Wow... is their a thread showing how to build that ability to change the colors?

start with 3 pots and a pile of RGB 5mm LEDs. Aise from that I couldn't tell ya. I don't see anyone else doing it with strings so I doubt it. I have seen some use a dip switch to get 16 variations. IIRC but that was with a single RGB not a string.
