cleaning?

I plan on painting my hilt in the near future. I was wondering what is good to clean the parts to give them a nice shine?

Also would minor scratches and dings affect the paint job? They aren't that big or dip, would I be able to buff them out or something?

Prior to painting? Hot soapy water, a really good rinse, then wipe it down with acetone and allow to dry completely.

Minor dings can be polished out with some fine sandpaper. If they're small enough, they may disappear with a coat or two of paint.

would Rubbing Alcohol work in place of acetone? I'm pretty sure it has it in it

isopropyl alcohol has nothing to do with acetone, but it should work just as well. the point is using a solvent to get rid of oil (fingerprints) and any leftover soap.

I believe Fingernail Polish Remover has Acetone in it. Rubbing alcohol has 99% isopropyl alcohol and 1% distilled water :P no acetone in it at all.

If you go for fingernail polish remover, check the label. Some of them have moisturizers and other such things that will leave a residue. Look for the one that is 100% acetone. Rubbing alcohol works fine as well.

Be sure your parts are completely dry before you start painting. Just a little bit of solvent residue will mess up your paint job pretty quickly.

you should go get some acetone man, it is cheap and works best. Don't skimp on paint supplies. You will pay for it later. ;)
