I'm a little worried about getting a 3W red LED

I have seen some pictures in the galleries on the red LED sabers and it looks to me that they don't show up as good as green or blue but I have also heard that they put out more lumens than the others. I haven't been able to find any comparison shots of a red 3W LED and any other 3W color so it makes me skeptical to get that color. So could one of you give me some advice on this color and if I do get this color, what blade should I get and from where? I really appreciate your help and I am sorry if this is too noobish for you to handle. Feel free to flame me if you need to.

As for what color you want, it is a matter of personal preference. I would not really take the lumen chart too seriously. With fresh batteries and a decently made blade, they are both really dang bright. I ended up liking the red more than i had initially anticipated. I am looking forward to having a few extra bucks to make a blue one next. Good luck to you and be sure and post a few pics when you get your sabers done. We all like to see them

well, that really does help seeing how some people consider the green to be uber bright but I'm not getting a custom one, I'm getting a MR converted one. An anikan to be excact.

The red is bright, our eyes just respond better to green, thats all. Just pick the color you like best.

I find the red is really bright. The different colours provide different "feels" of brightness... hard to explain.

Here's a shot of red, green, and royal blue, all 3w. The red was on low batteries and still held up.

Yeah, but you see in that RGB shot it looks like the red fades more at the tip than the others. I know that the core is actually white and stuff but is the fade also camera magic or the low batteries?

<font size="3"><font color="blue">Why are you concerning yourself the pics of the RGB LEDs? You're not getting that for your saber, are you? It didn't sound like it. The individual LEDs in one of those doesn't have the same wattage as a single color 3W LED, so the "fade" won't be the same.

I think red is one of the better colors, for LED. Especially if you have any experience with the disappointment of red EL wire.</font id="blue"></font id="size3">

Interested in a comparison? I have my MHS green on Corbin's board and a MR Vader Conversion, would that satisfy your need?

Honestly, forget about brightness when picking colors. It's very subjective, and unlike EL there is no obvious "Oh, that one is dim" color. The difference you probably are making a big deal about is the amount of light it seems to cast... our eyes are less sensative to Red. It doesn't throw off that much light to our eyes, but to me I have no problems with the brightness.

ok, heres something i found out a ways back. if you use the red/orange led, which has the higher lumens. the 3watter one, and use tims diffuser in the blade, it comes out more red than with corbins film. the film lets sore of the orange color thru. but tims diffuser cuts it back some to let the red show up more.

and im tellin ya, the 140 lumen red/orange with tims diffuser in the blade is so much brighter than a stock MR fx is. i know, i held mine up against a stock one a seller was sellin at the con, and even the seller said, da%$$ thats bright.

so if ya want real bright try that route.

Read my other posts, I don't want to deal with soldering on my first saber I just want to get a pre-made one for my first one so I can better understand how it works and see everything in front of me. I'm not sure Ultra would do it. Does he even have any? Unless you use Corbin's film it's quite pointless too to add the driver.

I know it's your perogative but... there are digrams and tutorials out there. Why do you need to look at it? You'd have to open up the saber to see the wiring and at that point you've done half of the conversion. As long as you can follow a diagram you should be fine... unless you've never soldered in your life, but even then soldering is about the act seeing the results doesn't teach you anything.

Well, the only reason I want the 3W driver is for the powering up and powering down effects and I think Ultra could do it. I don't know yet that's why I have to ask him. If he does he will probably get it from TCSS so that's good. But I can't get tim to make an Anikan conversion because he doens't offer anikan conversions, look at the MR conversion products page. He only has the Vader and Mace ones.

He just today said the kits will be up around Tuesday (tomorrow) and he offers kits/conversions together. In other words, as soon as the kits are available he starts offering conversions.

Tim has done an MR + Corbin's board conversion before so it's not an issue of whether he does/doesn't do it.

BTW did you know the MR board itelf offers a power up/down? It's faster and not suitable for use with Corbin's film but often you can't tell it's much different. It's definatly not instant on/off.

No, the front one is a MR conversion. The back one is a stock Mace I believe.

Like I said if anyone wants I can compare all three in a vid. It'd be a Corbin (green) vs. MR conversion (red) vs. Stock Anakin ROTS. For a Luke ROTJ ignition the MR conversion works well. Corbin's up/down is pretty slow in comparison, but to get the better extension/retraction it needs to be. His board depend on the film with the core.

