I was wondering if people here had some good resources for costuming?
I think it might help lots of us to be able to find costumes and accessories.
before anyone does posts links I ask that Tim give his blessings on this...and if so remember the Light saber is Tim's livelihood and keep it to anything but light sabers. after all he gave us this space to use as a way for us to communicate our Ideas. so please respect it.

Well if you mean "resources" like buying then yeah that's a little out of the spirit of the board. Resources for making them... Sure. :D

Well I was thinking about this for a couple days now so with all due respect... I want to touch on something http://thecustomsa.web133.discountasp.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=285 these are not all homemade costumes... yeah I am trying to find a place that does custom tunics myself but I do plan on making my own accessories but I have no room where I live to get into large projects. making a saber, custom making a Jedi belt, ect, ect. these things I can do. I have no space to do much more though. so I need to find my tunics elsewhere.
now I am not trying to take the spirit of the forums away. but I also thought that helping others was part of the spirit of most any forum.

No matter how I do this I sound like an @$$ but it's cool I am used to it.

Have you even looked at the Jedi Gear thread that I created? I go in to detail about the lady that did my COMPLETE costume.

I for one didn't post anything before because while I understand what you are trying to do, I disagree with it. I have found that by reading fourm topics that have to do with a specific issue I may have to sift through and read ALOT of post and in several cases a whole bunch of snitz, I also get GREAT info and knowledge from others experience. It is way to easy to just make a list of places to get costumes made or bought or props etc. but it is sterile just like a yahoo search. You don't find out that this guy is good or that group is a rip. I will always prefer to get some good input that a forum creates.

Again, I DON"T sew. Neither does my wife so we are left to having to pay for someone else to do it. If you need better pics then what I have already provided, then let me know and I will pm or emil you.

Information on the darth vader thread that you point out.

1) some items are purchased due to the fact that it is impossible to recreate some parts.

2) those items purchased normally require some level of assembly and or repainting to make them correct.

3) even if you buy a peice from one place and some parts from another you are still making the choices as to what your costumes looks like in the end.

The bottom line is what Xwing was saying is that the idea of this forum is the do as much of the work yourself as possible. Anyone can buy a completed costume and be set and if that is the path you choose then great for you. But the fun of costuming is buying, making and assembling your costume to your vision what ever that may be.

ok I see not to put this thread to a head but it seems people can point out all the wonders of creating but not read the fact that I have NO ROOM!!! well if this is how one gets treated for asking for help under the circumstances I don't think I want to be part of it! later.

Maybe we are just missing your point. Maybe your missing our point. Who knows but aint everybody goingto all agree all the time. I posted before that I don't make my clothes. Check out the lady I use she is awesome but you cant come on to a props and costuming site ANYWHERE and just start asking for a crap load of links. Hell the whacky chick that runs the TFN costuming boards locks friggin topics and edits anyones posts that she dont like. I think Tim and xwing try to be really damn fair when it comes to what we do and post.

The problem is that Tim himself said just a few months ago, maybe you werent here yet, that he did NOT want topics made of just links to sites that didn't link to him.

In our discussions we post links and there is all kinds of stuff including friggin links that directly seel the same stuff as Tim and he tennds to be cool and let it go but asking to make a topic header with a bunch of links will probally be overstepping the line.

Again, check out the Jedi Gear thread.

Oh for crying out loud, If you want to buy a costume then go buy one, no one is trying to talk you out of it. Most of us do not have the resources to purchase completed costumes. I understand your lack of space problem, in fact my work area is the laundry room. But if there was a complete costume source that we knew of we would have shared it with you as it is most purchase things from many venders. It would help if you would have provided a idea as to what you are trying to do. Have you tried Ebay?

What are you looking for? A completed costume? Someone to custom make one? Or a list of places that you can get various parts?

My suggestion is to PM some of the people here that have made costumes and get their advice, and read the costuming topics on this forum, as there is a LOT of information to be had on them.

And I hope you don't leave on the account of a little heat... That would be a shame. There are some things you can't do on a store forum that you can do on others, sometimes it takes trial and error to find the proper etiquette. You did good by asking for Tim’s blessing on this. While we can’t speak for Tim we’re just letting you know what has happened in the past.

Alrighty...

I thought I had stated it clearly before... I guess not. If you want a topic for costuming links AS IN BUILDING THEM, then that is cool. That's totally in the spirit of this forum.

Asking for links for where you can buy completed stuff isn't kosher for two reasons:
1) This is Tim's business and it may have gone past most but he did say that he was looking into getting some jedi garb type stuff going for the shop if the samples he recieved were up to his standards. Not sure if that plan flew, but it was out there.
2) Anyone making them other than Rubies and Altmanns are unlicensed and throwing around links could potentially get them under the microscope of LFL. The microscope could fall on Tim too as "harboring" people dealing in unlicensed goods. Not throwing around links is standard fare even on boards that have no business aspect to them.

If this doesn't fit what you are looking for just PM me and I'll lock it.

not all parts of them are, but IF YOU READ THE THREAD, you would see we started off with premades, and altered them, or completely swapped out or scratch made ourselves parts of our vaders,

so they may have started off as not homemade, or put together vaders, but NOW THEY ARE!!! after we done all the work we done to them to makem better.

well it seems that while I was working a 10 hour shift it was mistaken for "buggin out" well I think that's what I'm going to do. rude insults and constant harassment seems to be the way people here communicate. not only did I state my case when xwing replied to my post, but I thought it was in a relatively decent manner. but then others had to chime in and make matters worse. well, i didnt think X-wing or anyone else answered your question with any ill feeling or snideness at all. if you take it that way, then fine, as it was explained already as plainly as possible.

but if you cant seem to understand, then maybe its best if you leave, as you sure seem to want god and everyone here, to bend to whatever you say.

well, my friend, welcome to the world, and life!!

you dont always get what you want, and when you want it, all handed to you on a silver platter. it sounds like your nothing more than a snobby lil rich kid who is used to gettin and doin whatever you want.

