Ok so Ive been looking at all the pictures of blade colors and I cant see the difference between blue and royal blue. Can somebody please describe the differeces between the two colors. Does anyone have a preference? Is one brighter/better than the other?

HiddenMooCow

In my opinion I saw that the blue has a baby blue core look and the royal blue can appear with a deep blue effect around it with a white core. Again, that is just my opinion. I don't think one look brighter than the other but if you were to have to choose one, I'd recommend the royal blue.

A picture is worth a thousand words... that axim is probably so true. If you can't see a difference then it's even sillier to go off a description. Unless you are trying to match a certain color then go with Royal Blue. If you don't want to end up with a blue you think is too light that's the answer.

I really recommend royal blue. It looks as though you'll be more happy in the long run compared to regular blue.

Lord Maul

and on the lumen chart it is like 2 times as bright as regular blue

Lumens tell technical info but sometimes they usually don't help. I think the reason why they have different lumen outputs is to make them appear to be at the same level when seen by the eye. Like if you were to see green at 30 lumens and red at 30 lumens, the green would look brighter. At least that's my theory please correct my mistakes if I'm wrong.

Lord Maul
08-17-2006, 10:41 AM
i think your wrong because our eyes are most sensitive to green so it has the highest lumen count. it is a gauge of how bright the color appears to the human eye

Actually on the lux III red orange has the highest lumen count and 2nd is the regular red. Yet in some comparisons they look the same. But thanks for the correction, I really like the information and understanding everything about color and lumens.

xwingband
08-17-2006, 11:00 AM
NO!!! You were correct to begin with. Lumens mean nothing to the eye. The colors that will be most sensative to our eyes would be the Amber and Green (the ideal is a yellowish green color).

Ever wonder why a 1W green is pretty nice while other 1W colors blow? Because green is a good color for our eyes. It's the same reason they use red or blue on lights meant for night use. Our eyes will adjust faster to the darkness using those colors.

Moocow is direct on there. Red-Orange is double the lumens of green yet it doesn't really appear that way. More accurately if you want to guage brightness the surroundings illluminated would tell better than looking at the blade itself.

Do not make a choice based on the lumens for Blue vs. Royal Blue either! mW to lumens the Royal Blue is half of the 30lumens on a Blue yet no one is saying the Royal Blue is any lower.

In my opinion...the regular blue is the "brighter" or "lighter" of the two. It seems to have a naturally lighter color, while putting off more light. However, the Royal Blue is a far richer color, but appears to me to be slightly more "dim".

It's all about your preference man. A good depiction would be to look at a blue lightsaber in one of the movies. The regular blue is closer to the core of a blue lightsaber. Whereas a royal blue is closer to the outside, darker edge.

Heh, nice. But silentbob don't let any others influence you. Just look at the properties of each one. IMO if you want a brighter and more white core you should go with royal blue. But with regualar blue you might get a more baby blue like core.

With my royal blue, it's really bright at the base. But when you get down the blade closer to the top, it's has more of a purple hue to it...then at the top it's blue again.

Judging only by pictures I've seen, it goes like this:

ANH: Cyan. (Although that's only due to problems with the ANH DVD colorization, not "GL's vision")

ESB: Blue

All prequel films: Royal Blue.

Since the Anakin ROTS saber is Royal Blue, it's safe to say that Royal blue is "the new, GL-approved Skywalker blade color". Not that we give a crap about that...

I have to add my 2 pence to the pot.

As I have said many times before throw the lumens chart out the friggin' window and burn it. The Royal Blue is rated differently and therefore has a rating off from everything else. Blue can range greatly depending on the bin from a green-teal to almost Royal Blue. I do NOT think that it is brighter then Royal Blue and to be honest I would say that the 1 watt royal blue is as bright as a blue 3 watt. My personal order of colors from brightest to dimmest is:

Royal Blue - it can really hurt your eyes if you stare at it to long
Green - again bright but crossing blades with RB and the greeen fades to it
Amber - It really seems to me that amber is a tad brighter then red and red-orange but this really is to close to call
Red and Red/Orange - I LOVE red as much as Royal Blue, r/o is nice but the straight red just has that blood red Sith color that I am looking for in a red saber
Blue/Cyan - six of one half a dozen of the other, seems that bin codes really are what makes the difference here and so far my cyan and blue LEDs look about the same
White - with no discs, film etc. it really is pretty and the option to make the blade any color you want so far out weighs the dim factor that it isn't funny this is great for those that want pink, purple, etc.

I think that is about it. May even be overkill but I thought I would throw it out there.
Bottom line is that the two sabers that I am doing for Halloween will be Royal Blue and Red

Dont forget one major thing when talking about blue and royal blue led colors which is the Bin number. A blue can range from light blue to what looks like royal blue. Here is a rough description of how bin# can affect color.

Blue bin 1-2 people tell me i sold them a royal blue
Blue bin 3-5 a good light blue..what most people want
Cyan bin 1-2 is what most people want in a cyan..blue greenish
Cyan bin 3-5 people tell me i sold them a green
