Red leader standing by.

Reposted from another thread:

Yup, the Richie's armor chestbox was $60 for the "kit". As nice as it was cheaper is good too.[:)] I was contemplating making one myself out of wood like a tutorial I saw, but being ABS already It'd save me some trouble in the painting.

I'm really thinking of making my own squares out of acrylic and doing some "fancy stuff" to make the the switches turn on EL sheet behind them. I think even the seasoned costumers would get a kick out of that. It'll be a warm-up for the helmet too. When I go down that road... functional it will have to be.[:D]

Here's the kit I bought:
http://img429.imageshack.us/img429/1327/dsc01410mv1.jpg

Non-repost:
I happened to see this for sale. I think it's a good compromise too on moeny and time spent in. Once I am satisfied with it I'll be ready to move on to some harder stuff.[:)]

I know there are some Rebel Legion people here. Any X-wing pilots by chance?

Yeah, I'll be going for parts like you guys too. Flighsuit, flakvest, code cylinders, hose, ejection straps, etc...

I want to get the "armor" stuff out of the way. I'd go bonkers to get a real APH helmet but I'm thing a richie's armor kit will do. It's enough to get me in the legion.

To be recognized as a character you have to replicate their helmet. I want to do a custom helmet so nope... no brotherhood of the Jedi in that sense.

Since you are doing a custom costume are you adding a lightsaber to it? and are you staying with the orange color flightsuit?

Rancor 5 from AlderaanBase.com reporting in. X-wing, check out the Dewbackwing.com for hints on the costume. Also, here's our costuming resource for the pilot costume. I'm using a Rubies helmet for now. I'm almost done with a Wilco Models helmet kit. It's a bit more solid than the Richies.

You can have a custom helmet and remain "canon". You can't however remain canon with a different color flightsuit. I wouldn't be able to do some events because of that.[:(] Just like the Disney thing with Vader that'd be a bummer.

Erik, I'm already aware of both of those sites. I know Pappy from DBW because I did the RP Board for a while.[:)] Wilco... huh? Can you tell me more about that?

I didn't want to use a Rubies because of it's issues. It runs small too... I have a BIG head so that really never went into my consideration.

Yeah, the adult size is even small which scares me. With all the work to make it solid (probably coat the inside with fiberglass) the lower price isn't worth it if it doesn't fit. I normally wear a XL to XXL in hats depending on the style/material... my head is quite large. The chances of me looking like a bobblehead are high.

Bumpity bump...[:)]

Well, I don't want to look absurb... it'd be like the brotherhood characters using the toy voice changer helmets.[xx(]

I'm thinking of this next: http://www.jedi-academy.com/rebel_pilot_other.html

Paying for a resin version to me doesn't seem worth it. Someday I might grab some machined versions but otherwise that doesn't look bad...

Something else I might do in the meantime of getting all of the major parts is the commpad. I noticed I can easily buy styrene when I get to school... the question is now is vacuum formed or sculpt it? I wonder if I can work vacuum forming into a architecture project.[:D] They use resin... boy the silly things that I learn because of architecture. If I do that route I'm going to look into possibly making some saber type parts (for you all too).[:D]

I've been trying to work on this project too. Are you planning on joining the Rebel Legion? If so you should check out their standards and stuff. Also there are some very nice tutorials on the fabric parts I could link if you want.

As for the helmet, a guy in my RL base has a real flight helmet that he made into a Wedge helmet, and it looks amazing! But if you don't want to spend all that money on the real deal, Richie's kit is good also.

For anyone still needing a helmet I found this, it is the correct vintage flight helemt that was used for the xwing helmet: http://cgi.ebay.com/US-MILITARY-FLIGHT-HELMET-DOUBLE-VISOR_W0QQitemZ270015752417QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3606 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Ooo... I'm going to watch that. Thanks, Do-Clo. I bet some savvy x-winger will find it too though and it'll go through the roof.[:(]

JLo, I was going to post the link to elvistrooper's arm tools in the long post I lost. It was actually really hard to find. It was buried in the Dewback Yahoo group... or the RL one. I can't remember.[:p] It was quite the bummer to hear such great thing and not be able to find them. They are not accessable from his front page.[xx(] I still think the resin ones look even worse than the hardware ones...

