How many of you have ever owned or seen one of these? I was about 9-10 years old when I got this for Christmas the year Star Wars came out - the first time.

It's a plastic Eveready flashlight that you could get at any store for probably 50 cents or a dollar. They fashioned a plastic pommel cap, and ring that went around the flashlight head and a blade holder with a plastic tube on it. Inside is a green filter. Standard 2.4v flashlight bulb and 2 D cells.

I remember a hilt that had an inflatable "blade" Not sure how old that one was, but it was "for the children"

I am pretty sure the inflatable blade was the official Star Wars branded product that came out. I remember being disappointed that that was all Kenner or whoever made it was putting out at the time. These were way more cool. They had one with a red filter, too.

Hey, I had one of those. As you said was an ever-ready torch with a plastic ring. Not very bright. I eventually had to replace the torch with another one as it broke. Wow that takes me back to the 70's.

I find it odd that it had a green filter even though the sabers in Episodes IV and V were all blue. What's the deal with that? They made Luke's a greenish Cyan-like color in the dvd releases and I've seen production art for Episode III with Anakin using a green saber. There must be some kind of conspiracy...

Well, the current crop of lighted sabers is certainly much more sophisticated and high-tech, but they're still essentially flashlights with translucent tubes attached. ;)

Haha... Yeah, The first saber I had was 1996 Luke ROTJ. My brother had the 1996 Vader.

And we fought & fought & fought.

Same here, had the luke saber. It ended up wedged between the old bunk beds and the heater, it ended up melting the green plastic blade. Good times.

I remember some official sabers that I saw as a kid that had black hilts, did not light up, and the colored blades were fluted on the ends to make an interesting (but not particularly lightsaber-ish) sound when swung through the air.

HOLY CRAP! I'd forgotten about those. When the neighbor kid and I did our 8mm SW attempt, we'd used painted PVC & bicycle grips for sabers. These would've been slightly better....

Same here! Got mine when I was 8 or 9 and I still have it except the blade snapped when I fought my little brother with it. Electronics still work though. Hmm saber idea...

I so remember those. I had the red one. You couldn't duel with then. The blades where too flimsy if I remember correctly. But they were still fun. I also had the flashlight saber. I never would've thought back then that I would be building lightsabers in my 30's.

The Force Beam
Yep, in fact I have one! In my closet since about 1978! In perfect condition except missing the decal that was on the side - must have fallen off a long time ago.

Man! I always wanted one of those when I was a kid. My first saber was the green "The Force" lightsaber from Kenner(still have it), but my friend had the force beam style flashlight saber...it was red and I wanted a light up saber soooo bad. Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

My first lightsabers were pieces of construction paper rolled and taped into tubes. My first officially licensed saber was a gray hilted one I ordered from The Adventurer (LucasArts gaming) magazine in the early nineties. It was from the George Lucas Super Live Adventure Show, which was a stunt/ variety act that aired in Japan, celebrating Lucas' work. the blade had really rigid tubing that probably would have cracked, so I never dueled with it, though the bulb did strobe which gave a really cool flicker effect! Man, if I only knew back then what would be available today, I don't know if I would have believed it!

I remember that. Mine was blue. It was a Christmas present but I got it early. I slept with it nearby. Just in case....

I had the hollow one in green, But I remember mine glowing in the dark. I also remember it stinging like a wiffle ball bat.

I still have my Force Beam- the golf tube is a little crunchy, but serviceable. Mine has three color lenses under the pommel cap in Red, Blue and Green that I could swap out for different colors.

In the pic, L to R: Force Beam, MR, Hyperdyne
