Are we talking grip materials in general or the classic T-grips?

scaarmor
12-12-2005, 11:24 AM
Grips in general.

And I dont know which "brands" will fit Tims 1.5 hilt (which yes I am using). However I used to ride motorcross (dirt bike racing) and currently ride a street bike and have seen several different dia. handlebars both above and below 1.5, so they are out there. You just have to find the certian look or style you want.

My newest saber, which is being built from Tim's modular saber system, will have a grip that is similar to the thread wrapping found on Japanese Katanas. I have the silk already, and two nice pieces of simulated ray skin. It's gonna be beautiful when it is done.

In the past, I have use T-track type materials like those found on the movie sabers, as well as thick coatings of epoxy-type paints for grips. For a saber I built for a friend, I used a continuous wrapping of red silk and then epoxied it into place.

Well, for grips in general I've seen lots done. I know of people using 1.5 ID PVC, I've seen basswood sanded and painted to fit, mouse pads cut up, windshield wipers, etc...

If you want specific brands of handle grips or windshield wipers I really don't have a clue there. Perhaps someone can enlighten us both.

When my kits are in (scheduled for delivery today) I will begin looking for the handlebar grips I want, and when I find good ones that fit correctly I will post a brand name. Also, I forgot to mention earlier, you can use skateboard grip tape and cut it into patterns, it is thin, cuts easily, has permenant glue already in place, and holds to almost any smooth surface very well.

Ooo... skateboard grip tape. That sounds a lot like what I was looking for for my stunt saber. I'd like to see what kind of other grip type stuff I can find too though. I was going to look into what they use on golf clubs and tennis rackets. I was starring at my roommates tennis racket and really was intrigued by using it to wrap around the hilt.

Golf clubs and tennis rackets (the ones I have seen) are just 3/4-1 inch vinyl strips wrapped to overlap. The foam/rubber used on tread mill handles can be found at auto part stores labeled as roll bar padding. You can also use hockey grip tape, which they use to wrap thier stick handles, at sporting good store for pretty cheap.

For my saber I used black auto body molding. It already has the 3m adhesive, so it worked well.

Tim makes the grips that are like the windshield wipers in his store. It's a really good deal cause its easily to apply and i'm sure they're durable.

some of that double-sided foam tape from Lowe's works well...cut it into strips & cover each strip with black electrical tape once they're on the hilt. there's also a really easy way to make them even-length once they're on the hilt. this method is for cheapskate jedi[:D]

I found this plasti-dip stuff that I will try to use for my grip. It is this liquid stuff that dries into a kind of rubber.
Wouldn't grip tape rub on your hands too much?

Craft foam, applied with double-sided carpet tape. It looks like there may be self-adhesive version of this stuff available now. I'm going to order some online soon, and try it out.

Interesting to hear someone else mention it. I'm fabbing up four hilts as christmas gifts--still haven't made one for myself, and am using tsukamaki for one of them. I only recently tracked down some very nice leather tsukaito. I'm interested to see how it looks against chrome, so i decided against any ray skin or other material for the same. Please, post photos when you've completed yours.

I found some handle grip stuff today while searching local hardware and auto parts stores. It is 3/16"x 1 1/4" foam that had adhesive on the back and felt great in the hand, labeled camper shell weatherstrip/seal. It felt alot like the thin foam handles on shop brooms, if anyone knows what I am talking about.

Just a thought...I found some heatshrink tubing at the hardware store yesterday (not that strange), but I found it in 1" dia. Has anyone ever seen it in larger dia.? Say 1 1/2" dia.??? Would be nice to find some and just apply some heat to make it permenant...Again, just a thought.

scaarmor
12-15-2005, 12:41 AM
What do you mean "strips come out"? What I was meaning was to put the heat shrink tube over the hilt, apply some heat to shrink it to size, and it should hold rather tight. Besides, have you ever felt heat shrink tubing for its grip type quality? I think it would feel great, almost like a cross between thin rubber with the feel of foam.

Cain

Stan Johnson
12-15-2005, 10:28 AM
Heat Shrink would have the perfect feel for a grip, and it would look great, too. How durable would it be as a grip material, though?

braven, i have done the same before too. i found a thinwalled pvc that fit right over the pipe and done as you, cut out a design and anchored it with a poprivet. what i used to paint the grip was something i found works extremely well, in the automotive section at wally world look for truck bed spray on liner in a spray can. it gives a textured, lil bumpy look and feel just like injected molded plastic parts. gives a secure grip and feel with the lil textured bumpy stuff.

scaarmor
12-15-2005, 12:15 PM
Stan,
I am sure it would be as durable as any other rubber(ish) grip out there. Have you ever tried to rip it off before-its a pain in the a$%! You usually have to cut it off and any rubber type material will fall off if put to the blade.

