so we are in chat now and decided we need a car thread so... here it is!
just a place for fellow gear heads to discuss all things motor.

here is a bit of my background:
dad was always a gear head, muscle cars in his youth and still intrest while i was a young buck that led to my current obsession.
i was bitten by the import craze of the 90's, as thats when i got my license and it was the "cool" thing to do. grandpa had a '65 el camino he bought new and saved for me when i turned 16. mom called it a "death trap" and didnt want me driving it. i told her i cant afford a car, so she bought a newer car for me. gave the el camino to my dad for better care and keeping it a proper hierloom.
mom got me a 1989 civic hatchback. it was great until i realized it didnt have the hot motor of the Si model. i later blew the engine ( ;) ) and replaced it with a nice japanese only 1.6 twin cam "ZC". it ate the newer b16 vtec civics for lunch.

fast forward to 2001, i had joined the navy and bought myself a "drift car" after watching a bunch of japanese vids of the sport. 1991 240sx was my weapon of choice.
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/23677_119002024776520_100000001707222_319847_75845 24_n.jpg

did a few mods, nothing major. springs, shocks, intake, exhaust. then i decided i really wanted a 1986 toyota corolla GT-S (AE86). legendary drift car. its what all the pros started with. by the time i was done with it, it handled like a go-kart (and had similar horsepower numbers lol). started drifting at events called "Drift Day" at irwindale race park in southern california (now world known as "the house of drift").
AE86 when i got it
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/23677_119002011443188_100000001707222_319844_43044 31_n.jpg

and after i spent some time and money...
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/23677_118998241443565_100000001707222_319816_16043 80_n.jpg

fast forward to 2005-2008, i moved to japan and got myself a 1995 silvia (same as a 240sx but a much faster turbo engine). this thing was fully built with 400hp, full suspension, roll cage, 18" wheels... the works. i was bummed i had to sell both of the other cars when i left san diego, but it was worth it. i picked up the silvia for a steal at $6k.
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/23677_119001998109856_100000001707222_319840_81189 90_n.jpg
and here is a vid of me getting sideways at ebisu circuit in japan. she was a beast!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnYz1-o7dwE

2008 i left japan with all of the parts form the silvia (if it unbolted i brought it!), and rebuilt it with a base model 1995 240sx. everything is a direct bolt on. and i mean ALL of the parts. the only difference by looking at the two cars was the japanese one had the steering wheel on the right.

then i sold the 240sx because i was getting tired of the stiff suspension beating me up and scraping on everything. and because it was time to embrace my family heritage.
i got myself a 98 camaro z-28.
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/184739_201760116500710_100000001707222_807003_2163 676_n.jpg
it was as close as i could get to a 2010 hahaha
she has 400 LEGAL horsepower, drives like a champ, and drifts like a big fat lazy pig hahaha its got some suspension under it but just not stiff enough for drifting. it was built for autocross and fun daily driving. and it doest the later like nobody's business haha
things i will take care of next are replacing the seats with better, "not worn out and ripped" upgrades. wheels need to go wider, as the 17x9.5 chrome is not wide enough to fill the fenders or fit enough rubber to hold that 400hp. plans are 17x11 all the way around. MAX GRIP! oh and of course i need to order some stiffer springs. the koni shocks should be able to take it just fine. will keep updates as i make progress!

discuss! what is your automotive addiction? american muscle? german tuners? japanese domestic market? its all good here!

i've never been too into cars. i did some sport compact car stuff in the past, but all aesthetic. i had a 1998 civic coupe with full coilovers, 17's, some other crap, but again, all looks.
this was my real pride and joy, until we had our baby (1 year old today actually :) )
i got rid of it when she was born.

Don't have any pictures on this laptop (PC out for repairs). But this is pretty close to what i drive with the addition to white stripes on the bottom sides:

The second car that I ever owned, a 1988 T-Bird, became the subject of some very odd autobody experiments while I learned the trade. Paid $50 for the car when I was in high school. I wish that I had taken some before pictures.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx120/Mav750k/DSCN1027-Copy.jpg

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx120/Mav750k/DSCN1028-Copy.jpg

Note the custom wheel well flares and hood intake. I handmade from fiberglass. The car probably weighed another 300 lbs with all that junk glued onto it. Don't laugh at the wheels, they were free and I was a teenager.

