CD,

I, too, would be interested in all I could find on this topic. I haven't found it yet, but I wish someone out there would compile the directions for making all of the different types of armor, step-by-step. I enjoy the pictures from the conventions, etc., but I would like to have a reference on how to make just about all of the armored individuals in star wars. If you guys know of anything, let me know. I like the clone troopers from ROTS, especially, and I'd actually like to make some tweaked versions of vader's suit (one idea is a cross between vader and samurai armor, another is some special hoth armor for vader, and then a more heavily armored vader suit (more like black storm trooper armor with a cape and vader's helmet) that I would dub war armor.)

Check out the archived threads at the Replica Prop Forum(rpf.invisionzone.com). There are a few on the complete buildup of a stormtrooper. Most are based on buying armor pre-formed but the process will be the same.

I don't think I'll go down the vacuum forming route as it's tough and time consuming. I'll just but mine like 99% of people with trooper armor. Of course this is dreaming as I won't make that kind of money for years. That's way sabers aren't bad. They're cheap compared to other stuff.[:0]

Well, the armor I've had in the back of my mind is in the $1000 range. There is a huge pissing controversy over who has accurate armor but I've heard reviews on quality vs. accuracy and have my ideal pick in mind.

The work is difficult for sure. I read the threads and it's very hard to get the look while having the fit. As a stocky guy a lot of the armor would have to be adjusted.

I am dealing with that on my Vader costume, making things fit right with my large frame and I am on the stocky side also, so I know what you mean. I don't think I would try a trooper myself as it will be a pain to make the armor fit me right.

Exactly, the thread I read on it the guy had to shim the shin armor and he was no where near as large as me. I'd easily be 3" larger than that guys shin. Not to mention chest armor. I wear a 46" suit jacket in normal size because the short 46" doesn't fit my shoulders. It'd be an awful pain to do.[xx(]

Well, that's where you have to know. The mid section with all the buttons. Those are WAY TOO BIG. Also a classic give away to it being sculpted as to opposed to being cast is the lack of the little lift on the left eye. Troopers would say it's an idealized version, it's close but not accurate to what you see on screen.

EDIT: read this http://web.ukonline.co.uk/bingo275/realstormprops.htm

See I am gone from here for a little while and you all start talking about armor [:D]

www.whitearmor.net is a new site just started by alot of the plain white TKs in the 501st. Xwing I believe you are looking for the aa/sds armor, this is made by shepperton design studio or ap armor, both of which is rather expensive not to mention hard to find.

As far as the FX kit, it can fit just about anyone and yes it does come in many pieces but the hardest part is the helmet the rest of the pieces go together rather easy. I think in total it took me 1 1/2 months to get mine where I wanted it.

http://www.whitearmor.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=24 has a BUNCH of links to just about anything you could be looking for. Most of your local 501st garrisons would also have plenty of information on the building of the armor.

If you plan on trooping with the armor I highly recommend the FX armor as it is a little bigger and the bucket can accomidate all the little things that make you comfortable while trooping.

As far as a voice amp unit, you can usually find radio shack ones on ebay that most of the troopers use, but this ends up on the belt and IMHO looks out of place, there is a site www.skullworx.com that sells a unit that has the amp, fans, speakers, battery boxes and switches all in one unit contained in the bucket.

here are some photos:

Yeah, well if your willing to pay for what you get. When i say "Pay" I mean "pay alot" ........ well what im really trying to say is if your willing to pay out about $1,699.99 then i know where to direct you. When i seen the storm trooper costume that was complete with a fan and speakers I was drooling, but when i saw the price i was like the price tag is a stab through the heart! [xx(] . It was sappost to be completely assembled, with a spandex jumpsuit thingy.

Okay i found the link. I am going to post it (hopefully this isnt a bad thing to post links [:(], if it is i will take it down )

The Hasbro Blasters can be made to look really good with some simple mods, I added some resin pieces to mine, the tip, stock, and clip and it made a world of differance.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b252/tazrob/IM002589.jpg

When you are getting the armor you have to think of all the costs beside the armor as well, I bought my armor for 600 but I know I have at least 1400 invested so far in it.

