustment and the NGE killed it for me. But that last 4 patches have been so good it allowed me to get back into it. After all its open ended star wars and I love that.