Frank needs to get some more of the buckles... I know him from the RP side so I can easily talk to him too. He's also in Jacksonville if need be I'll drive the hour to there and grab one if it means I'm assured one.[:D]

I agree that custom helmets are the way to go... I will have to figure out what I want when I get the helmet. Tape to me is easy and AUTHENTIC. Designs are taped into real world fighter pilots helmets.

Well, it pretty much looks stock... I can see he's taped the grip and added those round things (what are they for? I have no clue). He took off the oragnge tip too. The tape leads me to think he MIGHT have done some electronic upgrades because that blocks access to the batteries, but the description sucks and you can't tell via the pics.

The repaint is decent, but there are some simple things he could have done to make it closer to correct. The spot opposite of the little area that is supposed to be the magazine should be silver. That's where the casings ejected on a real sterling.

If it stays cheap it would be a bad deal. It's certainly above the Hasbro as it is.

You may be able to find PVC blasters that were custom made. There are plenty of tutorials for em, and they look great.
I'm going to keep an eye on that helmet. I e-mailed to see if it's an APH-6B, a bit of fiberglass work and a replacement lens, and you have a sweet helmet. If you have Vac forming skills, you could pull some decent cuts for a helmet too! If anyone is actively persuing this, let me know.

Yeah, meesa don't like how they are private... I agreed with an SL person who said the 501st is too secrative with sources sometimes. To get the best stuff you need to be in the 501st... but to get in you need a costume. Confusing isn't it? Almost forces the people entering to upgrade, or look to be the "crappier" one until they do.

Thanks, but I'm aware of them and they have NO x-wing costume info.

Erik, was Wilco this slow with you? After paying I e-mailed him about when it would get shipped after two weeks (he had prevously said 2 weeks was they're lead time). He said Wendesday (it was a monday) they'd do the vacuum forming and have it out by the weekend. Well I figured if he was banking on it shipping it on Monday (labor day) and he shipped it snail mail it might be two weeks. Well it was getting around my estimate and no kit. It's now three weeks since that previous e-mail.

He just responded to my polite "Where the f*** is it?" email saying it will be shipped tomorrow (five weeks after I paid). If it's not at my doorstep at the end of this week I'm going to send a not so nice e-mail.

Well, helmet kit is supposed to come Wendesday/Thursday.

Also... costume has taken giant leap!!! I grabbed a jumpsit, flak vest, chestbox (not finished, but more so than mine), gloves, flare holder for leg with flares included and strappings. That's pretty much all of it except the boots... for $100!

I'm going to have a totally sweet halloween costume. :D I'm glad I got it too... no sewing and had I hesitated the costume would have been sold. At the exact time the seller PM'ed me that it was mine another posted that he'd PM'd about it. I beat him by minutes. (hate it that I "sniped" against another person, but glad I got it)

So... anyone want a chestbox kit?

Nice! I hope it looks good, for that price.

You must post pics once you have it, of course!

I really want to do this costume, I started collecting parts for it 3 years ago. I find the idea of making the flak vest daunting. The only thing I really have finished is my helmet.

Right now, the So Cal RL Sunrider base is concentrating on an Endor Trooper group costume project, so I'll see if I have the time, and money, after this is done, to get to the X-Wing costume finished before C4.

I'd have a pic that he posted, but he pulled it when it got sold. Only thing I wasn't impressed with was the flightsuit... because it was folded for the pic. The flak vest was really good and the flairs looked like metal or at least painted really well.

I'm going to see if I can dig the pic up in the temporary folders...

EDIT: even though he pulled the pic I was able to use the URL of others to find it an rehost it.

Yup, by an unfinished chestbox I assume he meant it needs to be strapped and a hose... but that's cheap hardware parts. I'm so trying the sucker out when I get it, finished or not.

So where I was stuck at a helmet kit and chestbox kit now I have much less. Hose and chest strapping, arm tools, comm pad, boots and put together the helmet. I'm so stoked... really the tools, pad and helmet aren't need to get into the Rebel Legion at the base requirements.

Erik
09-26-2006, 04:22 PM
No it's not needed to get into the Legion, but you'd feel out of place trooping without them. Even if you have to squeeze into a rubies for a few weeks, it's a good start.
Great Vest! That looks like one that goes to the ESB flightsuit. I'd like to get one of the orange flight jackets.

X-wing, he's slow with the helmets, but it's worth the wait! I assure you. It was 2 months for mine! I bugged him every week, but he's understanding

Well, that's good I certainly didn't bug him that much. I just said in the last e-mail "I'm very concerned about where my kit is." In other words I wasn't that far from the "All right this is f*@)$)*in' ridiculous! %(%)_@*" kind of e-mail.