I can't for the life of me remember where those kits come from. Link? or did you make the resin molds yourself?

I was thinking of doing the BBC style stock, but I have desire to scratch build the rest of it. I really want to make the blaster louder, brighter and SO MUCH BETTER, lol.[:D]

I'm planning on luxing it up, amp to the speaker, and maybe a speaker upgrade itself. I'm going to look into getting a real recoil like they have on blowback airsofts.

And I second the links info, I would like to mod my boys clone rifle and when we get moved I want to do one of those EPIII carbines. I think I am going to do PVC and wood.

I figured I'd just leave the barrel closed at the front. Otherwise yes, you might blind a person that way. A Lux with like 6" of tube would be bright![8D] It's only momentary so I'm not too worried about blinding anyone with sidespill, it eliminates the need for heatsinking too as it's only on for less than a second.[:D]

I am going to shortly be working on a set of clone armor and have found a good toy to replicate their handguns, check out the gijoe sigma 6 gun http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0007XIE80.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Shoot, I was there earlier... I just spaced and didn't look hard enough for the place where he sold them.

I certainly want the magazine, tip and endcap. Tazrob, did you buy the scope and cut it to go with the Hasbro? I'd like a "funcional" scope so I'm not sure that's my route. I'd also like the smaller M19 scope look too. I'm iffy on the stock too. I might want to do the one from BBC out of aluminum.

I'm torn on the barrel. I hate how the faux grips are and I'd like for the light to come out all around the barrel. I'm contemplating whether I want to rework the existing plastic and using a TON of Bondo or just cutting it of and making a PVC barrel. I could just recycle the inner tube and buy some t-grips to really make it look better.

Abbreviations... like TCSS is The Custom Saber Shop. It's easier to type out an abbreviation than the full name of the maker. For example AA/SDS is Andrew Ainsworth/Shepperton Design Studios.

TK though is just the designation number, like in the movies.[:p] So Devilstar is just saying he could have bought some stormie armor.[;)]

BTW - Tazrob is the master of peer pressure. I was actually considering not buying the TV, and just getting the armor. All I ever hear is "TK this, TK that" "501st this, 501st that".

On the plus side though, when I do get my armor, Tazrob and I can sit around in our armor at my house and play Battlefront 2 on the big screen. [:p]

Thats IF the guy shows up on Thursday to fix my TV. [xx(]

Bud, while I feel for where your coming from, You just can't do any trooper cheap. My boy want's to be a Trooper (501st ala clone wars cartoon and EPIII) so bad it's painful. He had the little Rubies suit and mask deal last year and enjoyed it but wants armor so bad he can taste it. I know your young but bottom line is it takes years to build up a Kick-Butt costume and it becomes your primary hobby. You can't just say screw it and expect to get armor for a hundred bucks. When you started this thread I really thought you were going to be serious and use it as a place to gather and share info on doing armor. I'm planning on luxing it up, amp to the speaker, and maybe a speaker upgrade itself. I'm going to look into getting a real recoil like they have on blowback airsofts.

Well, I bought TK560's resin parts. I bought the end cap, tip and magazine. I'm going to make a stock (perhaps it will be truely functional) and I think I'm going to cut off the barrel and make a new one. I'll let you all know about the parts as I get them.[:)]

Sure. I'm not going to bother taking a pic of mine as I can just find one of the stock form. They label it as the "Clonetrooper Blaster" even though it's just a repackage of the old Kenner E-11. The more prominent clonetrooper blaster is coming as a NERF type gun later next year (I saw some ComiCon pics).

http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/2765/5cautoimages5chs85416lgxe6.th.jpg (http://img160.imageshack.us/my.php?image=5cautoimages5chs85416lgxe6.jpg)

The reason I want to get rid of the stock barrel is for the cheaper plastic forming they used they're all 90 degrees instead of equal angles around the barrel. Plus I want to have the holes all around so the flash can be seen on more than the side. Rather than bondo the heck out of the stock one I'll just cut it off and throw in the old inner barrel.[:)]

