View Full Version : Lightwhip anyone?

grayven

This is an interest thread for a Lightwhip adaptor. I have been working with Strydur over the past year to create an adaptor that could change any TCSS lightsaber into a lightwhip. Well today the first test samples arrived. I would like to thank Tim for his time and resources that he has put into this project. If you are interested in seeing this item available at TCSS, please let it be known here.

Video to come tonight, stay tuned.

Way cool! Anyway to trim it down so the nipple isn't showing? Or does it have to be that length to accomodate the retention nut?

grayven
11-05-2010, 09:26 PM
I think it could be shorten some if wanted. I wouldn't trim the nipple though I would shorten the stock and re hollow it out some. The nipple is good for helping keep the fiber straight.;)

iamdrake
11-05-2010, 09:28 PM
I change my mind from "would" to "will" I would probably want to find a way to keep the "plug adapter" from being seen... Maybe Tim will design a blade holder that has only an opening large enough for the "whip" to come through.

FenderBender
11-05-2010, 09:28 PM
Oh yeah, no doubt. I was wondering if the back end could be shortened to make the nipple recessed..

Like I said I would buy one for sure probably more.

the sad thing is that is pretty much the same design I was going to use to make my own, I have just been to busy to actually make them :( I already had the derlin and everything.

My only complaint with the one in the video is since the adapter glows like that it takes away visually from the whip part it self, thats part of the reason I was going to use black derlin for mine.

Good job Gravy, now go pop Novastar in the baby maker again lol

I'd definitely buy one if it came as a full setup, whip adapter and optics together or at least the option to purchase optics from the storeJust to help be clear for others... you would not need "optics" (as in a reflector or collimator lens).

If perhaps that Elb31211 is saying he/she would like the FIBER OPTIC CABLE as part of the package... that's certainly a good request.

But no, folks--special optics won't be needed in order to make the / a saber function as a whip. As seen in the video...

Hey, cool... "as seen on Gravy-TV", lol!!!

That is correct Nova, all one needs is the adaptor, Fiber ( I like 10') and the connecter. Pop 1" blade out of lightsaber hilt put whip/adaptor in. ;)

It might be wisest for Tim/TCSS to set it up where you can get the adapter + cable together... makes sense. :)

Plus, if the default cable is (for example) 12' long... as the cable gets "frayed" at the end or wherever... it can be cut down over time.

Plus... for people who wish to have a shorter cable--they can simply cut off to the right length. And I'd assume that anyone who wants a 14' or > length whip is just plain masochistic... :D hahahah

not to mention it probably wouldn't light up as well...

Onli-Won Kanomi
11-10-2010, 09:13 PM
Great idea Novastar...8 and 10 feet are common bullwhip lengths so making the default cable 12' so that people can cut to their preference and trim off ends that fray over time sounds about right...I don't think even 'Erviana Jones' would need more than a 12 foot lightwhip eh? ;)

Name your price... once they're available (agree with the earlier post about the cord included or perhaps a kit made available) I'll buy one for each saber i own, assuming they'll even be in stock!

Many people may not know this, but in the video game for N64 Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, near the end of the game Indy's whip get's electrified and is used for everything from opening doors to defeating the main boss Marduk. This was where my fascination with light-whips began. Thank you George Lucas for all the wonderful characters and devices you've brought to our imagination.

Okay, this turned into a big fiasco. I finally did get cable and the adapter, etc but I messed up and had the adapter machined wrong.
I do have some kits to sell that are going to require a bit of modding on your end so I am selling them for less than cost.
Since these are not a finished product I am going to sell them via a link only. At this time I have 10 kits listed and will add more if I have enough cable left over.

what all needs to be done?

*(sanding the outside)*..

the OD is a bit to big is all? by about how much? (varies?)

something easily chucked up and turned down? or not even that much is needed?

thanks

Strydur
08-10-2011, 09:55 AM
I just used a dremel to quickly sand the corners off the nut shaped housing. And where the fiber cable sits in the bottom of that you would need to wrap it in tape or something to make it stay centered. Other than that it should all work fine.

The only thing that changed for the new blade holders, is the way the heatsink and optics are installed/seated. The blade, and therefore bladeplugs (i.e. lightwhip adapter) should still fit the same.