My old loyal 88 K-5 Blazer. Restored it a couple years ago. Again, I wish that I had taken before pictures.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx120/Mav750k/DSCN1801-Copy.jpg

The first color choice that my wife had me paint her motorcycle was hideous, look for yourself.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx120/Mav750k/30790_427667226753_662981753_5536717_1968273_n.jpg

That is her car in the background with the simple bolt on body pieces in primer. Luckily she let me repaint the bike to match her color choices for the car.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx120/Mav750k/downsize1.jpg

Here is it next to my slightly customized 06 Street Bob, that I don't have any more pictures of on the laptop. I'll try to remember some more when I think of it.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx120/Mav750k/downsize.jpg

And, I finally finished the work on the glue on pieces and threw some paint onto the wifes car this weekend.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx120/Mav750k/Tiburon.jpg

I would add some of my 67 GTO, but she is in primer and under rebuild atm. Hopefully I get back to work on her soon, but the honey do list is getting longer by the min.

I grew up across the street from the Fiero plant in pontiac MI. I bought my first Fiero in '87, a silver '87 Sport Coupe. Sold it in'91. Late 2005 I bought a red '86 GT, my favorite Fiero body style. It is currently undergoing an engine swap and will be repainted this summer. More things to do to her like new side window glass, new seats, tires, brake upgrade, etc.

Okay, I want in on some of this. This isn't the nicest ride I've owned, but she's what I've got right now, and she's probably the most fun:

http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh637/TuxedoCartman/IMG_0586.jpg

2011 CB400SF. That was taken on the Izu Peninsula on my first trip out of Tokyo, right after I bought it. On all the twisting, winding, hairpin one-way roads down there, you couldn't ask for a better vehicle. You could really flog it, and not be breaking the law (too much). Comfortable enough for touring, and far more capable performance-wise than my skills will allow for. Here's another taken later last year:

http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh637/TuxedoCartman/IMG_0764.jpg

That time it was me and a friend (both of us of, umm.... "ample" proportions, shall we say?) on a ride from Tokyo to Kyoto. Took the scenic route, making for about a 700 mile round trip. Even with two American-sized butts AND all that luggage on it, the little 400cc bike was capable of doing 100 kph (62 mph) comfortably on the freeway, with plenty to spare. Should note that the speed limit is 80 kph everywhere here, so I wasn't going as slow as it would seem.

Man, I wish they sold that bike in the states. Going to miss it when I have to come back, gaudy paint-scheme and all. :(

oooh finally something i can contribute to.

the cars I've had over the last few years, in order.

I had to sell this one when we bought our house. Still bummed about that and I've been trying to find something I really liked ever since
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7024/6827313049_306cf1f226_z.jpg

then came the BMW e30 that I loved but eventually had to sell because it was such a money pit.
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5096/5403239184_c80ca3fd09_z.jpg

This came at the same time, had to sell it as well just to cut costs :(
http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6128/6041910001_3af504d91f_z.jpg

And finally to my current car, which I despise and hope to sell ASAP.

@VicSkimmr - I used to own an 06 JCW Mini Cooper. That was quite possibly one of the funnest cars I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot! But I gotta say, I'm jealous of your original Mini. Those things are impossible to find for sale in America anymore, and I always wanted one.

Oooh... nice! The new GTR is a fine, fine automobile, as is the newer Skyline GT (Infiniti G35 coupe in the US); but for me a Skyline will always be either the R32 or R34, GTS-T or GT-R. But then again, I've got a thing for all 90's Japanese sports cars. Would still trade vital parts of my anatomy for a dark grey S15 Silvia.

I always felt bad for the R33. It wasn't the driver's car that the R32 was, and it wasn't as good looking as the R34; it was just sorta stuck in the middle. Still, better than 99.9% of the cars we had for sale in America at the time. :) Yeah, cars were my old, expensive hobby, then I moved on to motorcycles. It's actually fiscally responsible of me to get into saber building, by comparison.

dexios, nice! Glad to see more motorcycle riders here. Busas are gorgeous.

Thank you for the Yakoff Smirnoff joke! I don't feel quite so old now. :D

I'll admit I don't follow car news NEARLY as close as I used to, but I thought they'd scrapped the Skyline designation with the new GT-R's, both in Japan and America. In short, all new ones are called just "GT-R". Which, if that's the case, I wonder if they share any platform at all with the current Skylines? Hmm...