Yeah, it's all in the wiring. It's because the MR normally lights up banks at a time. When you link all of those wires togther in the conversion it equates to the same thing. It's not as nice as Corbin's but it's FAR better than nothing.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate the information but now I'm yet again in a color struggle, I just simply can't decide on what color I want, so maybe I'll ask tim if he can get me a LED converted Anakin with a quick change LED kit and a green, red, and blue quick change ready LEDs.

I'm not sure how well any "quick change kit" would work... with the "buttons" and all it's not just a simple screw in and out like an MHS hilt. The conversions are actually bolted down.

Really if you can't decide you need to go to a white and filters.

Does the red have a white core effect or does that just souly depend o the blade. What I'm asking is is it easy to get a coring effect with red or do the pics just not show what you really see, again.

They both seem pretty good but too bad corbin is away, I was thinking about getting both TCSS and corbins.

It is hard to see the true difference in pictures between blade film and Tim's diffuser. On Red Tim's diffuser is not as true red the white tube tends to distort it, but with the blade film the color is truer to red in color. If you do 5 watt leds then Tim's diffuser is best because the 5 watt tends to over power the blade film and it does not look as good. But the bottom line is that you must decide for yourself which you prefer.[;)]

Yeah, it's up to preferance. There is no "core" on Tim's, and Corbin's "core" IS NOT WHITE. It's often a lighter color of the base color. To a camera it will look white, but in person it's colored.

There is only one way to get a white core and it's more work than some people put into their hilts.[xx(]

Ultra uses the same diffuser as Tim, in fact he gets a lot of stuff from Tim. What I would do is just get Tim to do your conversion on a Anakin MR and Get the blade with his diffuser, then later order a blade from Corbin then decide which you prefer. Corbin's blade and Tim's blade both fit the blade holder.

Ultra's pics are overeposed, but whatever... not many try to get realistic shots of the blades. Especially when in sales. Tim's are probably the most accurate I've seen. I always try to go even farther and get dead on shots.

I think that's about it... I've actually gotten everything in order and decided on my color and force alignment, but it's got kind of a twist. I won't tell you what I've decided on but you'll see in a few weeks and I'll post pics and videos of me and my best friend messin with it. dude ive used red leds, no need to worry, as the red led is actually a full red, no hint of orange or any other color, so dont worry, cameras usually dont get the real color of red, and they make it orange. take my darth maul conversion for example, it shows up as orange in the pic but when lit, its a pure red

That's pretty much like what a red LED looks like in a well lit room... in fact most are washed out a bit when you put them in that situation. JSS's pics are very accurate in the sense of it's not over stating the brightness or giving any overeposed white core.

Assuming he's 21. Anyway, the Royal Blue isn't very "bright", however, it IS blue as hell. That's one of major factors in my decision to get a RB for my first saber. Comparing a 3w Royal Blue and a 3w Green right next to each other...the green devours the blue, BUT, the blue super blue. It's all about you own perception.

I don't think the surrounding glow really matters then if the royal blue is "really blue" because when you use them their really isn't a background for the glow. Pretty much every single one is powerful in it's own way, the regular blue has a baby blue kind of core IMO, the royal blue is truly blue, the red is simply red, amber is pretty much yellow with an orange tint but IMO it seems that it can be orange in one pic and yellow in the next making it hard to tell it's tru color, green is simply green, cyan is simply cyan that outputs a lot o lumens(like the red), red-orange is that rare color that is the red and orange version of blue and violet's indigo, and finally silver is just simply white but offers color discs that when you get it seems exciting but it makes me think that if I were to get it down the road I'd think about how I'll never achieve as good a color as a true LED.

Ambo's pic is pretty good. Corbin's film isn't the best on the Red/Yellows. The Red is kinda pinkish on the outside and a red core. On my Amber even though it looks very yellow in pics and video in person it's a lot more orange. Only the core is the colors of the LED... it's hard to say in words but I believe the Corbin's film looks better with the Blues/Greens.

Well, from what another said Ultra is putting the film inside the stock diffuser of the MR blade. Unless you bought the upgraded blade... then you're stuck with it.

I'm not saying it's bad, I still love Corbin's film, but the look isn't as nice to me.