He said two week leadtime so I was getting ticked that there was no helmet kit in my mail box (I look everyday).

On the other post: Yeah, unless it's shown in reverse there the vest isn't super accurate. It's still awesome materials and sewing. Now I won't have to bug my mom either.

I am going to wait until I have it all pretty much though. Joining without a helmet seems like a travesty. Those and the kit should arrive this week so this will all come together pretty fast. :)

He has been vindecated! Kit came today. :D

It is nice quality. Since I wasn't going to be able to get any real work done with the woodshop hours I spent my studio time starting it. I have the helmet halves together. I'm going to wait for them to really cure before I do anymore... plus this weekend I'm going to bust my butt to get my architecture model done.

From just reading the instructions quickly the visor is really the critical step.

Tip: if you can get it... use Weld-On 16 as opposed to "gap-filling superglue and accelerator" like he says. Yes, I had some but Weld-On literally bonds the styrene. It worked perfectly and in well under an hour I had the two styrene pieces gluing the halves together. I was actually really suprised that the outer strip was perfect... no trimming needed.

Pics will come when it's fully assembled. :)

The "flares" are a bunch of those chromed toilet paper roll holders. I'd actually thought of using those, at one time, when I'd first heard of it. Didn't anyone recognize those?

Not sure what I'm going to use now, once I finally get to that step.

Do you have a paint scheme for the helmet yet?

I have a kit from Richie's and was told to use vinyl electrical tape for masking instead of masking tape, it makes a crisper line, because the paint can't bleed or feather under the tape, like it can with the masking tape.

I used it on my helmet and it worked great. It can also curve, unlike the masking tape, which was important for me to be able to do the curved sections of my paint scheme (I still haven't decided if they are waves, or stylized bird wing edges :P )

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b8/JediLoreen/X-WIng/Helmet-sideview.jpg

I went kinda crazy with the black and silver pin striping tape, but it was fun! The weathering was lots of fun to do, too. :)

Yup, I got the costume stuff in today. They are chromed toilet paper rolls, lol. It could be worse.

The holder for them is awesome. Really well done, and the vest was as expected. It was backwards for the photo, the front is missing the little rolls to make it more accurate but that's no biggie.

I'm going to assume a bit of or all of it's Richie's armor stuff as the chestbox came with the instructions from there.

Edit: I looked up the jumpsuit. It's a military brand... ironically same as the one "Reaper" (Head of RL) has and posted a tutorial for on the RL boards. I figure I'll deal with the collar as is for Halloween and have my mom fix it later. I'll ask her to tackle the little rolls on the flack vest also. :P

It also seems he either made or got the stuff from elsewhere. The chestbox and gloves are Richies, but upon looking back at pics nothing else seems to be. I tried it on... damn spiffy. :D

Erik, would I feel like "the man out" if I didn't have a belt for a blaster or saber?

In my opinion, you shouldn't have a saber if you're not doing Luke, he's the only Jedi X-Wing pilot.

You never seen any other pilots with blasters, which I think it kind of dumb, because we know that in the real world pilots carry a sidearm in case they get shot down. I'd carry one, if you have one. I intend to.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that you don't need arm tools for the Rebel Legion costume standards, unless they just changed that, because you do.

Here are the current standards:

Required Items:

1. Orange flight suit with altered collar
2. Mid Calf Black boots (or suitable substitute)
3. Leg flares
4. Grey ejection harness
5. Grey web belt
6. White flak vest with ribbing
7. Grey chest box with grey hose OR aviation hose and appropriate decoration (buttons, pin stripes etc.)
8. Code cylinders in left shoulder pocket

Formal Items: You must have at least one of the following items to be accepted:

1. X-Wing helmet with Star Wars-style decoration.
2. Mini-Flares on belt and Comm Pad
3. Black gauntlets
4. Leg pockets on coveralls

Check with Corellian Exports to see if he has any Comm Pads, that's where I got mine.

xwingband
09-29-2006, 02:41 PM
Yeah, I must have been in some other world typing that, lol. I think I meant the mini-flares.

Yeah, I kind of felt that without a sidearm the costume does seem empty, but I'll leave that as the last thing since it's not needed.

Erik, I'm having a hardtime visualizing Wilco's directions on where to mount the tracks and it fitting properly. The bottom of the track is supposed to hit the bottom of the "Ram's horn" as a stop... does this mean there is a lot to trim on that lip or will installing the amber visor over the clear one change how that slides?