Other than finding or making an amp for the speaker I think the electronics shouldn't be difficult for me at all. I found a kit but it likes 12V and a minimum of 8V... that's a little high and I was hoping to not need more than 7.2V so I could possibly reuse the existing battery compartment with li-ions. I'm soldering up the clear saber and boy is that a pain. So many short wires that need to be soldered.[xx(] I think I can handle any soldering job now.[:p]

Xwing here is a possibilty for a amp: http://store.qkits.com/moreinfo.cfm/fk602
At 7.2 volts you should have about 1 watt output and with the right speaker it should sound good, or check out the other stuff there. I got my Vader voice changer/amp from them and it works great and was easy to assemble.[:D]

edit: Has anyone considered a special ops trooper? I have been doing some study on troopers and the special ops is just plain bad, now this is a trooper I could get into. The 501st recognizes it as a cannon costume and you could get it with it.[8D]

I looked into buying pre-assembled armor last year for halloween but in the end decided I couldn't afford it. If I hadn't started collecting toys and lightsabers so heavily this year I could have bought one by now. :(

Anyway, I was planning on going with gotarmor.com - athough now that I look, he's closed. Dang. He was selling the assembled kits for $800. It looks to me like 333trip is his ebay id.

I want one of these soooo bad.

The assembled kits are done using the cheap velcro that comes in the kit and you have to redo alot of them anyway. 333trip is not the same as got armor when he sells stuff on ebay it is always got*armor. Your clones have the next costume I am doing in it, I was gonna do a vader next but Deviss caught my eye so I guess I am doing a clone commander next [:D]

Costumejunkies sells the kind of pre-assembled armor i want! You have to fork out for it though. It has a "Snap" system, or whatever he called it so the armor wouldnt fall off. Had something being shown on it that was sappost to make it more efficient. Also the Helmet had the speakers and a fan assembled. It comes fully loaded with everything you need. I think if I were to save up every penny for like 5 years i might have enough lol. Well by then i could get a part time job while im going to college [:p] [:o)]

he got in with that suit? not a different one? dang, i'd say, i got a good shot at it then. at least with the garrison im tryin for. they do seem a lil bit more lax in the restrictions, but still have them. i have seen a couple vaders from other states in the star garrison, and one i seen, has 4 inch sole lifts on hos boots, the costume looks real good, but seein the boot lifts that tall, just ruins the look on that guy.

lucky for me, im tall, and i have inside boot lifts, only 5/8 inch tall ones. with all on, im 6'7" to 6' 9" thereabouts. so for me, the outward appearance looks good.

i cant remember how tall are your lifts wolverine? in your pics, they dont look to tall, so your outward appearance still looks great.
i waas thinkin they were around 2 inch ones.

do-clo, so where are ya at now, as far as the vader costume? i know you got alot of this and that parts, just needs finishing up. you just need the bodysuit, mainly now, right?

still no word back from porty on the vents. he asked for my addy again to see if any of the MO's that his cousin recieved were mine. but no reply back.

im tellin ya, if it werent for the fact his stuff is that good, i'd never do business with him at all, all because of this miscommunications crap. it ticks me off.

3 1/2 inch heal, tapering down to a 2 inch front. You don't usually see to the back of the shoe in that outfit, just the front, so if you need a lift, you need to keep the front down. Fortunately for you -you don't need a lift :D

your lifts arent too high the way you have them wolverine. thats what makes your overall look better than most with any lifts at all.

its mostly in the heel. thats where mine is too. but only 5/8 in the heel, and on the inside so it doesnt show.
your setup works well for you wolverine, and looks sharp. if i was shorter, i'd go for a stormtrooper.

last i looked i still got the suit. but did y'all check out the DP classic action modded helmet i pasted above? looks pretty good, still needs a few touches, like the inside set of screens.

BIN for 280. not too bad for a CA DP

Still on the note of the blaster... I've ordered all of the parts. Had to get a charger for the li-ions, but overall it's not bad. I hacked the toy apart... boy was that a pain. I happened to have 1 1/4" PVC around so I've pretty much got it all set. I was glad to see that the electronics are just like the Hasbro sabers.