When I bought it the description said it was a polycarbonate blade, It's not 1/8" thick tho. But which do you mean has the film and MR diffusser? The upgraded 1/8 thick or the 1/16 or both?

ulta is putting the film and the MR diffuser in one blade at the same time. unless you got the 1/8 in. thick blade you will be able to choose beetween the two

no it comes with both in the blade. all you need to do is take out the film when it comes and leave in the stock diffuser. this is all assuming you are NOT getting the upgraded blade

The wiring is the same as the Vader... you don't really need to wait for that. Once it's apart it's just the set of wires to solder for the electronics. What you'd really want is putting it back together now with the holder. It's probably not hard either.

Yup, the wire colors may be different (I don't know with all the silly changes they make) but the left wire is the definately the "hit" wire and the second from the left the negative wire. All else should be the positives.

EDIT: It's no biggie though... the soldering takes a few minutes. It's the reassembly that matters. You can wait.[:p]

Crap, I just found out that the saber I ordered from ultra has an MR blade so it will easily break. He said he makes the best luxeon blades but I don't think the best blades break from a single strike.

Yeah, but I'm going to be pissed if I can't duel with my Ultra saber that I bought from him. What would be the point of having a luxeon converted saber if it can't duel? I would rather get a regular MR if I can't duel with an Ulra saber. I hope he lives up to his word saying he makes the best luxeon sabers, I know it's his opinion and a lot of people say that but his blade better back that up.

But it takes forever for either of them to get a product to my doorstep. I estimate that it would take 2 and a half weeks just to get a blade here from ultra. Although I don't know about tims... Maybe I'll try it. But the reason it would make me mad is that he has a lot of time to work on my saber, it's going to take like a month for it to get to my doorstep so if the blade breaks I'm not going to get a blade for a while.

Hey, what do you guys recommend if I want a red with a white kind of "core", silver with Jstephs filter method for red or just a 3W red LED?

EDIT: Because what I'm going for is the kind of red on Kotor 2 and jtephs meathod looked like it had a white core, also does anybody have a picture of 3W red and corbin's film in darkness?

There is only one way to get a white core, and it's so much work it's unbelievable. All of the pictures that look like they have one are not actually there. Jtsteph's does not look that good in real life from what I've tried. Unless those optics he has are totally different then the tabs are nothing compared to leefilters.

Yes, any camera when "over-exposed" makes the saber look like it has a white core. When a camera sees a bright light source colored or not to keep the entire picture viewable it will make the light white.

Any picture you see with a significant white core is over-exposed and it won't look like that in person. It will be bright but the light will be colored.

You can read about it in Corbin's "Saber Manual (http://www.corbinscomponents.com/manual21.pdf)". It's bloody hard and I don't know of anyone activly making them that way anymore. It also has a tendency to rattle a bit.

You start with a dual-tube design. Say a 1/16" thickness 1" OD outer PolyC blade and a inner one 1/2" OD. You either use Corbin's film or the old-school fishing line on the inner tube. The outer tube can be wet sanded or use an opaque film... whatever floats your boat.

The hard part is making the spacers need to keep the two tubes from rattling seriously. Even then by the nature of the flex in PolyC it tends to make a rattle noise when hit. To finish it off you use a white LED and a donut shaped filter. The dual-tubes help seperate the colors and make the core white.

Nah jk that was pretty funny but to be serious, does it really matter to get a mirror for red lux III? Because to me on some pictures it looks like red with a mirror produces the most noticable flare. The others looked fine tho.

If you want to use the MR blade then yes a mirror is bloddy important. It bulbs horribly without one. Even on the one Ambo has with Corbin's film you can tell it gets more intense at the tip.

Nah, it's just a comment. Not good or bad, but it makes a lot of sense. You don't to mess up your first saber so you bought one from Ultra... it fits with a person that would go to RY. Specially the ones that go to RY for what could be done in hardware designs.

Hmm, well we have some wonderful parting gifts for you xwingband. We have a year supply of small puzzle pieces, 40000 when it all comes together and when you finish it it says "Go Outside". Nah I'm just kidding ya xwingband, you've really helped me to understand a lot about luxeon sabers that I had no idea about. I truly want to thank you for everything you've helped me with. You've even supplied videos so I can better understand the things I'm asking about. You're a great member and asset to this forum and all the noobs like me who post on it. Thank you so much and let the death of this thread begin.