Yeah, I remember hearing an RL person say that sometimes the fans are perceptive and say "_____ never had a lightsaber?"

A blaster is far into the picture though. I did a quick glance last night and a replica Mauser or airsoft wouldn't be that bad. I also have a Nintendo Zapper I could turn into the Rebel DC-17 like the BBC tutorial.

Xwing, you don't install the amber visor over the clear, you use the pattern he made for the styrene cut out to trim the clear visor to. where he put the 2 drill marks on the pattern are where you'll put the 2 small screws. The clear visor's black tracks ride on the indentation tracks on the 2 black resin parts. You'll also need to trim off the excess resin at the "top" of those so they look like " C " shapes. Those get glued to the outer dome part of the "inner" helmet. Again, Add me to your Yahoo or AIM buddy lists and I'm online most every night to help out.

xwingband
10-01-2006, 11:35 AM
Yeah... I got all that. I'm wondering about the track. There are two indents to line up to on the inner helmet and three of the plugged holes to line up with those two indents...

Logic is telling me that you let a lot of the track hang out of the inner helmet to allow the most to slide out. In simplest terms: does the cutting out of the clear visor to put the amber one drastically change the placement of the amber visor forward?

From other pics it seems to bring the amber visor out and it doesn't rub against any of the styrene. In my dry fits before gluing the tracks it just seemed that the clear visor wouldn't slide well at all. I just want to confirm that my suspition that the amber visor is pulled out when it's put on like that and I'm getting bothered by nothing.

EDIT: I have you no my list but I haven't been on lately and you at the same time. If all goes well I should be out of studio tonight and online.

I wasn't planning on it but I saw a good deal on a resin mauser and grabbed it. One more little touch to it I guess... probably not going to do any of the normal blsters and make my own spin on one.

Getting there. :) I cut out the visor and mounted it. Next is securing the inner helmet.

Any of you think throwing some expanding foam in the gap of the mohawk would be a bad idea? Of course it'll be glued in, but I hate how there is that gaping hole in the back.

It has to sit maybe an inch higher (I tilted it back in the pic) so I'm think of options. Maybe gut a hard-hat for the insides? I'm not leaning torward foam padding as that's hot and doesn't feel comfortable to me.

ooo... hard-hat might be good because I could cannabilize some earcups from ear protectors (is there a name for them that I'm missing?) while I'm at it.

Jedi-Loreen
10-14-2006, 12:37 AM
You can buy just the liner for hard hats at many home improvement stores in the tool section where they sell the hard hats themselves. That's what's in my Fleet Trooper helmet. They used foam in the original helmets in ANH, you can see that in 1 or 2 helmets that fall off the dead Troopers, but I can't imagine using it inside those huge helmets.

It was a bit tricky getting it installed, so that that big helmet sat straight, but it should be easier inside an X-Wing helmet.

My X-Wing helmet has foam in it, but I've never worn it for very long. But now that I've spent hours in my Fleet Trooper costume, seeing how comfortable wearing that big helmet with a helmet liner in it is, I will probably put one in my X-Wing helmet when I finally finish that costume some day.

In my opinion, you shouldn't have a saber if you're not doing Luke, he's the only Jedi X-Wing pilot. Hey J-Lo, isnt Jaina Solo a pilot who wears a lightsaber? What about Zekk? They both wear the orange flight suit uniform with sabers. How about Corran Horn he was a member of Rogue Squadron. He might not have carried a lightsaber then, but thats not to say he never did while wearing an orange flight suit.

Did Corran wear the orange? Or did he do everything in green, because he was Correlian?

xwingband
10-14-2006, 11:26 AM
Firebird asked me this too...

Those characters are EU (from the books) and are not considered cannon by the RL. Cannon is what's seen in the movies nothing else. They only allow sabers based on that we all don't look like Mark Hammil. Usually you have to replicate the saber and helmet though to be a "Luke costume".

You can always do a Corran Horn but you won't be able to do the formal events.

Well, if you do a big event do you want people to wonder who the hell you are? The looks cool factor only goes so far. Plus I think it shouldn't be taken lightly, it'd suck for every pilot to have a saber.

You don't become THE costuming group by being lax.

SilentBob501

I am going to finish up my Jedi gear and see if I can get some mojo werkin' for the local RL but I am also going to start on my TD armor for submittal to the 501st cause I at least know I will have some stuff to do.

