I can't say it surprises me in the slightest. The man was an absolute lunatic.

If one good thing comes out of this, it will be that people will realise just how dangerous the animals that Steve dealt with are, and in no circumstances, will try any of the crazy things that he became so well known for.

I never wished for his death but I have been expecting it for some time now.

This was discussed on another board when that happened and the general consensus was "I'd rather be in Steve's arms feeding a crock than Michael Jackson's arms swung over a balcony!"

This really does suck... I liked the guy.

from the Guardian UK:

In a bitter irony, the man who risked his life handling one of the world's most dangerous reptiles was mortally wounded by a stingray, a usually passive sea creature which attacks only if threatened. Irwin, 44, was stung in the chest by the stingray's barbed tail, which whips up in a reflex action. The accident happened while he was filming a TV documentary called Oceans' Deadliest at Batt Reef, near Port Douglas.

i had no idea that stingrays could actually be fatal.

while i do agree that Irwin's whole "takin' my little ankle-biter into the croc pit" thing was pretty foolish, i don't know if i'd go so far as to say he was a lunatic on all his other expeditions. i think he was just enthusiastic about what he did and quite fearless about it.

Oh man... that's the worst part, having to hear it/told. My heart really reaches out to her and their children. I think of my father everyday and it still pains me. Not being there probably hurts the most.

I hope the bloody leave her alone in the media. I could barely stand to be around my neighbors after my father died. Sometimes there is nothing anyone else in the world can do to assuage that pain other than being alone and making your own peace without the constant reminder from others.

... now I'm all sad thinking about this.

I now understand what "xwingband" was getting so irate over.... no not Steve Erwin's death but the people who have nothing nice to add to the topic but still post......I for one am an animal lover, my wife works and has worked with animals for years. we both respected what Steve did as far as bringing awareness to people on not only the dangers but the beauty of nature. he died doing what he loved. I hope I am that lucky! I've read thousands of posts on this subject. and it comes down to the fact that most people even though they think they know everything they dont. I know I don't! I only know that To some Steve Erwin was hated.... but to more he was loved and respected for what he has done.
R.I.P Steve Erwin.

Those who hate Steve are only very jealous of him. I see no reason to hate that man, he was always a friendly man and has inspired many and educated all.

Just because he did things that many people are to afraid of doing is no reason to hate him.

Xwing, as I said before, I never knew your father, but if you are any reflection of him, he was a great man.

I never thought of him as a lunatic, just enthusiastic, which is why i watched the show. Who could have thought a stingray to be his downfall. My conodolences to the family. [:(]

I don't think people hated him. I know a lot of Australians felt rather embarrassed by him though. He always had far more success overseas than in Australia. I think the embarrassment stems from him promoting an overly stereotypical image of Australians that we have long being trying to escape.

He did live a life of danger, and its not surprising that that is what took him in the end.

I read a report that his family was being flown over to where his body was yesterday. So I would assume that initial reports that his wife was not told came out straight after his death, and that his wife would have been informed soon afterwards. I find it very disrespectful that the media can report someone’s death before their family has been informed.

i didnt hate him, i watched the shows all the time myself, i just thought some of the stuff he done was really stupid, thats all.

and that one day, it was goin to get him killed, and it did.

i do feel sorry for his family. i know i will get flamed bigtime over this but theres a fine line between bravery and stupidity.

and sometimes i think he crossed that line.

bah, say whatcha want about the 'Croc Hunter. i loved that dude and his TV shows. damn shame he was taken out by a normally passive sea creature.

was he a little bit foolish/reckless/flamboyant? sure. but "stupid?" i don't think so. he was a guy trying to make an entertaining show about animals and nature, and i think he pulled it off spectacularly. hell, even Cartman on South Park acted like him for an entire episode.

so no more Croc Hunter dissin', [mr. mackey voice], M'kay? [/mr. mackey voice]

I tend to consider foolish/reckless/flamboyant behavior as being pretty stupid. Particularly when you have wife and kids to consider.

But people loved him because he acted like a nutter, doing stuff that they would never dream of doing because they know that it would likely end with their head being bitten off.

I have seen sting rays many a time along the coast. If anyone suggested to me that they should go swimming over it I would have said that that’s a bad idea. If they did it I would have called them stupid and if they got away with it I would call them lucky.

Steve’s was a nice guy with very good intentions and it was hard not to like him. But he had been very lucky up until now.

actually I wouldn't flame that comment... although his wife knew what she was getting into when she met him.. he did push the envilope quite a few times. when I met him in Silver Springs you could tell he had a great passion for what he does. I have also heard that he would go for extremely long periods of time with no food or sleep to Finnish something he started.

Hey guys, let's not get all wrapped-up in the 'it was bound to happen' argument. Let's celebrate the life of an absolute one-off
and be thankful that he was able to do what he loved doing, right up until the last minute. The man died the way he lived - and I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

Take it easy Steve. We love you mate.
