Id try the 7.2v one.. as its included with the PLI as well....
that being said.. I have never used one of the newer style PLI's.. I only have the older PLI's (no resistors included or socket for them)

You will have to tell us what blew. Anyhoo that thing uses the LM3914 IC. For a resistor value that works how you want it to just hook a pot up to it and set it how you want it. The 8.4 v stock one is what I would use if you don't want to dial it in with a pot.

Yes the 8.4v one would be best. A 7.4v li ion pack will be 8.4v at full charge.
1.) are you using a fresh pack? can you meter the output?
2.) what style of PLI do you have? one where only 1 led lights up? or the style where all light up to meet your voltage?

Only reading this thread now, but I wanted to clarify that the resistor values on the LM3914 aren't so clear cut, as it is actually two resistors in series between three pins (4 which is grounded, 7 and 8). The pair not only configures the voltage range, but also the LED current. There may be a chance you could start overdriving those LEDs while using a pot to configure the voltage range.