Edit: Ah, yes, from Wikipedia...

Following the end of R34 production in 2002, Nissan announced their plans to separate the GT-R model from the Skyline name, creating an entirely new vehicle although it would be loosely based on the same platform as the Skyline. This new car, now known simply as the Nissan GT-R, debuted in 2007 in Tokyo. Released to the consumers in 2008, it was the first GT-R available worldwide, entering the North American market for the first time.
Although based on the FM platform used by the V36 generation Skyline[citation needed], the GT-R uses an evolved Premium Midship (PM) platform. The car retains its heritage by using the chassis code CBA-R35, or simply R35.

oh yeah so i sold the beast of a camaro for something a little more fuel efficent.
no pics yet cuz, well its nothing to write home about. yet...

its a 2012 Civic HF. yes, honda brought back the HF trim level. its bassically a package that gets added to the LX (dealer threw it in for free cuz they didnt have any grey LX on the lot).
i actually wanted an older 2006-2011 8th gen civic, but people were charging just as much for the older models as a NEW one! so i figure if i am paying that much, might as well get the one that comes with new car smell!

so i plan on just modding this one a wee bit. BC is releasing coilovers for it this july. (suspension is just barely different enough from last generation, so all new aftermarket parts need to be developed)
its also going to get some decent 16x8 wheels, most likely some "old school mesh" type.

so thats about it. oh and i need to tint the windows and toss some beats in the trunk.

overall i am LOVING IT! first new car i have ever had. everything works. its comfy. its quiet. and *gasp* it has four doors!!! getting kids in/out is a sinch.

best of all, my wife said if i get something fuel efficient, i can get something else to toss around the track.
*ahem*
AE86, HERE I COME!!!!!!!!!!
more on that later.

meanwhile, i need to finish up a very short notice deployment on the hospital ship USNS Mercy.
yeah, i found out 2 blocks away from the dealership, and i was on a plane to hawaii 12 days later.

so i will update when i get back, and the wheels and coilovers will most likely be ready for me in the garage when i get home!

might take some real fabrication depending on your e-brake handle design, but most cars it wouldnt be too hard. i actually have something in particular i will be putting in my ae86. most dedicated drift cars have a primary/stand-alone hydraulic rear brake, actuated by a big lever, just like most rally cars.
example (this is the actual model im getting from Powered by Max in san diego)

is that not a perfect opportunity to toss a saber hilt on there?! i will even paint the bar the appropriate color (red for vader, etc.) so the hilt will be facing down (pommel up).

or, if not the parking brake hilt, maybe a .45 scale shift knob! (manual trans only)

i just need to figure out what saber would be most comfortable to grab in a hurry while im drifting. a graflex could be painful. lol

This was my baby. Cliffjumper, after the Autobot (because they cast Bumblebee as a Camaro). A basic 1988 Camaro, but he had a carbureted LS1 in him. Bought him for a $1000. I had plans of fixing him up, redoing the interior (which was just rough), getting a nice paint job on him, the whole 9-yards. But the poor thing finally gave up the ghost. Something inside the engine, well, broke and I didn't have the time to take it apart to find out what and fix it. Looking back, I should have salvaged more than just the T-Top glass and the rims and tires before sending him to join the Junkions.

So I upgraded. Cliffjumper was reborn as a 1998 Z28 Convertible.

Both cars have worn the CLFJMPR license plate.

And then there is this one. A three year, weekend labor of love that my dad and I spent rebuilding her. She was a rusted husk when we bought her. You can tell she isn't anymore. 1965 Mustang Coupe.

I had a motorcycle as well (can't find a picture of it at the moment); a 2008 Suzuki Boulevard C50. Rode for 5 years no matter the temperature or the weather. But when two people tried to hit me in as many consecutive days. And I tried riding it into a ditch following day. AND almost laid it down in my own darn driveway I decided it was time to let it go.

By the way Boj-Vaati, that bike of yours is one of my all time favorites. Beautiful color too man.

Sold the jetta, picked up the new ride. Unfortunately this'll probably push my saber build off for another year :(

The color is hell to represent on camera, but here's what it actually looks like