Guys, if you look at the pictures thread, my Yoda saber does use a heatshrink piece. I have this awsome store in town where you can find almost anything electronics related. That's where I found 1.5 heatshrink tube. Dissapointing though. It looks like dirty rubber no matter what I do to it and I can't cut but simple sleeves of it. On the Yoda saber, I ended up taking it off and replacing it with PVC pipe.

the best thing i have found is gaffer's tape. It's expensive but it sticks very well and lasts forever. It looks great too, and can be cut into shapes very easily. I have found the t-grips to be a little uncomfortble to hold tightly, so I looked for an alternative, skateboard tape sounds like a good idea too. They make grips for car steeringwheels that would look awesome if they were cut and trimmed to fit a saber hilt too.

You were just talking about car steering wheel covers, and I thought up an idea since I'm a Jedi and grease monkey at heart. At PepBoys and at Kragen(here in California, Checker in other areas) they have repair kits for their Grant muscle car steering wheels! You know, the kind with the foam/rubber insulate stuff for the grips. (The cheap Grant steering wheels, and some other fakies) This would work awesome for a lightsaber, it feels really good once it is broken in and conforms to how you hold the wheel. I'm sure it would do the same for the lightsaber, kinda a personal lightsaber touch, if you will. Great idea!!! I can't believe I never thought of it!!

This will be my first hilt that I make; but my uncle works for GE. I was stripping some copper wire and some of the rubber insulation thats on the 1/2 wire felt pretty good to hold. Anyway; I tried melting some of the cut insulation together(playing with the blowtorch like a little kid) and it worked pretty good. I have to try melting the seams together a little more though. I am kinda concerned that the seams might slpit out in time and the thing will fall off. Also another idea; that rhino-bed lining for trucks would work pretty good. Comes as like a pasty good in a can; there are off brands that will be much cheaper though. Auto stores should have that at least.

If not, there are other automotive products like Rhino-liner. Dupli-color, plasti-cote, dura-back, all these are available if you know where to look. Most of them, you can brush or roll on, so break out the model car brushes!!!

Automotive trim molding from places like pep boys works good but I'm going to some CARBON FIBER tubes. They fit over the mod hilt and over a sink tube. Sink tube is really tight but no prob. The spaceleft between the mod hilt an the carbon fiber tube is loose but not un workable. here are some pics to look at==>

OH! I love grips.

I have used one sided foam tape that is sooo freakin sticky, it is hard to get off.A friend of mine also used that clear rubber tubing you can but by the foot at hardware stores. My most recent saber used Medical tape over black paint. It is basically like scotch tape in size, but it is stretchy and stickier, and it has the texture much like that of a maglite grip. The knurled texture.

I was going to keep this one to myself until I could do it and get a pic.. but that could be awhile.

I plan on working out a grip section using a Turks Head Knot. I have one on my Bo Staff and the grip is awesome, even if it gets wet as the nature of the knot is to push wet away to allow for improved grip.

If you've seen this used on a saber, could you point me to a pic of it?

As Master Na'Ashar brought up, e-grips are fantastic. They come in a wide variety of colors & sizes. They don't stick very well on their own, you have to add gorilla glue to them and let them set over night. I attached mine to straight to the metal, let them dry, and then spray painted the whole works, not to worry NOTHING sticks the surface of the strips. A butter knife scrapped gently over the strips removes the paint and it looks like the stripes have been imbedded into the metal.

You can get them at Radio Shack or from their their website

What
08-02-2006, 07:28 AM
last time I went to Radio Shack, I gave them the serial number to the item i wanted. They typed it in wrong for the first 3 time and kept asking me what it was, so I had to repeat it over and over. So in the end they told me the didnt have the item. So i dont know if they didnt have it or they didnt know how to type in a series of numbers and letters in a specific order...

At the local radio shack the guys know me well, in fact on more than one occasion they have had to ask me how something works because they couldn't explain it to the customer.[xx(]

I only get it on componets, tools, supplies, not on the big stuff. And most stuff I can buy cheaper online, but it is nice to be able to buy some things local.

the price online might be cheaper, but shipping can add a lot. personally, i like to look and feel what i'm about to buy rather than reading about it

I used 40 O-Rings on my sink tube saber. 1 1/8 rings around a 1 1/4 tube work awesome.

it can be good for other new people as well that he necroposted. it brings the thread thats been hidden prob pages and pages back up front. and give the new guys some ideas, mayb help them from asking questions that have already been answered in this thread long ago.
and he was also adding to the thread, which is a bonus as well (more ideas for others)
think ill add one of my personal grip ideas that ive used. which is window/door weather stripping foam. its black and about a quarter inch wide, comes in a roll of a few feet and has adhesive backing. it also comes in half inch, oh and also comes in white for those wanting to do a stormtrooperish or whatnot saber ;)
another good grip i have found comes from semi older gm truck fuel pumps (and some other vehicles) around the fuel pump is sometimes what is called a insulator, its basically just a round peice of foam that helps keep it from freezing. anyhow its about 2 and a half to 3 inches long and fits nicely on 1-1/4 inch tube. some ive gotten fit nice on 1.5 inch tubes.