Spring question stands... anyone have ideas?

I just did some quick work tonight because I'm packing up to go to school. Using spare PolyC and PVC I replaced the inner tube of the barrel. I had planned on using the stock one, but once I got it out and made the PVC barrel it was far too short. Also... it was CONICAL!!! That was a suprise...

Neat thing I did... I put up one of my sabers to the barrel. The PVC actually become see through![:0] Obviously once it's painted that won't be a problem, but I thought that shows you the power of a Luxeon LED.[:D] I think I need a leefilter in the tip hole so I don't blind people.[8D][:o)]

No, it could be any type. I think I found what I want through mcmasters. I was looking at the solenoids they stocked too. Ironically I was looking at my airsoft for ideas on the recoil. I think I'm going to have the solenoid work with a spring to get the same type of recoil.

I soldered most of the amp yesterday. I just need to get the IC in then the input and outputs... all of that good stuff. I'll be a lot better off for working when I move into my studio. (thank god, I finally get my own desk!)

EDIT: To clarify the spring is on the odd shaped hand grip. There are the arms and two u-bars that pivot out. The hand/shoulder thingie has a spring so that you open it up it pops out. There are then little tabs that catch on the top u-bar to hold it in and make it solid.

Love the armor :)

I have yet to delve into building armor, but I've tried my hand at some sterling replicas. I haven't gone the final step to making a blaster yet.

ver 1: pvc tube, metal stock, glock26 airsoft gun base

ver2: 2" aluminum tube, metal stock, g3 airsoft base

ver3: (currently in progress) 1.625" alum. tube, AK47 airsoft base

http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/9656/20060813sterling017ir7.jpg

soon to be ver4: classic asahi airsoft sterling

http://img480.imageshack.us/img480/369/1116dd0.jpg

Obviously, I play airsoft. Once I get past the armor building (probably next years project) I'll finish the blaster to movie specs, and try and get my airsoft buddies to have a starwars theme game.

btw, it all started when I saw the "build your own blaster" instructions someone link above.

Hope I haven't drifted too far off topic, but I'll ty to answer any questions as best I can...

edit: searched on "blaster" and this seemed the most appropriate place to post these, short of starting a new thread.

I've been watching that. If anyone is less inclined to tackle an e-11 that PVC one there is GORGEOUS.

That's what I'm shooting for. Architecture is in full swing again so I'll have to continue my projects when I have time. I already got people to agree that one night were going to watch ANH. I'm bringing the sabers and x-wing helmet when that's done. The E-11 would be great for "BLAST HIM!"[:D]

Ok, so I have a question...

Why do Stormtroopers wear armor, what good does it do? One shot with a blaster and they're dead, whats the deal? It doesnt even help them against rocks, sticks, and bow and arrows. Not to mention it slows their movement and cuts off peripherel vision. It seems that if anything it would completely hinder their affectiveness. Can someone please shed some light on this issue?

Come on. Your being a little picky dude. The armor is the best stuff in the Star Wars relm, if the movie were to show things from the Imperial side they would be pretty much unstoppable ala EPII and EPIII. You can not expect the "good guys to run around and get whipped to snitz all the time so then all of the stormtroopers that boarded the Tantive in the begining were an accurate display but if any hero is shooting at them they have really bad aim and fall like a little girl on a football field

OK the main reason for the armor was to strike fear in the hearts of the empires enemy the following was taken from the starwars data bank:

<font color="navy">The soldiers of the Empire struck with frightening anonymity, their faces completely obscured by unmistakable white armor. While the 18-piece armored shell offers limited protection from blaster fire, it also serves as a weapon of terror.

The bone-white armor fits over a black temperature-control body glove. Built-in helmet comlinks supplemented by belt-mounted hand-held units ensure that stormtroopers are always in touch with their superiors. Standardized utility belts offer ammunition for blaster sidearms, and helpful tools such as grappling hooks and cable. Stormtrooper armor also serves as a limited space suit for protection against hard vacuum. </font id="navy">

The storm trooper was not meant to truely be a "fighting force" so to say but their numbers and the fact that just seeing the armor scared most people of the republic/empire into submission.