MAN oh MAN oh MAN

Look, I sit in the corner and mind my own business in this and most other forums I visit. I watch others flame and bicker. This board is one of my favorite boards to visit because there is none of that here, sure there are some members that get ribbed relentlessly but it is all in fun. Eclipse I think what has happened here is just a misunderstanding. You asked a question, xwing answered and it got away from everyone from that point on. Yes there are costuming threads on the board (thanks tim) yes we talk about all aspects of creating them or yes buying them. When it comes to sources for buying items your best bet is either that big auction site or just pm a member with something similar to what youare looking for. I assure you that the people on this board would be more than willing to assist you in finding what you are in need of, they are a great group of people. The various costuming threads have general information about the costumes involved and the people that post in the threads should have most of the knowledge that you seek. I know I have answered many questions from PMs about clone or storm costumes upto and including where to get things. It is in all of our best interests to keep a buy it from this person type thing off the board and in PMs, 1 it is a business website 2 one persons opinion varies greatly to anothers 3 LFL lets us play in their sandbox but has asked that we respect that generosity. Anyway I guess what I am trying to say is stick around eclipse these guys and gals are good people and 9 times out of 10 they will be able to answer your questions and help you out.

JediMcD
10-03-2006, 01:25 PM
Very well put Tazrob. You are correct about this being a great board to post and read at. Eclipse I agree with him about getting info through PMs. That keeps arguments form starting about who to buy from and who not to. Oh and yes I have been guilty of going down that path in other threads, and I apologize if I was a little to liberal with my opinions. You really should stick around. You won't find a nicer and more helpful group of people than here. If you like a certain costume then ask that person about it. I am working on an Anakin costume and a Jango costume. I know there are others who do vader, boba, stormtroopers, xwing pilots, etc. If there isn't a thread about a particular costume you would like to see then start a thread and ask people to post pictures of their costumes. That then gives you a lead to PM that person and inquire about the costume. I am not trying to come across in the wrong manner. I just wanted to maybe help the situation.

only proof here, is you ask for advise, advice was given, and you jumped down everyones throat with the I DONT HAVE ROOM, thing, we heard that, and we understood that.

opinions were given, but you chose to be blinded, and think everyone here was tryin to cut your throat or something.

if you ask for advise it will be given, but if its not to your liking, then dont complain or say were being rude, and insulting you.

now first off I was ready to hash this a while ago, but let me assure you I am not rich, I am not snobby, I wish I was still a kid, and I work my tail off for everything I have. so without making it any more of a stink lets just drop it.... its pointless because all that would happen is we would play that whole Internet Rambo poop and drive everyone up a wall.
secondly I appreciate the responses in order to help clear this up. I thank you JediMcD, tazrob, and James3 we did have a communication error sorry for that. but by the time I got home from work this thread was so far gone I didn't know what to think.
as for the reason for this thread, it seems that it was pointless in the first place..... I was not aware of Tim's rule and that's ok, but what I was looking for is bits and pieces to put together to help me put a decent costume together. then do my own alterations and accessories to add to it.. I was even thinking of trying to get a friend with a bit of space to let me make a vacuum table out at his house to make my partial armor for the costume...

I for one actually hope that you are successful in getting your tunics, robes, and assorted gear. I know how much fun I have had with it.

Also, if you didn't realize it before we tend to attempt to avoid major fights by using obsurd humor to just get everyone to shake their heads give a little laugh as they call us morons and move on. :P

Anyway, PLEASE feel free to jump in to our assorted topics on various costumes and like xwing said maybe give Tim an e-mail to see where he is on stocking them as it was talked about a bit.

yeah I have seen some of the Sabers built here and WOW I hope I do as well when I get mine done.. I have that whole artistic thing where I never feel its good enough type thing. I will enjoy the whole experience I will have though while creating.. and yes I love to create its good to start with almost nothing and build it to something others can appreciate. I got some long term plans on my future sabers too. one day I hope to be able to forge all the outer hilt from completely raw materials.... machining my own hilt and building the boards that go into it. that's going to be a long way down the road.

once I get into a larger place that I can set up all the tools for the job

I found the best for hobbies when in small spaces are plastic totes(like Rubbermaid or Sterilite) they stack well and hold lots of stuff. I live in a small 3 room apartment with my wife and the dog (whom takes up 1/3 of the livingroom) and all of our craft/ hobbie stuff stays in totes. you can also keep track of all projects easily.

You think we're bad???

That's where I got my training! And they're MUCH worse!

They're a bunch of 4wheeling rednecks from all walks of life. From motor homes to Wall Street. They're all there. And they don't take any crap! They will flame you until your eyes bleed and not only using the PC, they know how to get your # and they can, have, and will use it.

On the bright side, they're a hoot!

At any given time there are 600ppl on at once. The site only sells promotional clothing and such and you can subscribe to the forums to get special privileges, and the owner was able to quit his job and live off the forums. In fact he had to to keep the place up and running.
