I used to own a Mace FX but I sold it. This is the first saber I'll be "building" myself. I'll post some pictures when I get it all together. [:)]

I love these topics...

Like watching a kid open Christmas presents.

Hey, my first saber was a xmas present... Anakin MRFX.

Then I found this place and I was like a kid in a candy store! With a Credit Card! [:p]

Congrats! You will love it! Especially when you tell your friends, "...and this one I build myself." I love the look on their faces![:0]

There really is just something magical about the first time you load the batteries in to a hilt you just finished building, hit the switch and WHAM! I'm just a little too scared to build a saber for my first ever saber. I might on my next one though.

Drewbacca

All you need is a drill and soldering iron really. Maybe a hot glue gun to take the rattle out of the guts when you're swinging it around like a maniac.

Seriously, it's ALOT easier than it looks. I'd say the hardest part is doing small custom details. Cutting and polishing/painting an outer sink tube sleeve, adding rivets, crystal chambers (sounds difficult as hell), and other things like that. Buying the MHS stuff from Tim is easy. Open the box, put it together, and you're ready to hack off some Wampa arms.

It really isn't as bad as it seems. The only time people really get tricked up is adding sound or using driver boards. With the battery/switch/resistor/LED setup in a MHS kit there is not a lot to go wrong. Truth is I think that the main reason that LED has jumped out ahead of EL so far has more to do with ease then anything else. I come from an electronics/wiring background so EL wire was never intimidating to me but for the average folks that hardly or never used a solder iron it tended to be a P.I.T.A. Just my random thoughts on the deal, truth is when you build your first saber you will be really proud of it and you will also gain a higher level of respect for these guys thst make these really incredible hilts and push for new design technology.

Personally I prefer USPS Priority. It's faster, it comes with the mail, and I don't hear as many bad things about them.

Just about every box I get from UPS is damaged. (Except for my wife's frequent Mary Kay orders... Go figure.)

My Vader saber from Ebay looked like they opened it and played with it at the distribution center or something. [:(!]

My uncle orders alot of hot rod parts to our house through UPS (his shop is close), so they're "very" good about boxes not being damaged...if you know what I mean. My uncle has the temper of a Rancor.

Congrats! What's that quote? "You've just taken a step into a much larger world."

As for the girlfriend troubles... Sucks to be you. XD
This is why I only date geeks and nerds. You can pack SO much ***ual inuendo into conversaions about lightsabers. ;)

If you're like me, then lightsabers will be like crack. You'll finish this one and have a billion ideas on how to tweak, imrpove and make one better than your first. And, you will. With each one, you'll learn techniques and rules of thumb to help you make something truly bad-ass. :)

Some things you'll learn fast:
1) People at hardware stores can give you the weirdest looks for the simplest things. "Where do you keep thumbscrews?" can lead to a 10-minute "what the hell is a thumbscrew?" conversation.
2) 1.5" chrome tubes can fit in 1.25" PVC (130 psi?) ... I know this defies physics and common sense, but it's true.
3) Do not look right at the LED the first time you turn it on. It will only lead to pain.
4) Do not touch any exposed metal along the circut as you try out the battery. It leads to similar pain.
5) Singing as you build/drill/tap/solder/etc will get odd looks from those around you but makes things a lot more fun.
6) Practice fancy moves in private before you try in front of your friends. Saves you the embarassment of messing up and smacking yourself in the face.

...
1 happeneed, but it was more of a 5-minute conversation.
2 lead to an argument with the Home Depot guy.
3 ... Did that.
4 ... Did that, too.
5 I always do this! I think it helps put my spirit in my weapon. ;)
6 ... Did this one, too.

Well, after making my first LED saber, I blinded half my family by saying "Hey! Look at this!" But I think there's enough crap caked on my glasses that it blocked out all the nasty blinding photons. :P

As for the pain, I was dueling with a friend... in the dark... And smacked him over the head hard enough we had to take five... But I got myself back. Tried to switch to a back-hand style by lightly tossing my saber and... smacks myself in the side of the head hard enough to knock my glasses off. :P

Meh. At the home improvement places, I usually get the ancient rednecks that wouldn't know what a lightaber or a space shuttle even looks like. :P

I'm always tempted to tell people I'm building a bomb, but people around here just have no sense of humor.

The kid starts talking and says "Geez come on, Those girls could have a bomb in there purses and they just walked in the door!" . He gets expelled for the whole year...... Stupid school.......

A kid got expelled for saying "bomb"? Wow, that's dumb. :P

As for the delivery... The last time I ordered from Tim, UPS gave me a scheduled arrive time. THe day comes... and goes. I check the site and there's a delay of a few days. Even though it's in a town 15 minutes away. No biggie, I just wait a week (sent it to my parent's house and I only go home on weekends). Next weekend comes... and goes. I check UPS site. "Error in shipment!" It was sent back and they had to send it to me all over. So, I had to wait over three weeks for my parts. >_<

Tim should have a priority option listed when you go to buy your parts. I'd have paid him an extra $20 to send it quick.

i know all to well the UPS BS! it happens to me every single time i have anything shipped by them SOB'S.

If you email Tim before you finalize the order, he usually will change it to USPS for you. It may cost a bit more, but i get stuff from him in 3 to 5 days, PERIOD!!

Same thing sent UPS. takes WELL over 2 weeks.
ups sucks. thats all there is to it, point blank, and in your face!

The UPS / USPS dilema.

UPS
pros - tracking, insurance, very easy system for shipping
cons - generally charge more, takes forever, damage allot of stuff

USPS
pros - faster, generally cheaper
cons - System sucks..too many prices to easily build into site and pain in the arse shipping software. no tracking or insurance without paying extra. When they lose a package they lose it for about 2 months.

I am sure there are other reasons I am forgetting. I will try and get usps to work as an option as soon as I have the time to devote to it. The main problem is pretty much any box that I would ship is the same to ups but to usps there would be 6 different options for those same size box's. So easy way..I make it charge the highest price, customer recieves package and was charged $12 and the sticker on the box says I paid $4 to ship it = angry customer.

Indeed, the scavenge mode turned into the "get in the damn car and go buy a foot of wire for 19 cents" mode.

So I have completed assembling my very first lightsaber. The wait was excrutiationg, the work was painful...not really. Dropped $20 for a 25w soldering iron, bought a foot of wire for .19 cents that I needed to make the switch wire longer. The hardest part was actually trying to get the lens holder to fit with the emitter...It was making a crunchy noise when I tried to screw it on...so I finessed it a bit and voila.

I'll post some pics after I do some finishing cosmetic touches. It's a tad plain right now, but not for long! [:D]

Yes. Wire's too cheap for you to have to scavenge for it. ;P Bought a big spooly of it at Radio Shack.

For construction, I had the same problems! Took a bit of effort to get the damn lense holder into the emitter, bt once it got in there, it slid in and out pretty easily. And I'm glad it wasn't just me that had a slight crunch when assembling the whole thing. :)