That being said here is a good line:

They can't see your face. All they see is their own frailty and uneasiness reflected back at them.
You are cold.
You are merciless.
You display no emotion.

And James, take it easy, I dont think anyone was trying to derail this topic in anyway. I posted my question here because it is the only existing topic dedicated to stormtrooper armor and I figured the people who post in it would have the best answers. Also, Phantom had a valid point, in fact Lucas did fashion the stormtroopers to mirror German shocktroopers. So just relax and let people be heard.

Very quick & easy to make! It's basically a 4" length of 1" dia electrical conduit, a 1" female adaptor, some 1" O-rings, some 1 1/4" O-rings, a little car body filler (to plug the bottom end) and some body repair mesh wrapped around an old CR2032 battery (painted black). The battery/mesh grill fits perfectly inside the tube.

Good for the seller, but who would put in a maximum bid that high when they could have bought it outright for? The idiot isn't you for not grabbing it... it's the whoever that is for bidding like a moron.

ryanlb

I assume they were trying to get it for as low as possible - not knowing that $500 is rediculously low. They should have gone to $450, maybe $475, then when outbid could have BIN.
That's what I would have done, anyway.

haven't heard of that either, why/how would a "Force sensitive" serve as a Stormtrooper???? :?
They would not be "expendable", as how the Empire treated all StormToopers

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Force-sensitive_stormtrooper is the info I find with a search. Looks like the painting has them in standard armor. Also sounds like that's what the shadowtroopers are meant to be (black armor).

Trivia bit: Originally lightsabers were going to be the weapon of choice for nearly everyone in star wars, the early designs of stormtroopers assumed they would use them to, the vestigial remnant of that is the cannister at the back of their belt which was originally going to hold the saber but was redesignated as a thermal detonator.

The story that features the Force-sensitive cloned stormtroopers was published in Star Wars Insider, it's not really fan-fiction. They were created by the Emporer to replce the aging Fet genome troopers. He thought it'd be a good thing to have an army of Dark Jedi...Vader didn't like the idea at all, though.

From haveing read the story, I can say the armor is identical to the ANH stormtrooper armor.

Aahh, I found a reference

Bonus Trooper Info
Force-sensitive clone stormtroopers

Six clones in Imperial stormtrooper armor created for the Empire and trained as Dark Jedi by Sheyvan. Sheyvan was one of the Emperor's many Hands or assassins. These were no Kaminoan clones, but clones of a man named Sa Cuis, a Dark Jedi who had been assigned by Palpatine to assassinate Vader. The Dark Jedi was killed before his clones were fully grown. The clones were later killed along with the assassin, Sheyvan, by Vader when he lead a revolt against Palpatine on Vader's personal shuttle in space.

Yeah iam not looking for canon stuff I was just wondering if there were any differances between the two's armor.

The short answer seems to be "No, but maybe" if you go with the black armor means force sensitive, which is pretty cool.

Personally if you don't mind going outside canon (and why not, a lot of us are building non-canon sabers instead of reproductions right?) I would maybe add maybe a vader-like cape and shoulders to the suit.

This is an offshoot of Wikipedia.com which cannot be taken as a reliable source of information, for anything, as it is open to public entries, and edits.

Fan/canon issues aside (as I have never particularly cared, cool is cool :) So far I have found wikipedia to be as useful as any published encyclopedia. The very nature of it's constant review and revision makes it more up to date, and usually more detailed.

And have you tried to submit or edit? It takes some dedication, they are brutal there! If you don't have your facts lined up and aren't ready to defend them your page won't stay up for very long. Sometimes a span of minutes! True, errors or outright lies can make it in, but then growing up I had an edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica that referred to the Japanese as a savage people so one can never assume that because something is in print makes it free of (sometimes massive) bias.

That being said it should be taken as any source of information, as one source to be verified, I use it as a starting point if I need important information, then taking what I have found there look for other sources for confirmation, additional detail, etc.