While I don't think it is a big deal with the jedi/xwing thang since it has already been done in the books, it is what it is and it can only be changed by the people in the group.

xwing, I am looking forward to seeing how everything turns out. :D

If you want to be and individual... you do a specific character not a generic pilot. There is actually one Jek Porkins... same with Wedge. Those people are "them" for all purposes.

There are not as many as you'd think too. You'd be lucky to get a squadron of 12 to a RL event. Other than the huge ones it doesn't make you blend in when there are three pilots. :P

You must remember that the RL hasn't told you not to have a saber or even blaster. It's just been common tradition, and it makes sense, to limit how many carry sabers. I could and may when I join, but it'll only be the "wacky" informal events.

Bondo'd mine. came out well enough and even gave it a bit of "dented" look in spots...BONUS!! The light green foam, about 1/4 " thick works real well! Sorry, it's a helmet, you're gonna get toasty in it. Could be worse, could be a royal guardsman
But get the ear cups when you can, it gives it a more authentic look! Great Job!

Well, I can sympathize with the brotherhood now at least. I used epoxy putty to fill in the seam after seeing the thread on it in the RL. Bondo made sense but man... I see a new Loctite product and have to try it. I go to Lowe's and always grab a new glue.

I shot few coats of dark grey primer on it tonight. I'm going to wake up bright and early to wet sand and add a few more coats.

That'll be enough to make it presentable for the halloweenie parties. After that I'll get out the acrylic paints and get in my design. :D I have one main signature on the side (a wing, like the DBW logo), the alliance crests in the normal spots and lastly my red pin-striping pattern. I'll gauge then whether I want a clear coat. I don't want a gloss finish, I know that.

Xwing you need to go to Skycraft in Orlando they have miltary surplus headsets with boom microphones which would be perfect for your use. The microphones are a noise canceling type that would work well for you. I used these setups to biuld radio set ups for racing radios, for in car and a pit radio set up. The car harness was cool because you modified the helmet to install the wiring and mircophone, for receive speakers I used a molded ear plug set that fit nicely inside each ear.

RESURECTION...

Gotta finish this before Halloween and so I can entertain a Jedi costume for MegaCon.

Boots... gotta order them.

I'm repainting the helmet. I found some nice vinyl tape to actually tape in the designs like real aviators do. I didn't line it and I'll have to start doing that too. I had it al thought out before for a fan... I'll have to entertain it again because I wanted a microphone to be able to hear.

Only barrier is aside from the bad painted on design before I did the base black TOO WELL. I can't get the paint off in some areas. I had to do some research to find out easy-off takes paint off styrene with no effects, but even after a full can some spots still have it on there.

Lastly, I'm going to have to look up a seamstress. I had planned on having my Mom do it this summer, but heck if she wants to...

My Rebel Legion Base will be doing this costume as a group project. And my Fan Force club wants to start a group project for this in a couple months (some aren't interested in joining the RL), so it looks like I'll be getting a head start on the RL project.

We are looking at making the flight suits from the ground up, instead of modifying coveralls or military flight suits.

Then the flak vests.

xwingband
08-09-2007, 07:35 PM
Oh screw doing the flak vest by scratch... that'd be awful. I'm glad I got a great one in the initial lot of stuff I snagged from someone else.

While more accurate I'm fine with my flightsuit. It's very light weight which is important for my climate. It's a XXL so with how short I am I think a seamstress will be quite able to modify it. The legs go OVER my toes so I think a hem on both legs will result in enough fabric.

It's great that your groups are so active with the projects. My Fan Force is rather impotent... and the RL in Florida is spread out too much.

Jedi-Loreen
08-09-2007, 10:16 PM

Neither is more terribly accurate than the other. The only general requirement other than the correct color is the mods to the neck and arm. So based on workability the second looks better because the military one seems to have a pocket where you'd want to put the arm tools.

Now I'm not a seamstress at all, but I'd think having a blank spot would be better than having to remove or mod the existing pocket.

Helmet reworking:

The old job bothered me after a while... I rushed and didn't do things properly. So I stripped it, refilled the mohawk spots (no more bumps), primer, and a metalic black paint base. The rest will be sprayed on if it's big and many details taped.

I'm happier. I since laid down yellow under the diamond pattern and did the wings on the side in a taped out pattern so it's line work. The back of the mohawk is what I need to next before the insides.