Ghostbat
11-18-2007, 09:17 AM
I would gladly and with great glee drop a couple hundred bucks on even a decent kit, but sadly the economy of scale just isn't there. If you are buying a full and complete suit you are buying the time and labor of someone who has spent a LONG time assembling it. Even with a kit the time, tools, and materials it takes cost quite a bit so prices have to be high or nobody would bother selling.

Now if lucas would just realize it's us rabid fans who dress up as stormtroopers, jedi, sith, and the like who keep buying into his increasingly flimsy franchise and make small company licenses a little more friendly so the could afford to make ad sell more openly...

tazrob

Who is rabid lol. All told I probably have around 1500 into my TK. The original Kit ran me 650 but then you include the rest of the stuff you add to the suit, it adds up pretty quick. The vaders on the board and any bobas out there will tell you that is chump change though.

I'm chiming in here because I just bought a completed (assembled) set of FX armor with the bucket, fans, mic, and aerator speakers, and upgraded custom lenses, installed with battery clips, and switches for $600.00 from a another member in our garrison.

He had a couple of very minor scuffs here and there, no biggie, got to try it on, and bam!
fit like a glove, looks great, so I bought it.

Your best deals on the white armor can often be found in your local garrisons -NOT on Ebay.

Once I get my tax check back I'm getting a kit. I was thinking FX but I will need to replace the helmet later due to the giant size. I'm 5'10" 155 lbs so I'm perfect stormie size, but museum replicas is coming out with a new kit in july... they claim it's molded from a real suit, so I may wait. I really want to get started on that but I can't stand the buckets and hand armor on the FX kit, and I still can't decide on on a TK or TD (stormie or sandtrooper)) In the meantime I'm working on my E11 (almost all metal) but it's a slow moving project. Anyway, those of you with the FX kits, is there anything I need to look out for if I go for that one?

DH just get an AP kit you'll be happy with it

Wolverine
05-08-2008, 09:40 PM
They have FX kits out now called "FX Lite" it's the whole suit without the helmet.
Most guys in the Legion are going with AP suits & Helmets, or if they have the FX suit, they're upgrading the helmet with an AP.
You can still grab the Master Replicas Helmet on Ebay, that's where you can usually find FX, and AP suits as well. The MR helmet will have to be modded to be completely accurate though.

Once you buy the kit (whichever you buy) go to www.Whitearmor.net they have forums there to help you get your armor put together, and completed.

OR -You can always contact your local 501st Garrison about an "armor party" if you intend on joining. Members will come to your house and actually help you get it together.

The only other things You will need to buy, unless sold as a package deal with your suit (ask if you don't know) are - a neck seal (Ebay), an undersuit (unitard or Under armor), and boots (caboots.com), The boot sizes are pretty accurate.
Out side of those essentials you will need a holster for your E-11 if you don't already have one.

Good luck & happy trooping, post up some pictures when your done, or while in progress!

This thread has been dormant a bit too long....

I scored an MR ANH Lid for around $90.00, and it was just handed to me by the UPS driver!

MUCH, MUCH, nicer than the FX lids, and noticably smaller, which is what drove me to get a new lid in the first place.
I will post some comparison pics when I have time to snap a few off. http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Recent changes in my TK are the new MR lid, and DO-CLO did my blaster for me, since I have been swamped with Vader repairs, and changes.
He put a laser scope with a tactical display, and a poly barrel interior with a red Lux as the blaster firing light.
He also did the conversion with the kit you can buy on Ebay, and painted it to look like a freshly issued E11 blaster. Pictures still to come.

I'm going to get the Hyperdyne Trooper voice changer, and a pair of RS speakers to put on my belt, then I need a left side holster.
Then it will be complete. http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

lloks good, i got myself a FX kit from whitearmor forums off of Wade. BTW, i see your knee drop plate is under your thigh armor. a helpful tip i found was when rivoting the piece on the shin do it at a slightly outward angle to prevent that from happening.

Yeah, I didnt have time to order the buttons, and Lan, thanks for the tip. Does anyone know where to get replacement parts for an FX kit? My whole arm parts are messed up and I would eventually like to redo them.

I believe there is a guy on whitearmor that sells individual pieces as well as the FX lite kit.
