OK starting to work out what exactly I can and can't do for an actual lit saber hilt. I know I was here originally to make and get ideas for a non functioning hilt, but I have decided to do another working saber as well.

Here is my basic plan so far. Hopefully Tim can do the custom machining I need to get this made.

http://ousswg.bay.livefilestore.com/y1phGicC97SAlLaWH7CH2qg2yQo_HvlM3ouve2Auq0OUnppoaJ nqXsh1-N8CmZ02HS-mc1xUxXBKeBS_i5fCIm2YUTg9IrJqVDO/Eric%201.jpg?psid=1

I am also working on some non functional hilts that are set up as pure tactile art. Therfore they will have little, if any working electronics in them. Since I will be working on these at the same time, I am going to combine the build log for them with this one.

here is a shot of some inert innards I collected today, as well a a sampling of crystals I purchased to build crystal chambers, for both the inert and active sabers. If you have read the post I made requesting ideas for "Inert Innards" this is the type of things I am looking for. So please, if you can think of any items that would look like they may belong inside of a real light saber, post them here.

In this shot you can see a small black switch. It is a "joystic" from an old cell phone I had. It has a 4 way hat, as well as a press to "click" function. There was a thread talking about a similar switch and controling an RGB led setup with it. My plan for this is to make it be my saber power as well as an RGB "tuner" for blade color. To this end the "click" function is a momentary on, this will control the saber main power as any other momentary switch. then left and right will cycle through the 4 LEDs on the saber I plan to use the 10W RGBA or RGBW. Either way, as you scrol left and right, it will select the individual LEDs and then up and down will adjust a variable brightness. Thus you will be able to fine tune the saber color to just about anything you can imagine. Limited by the resolution of the "dimmer" of course. With a high resolution dimmer, you could get very minimal adjustments, to really fine tune the color. I am not sure how I am going to assemble the circuit, and what hardware I'll end up finding that will fit in the hilt, so this will be a (VERY) long term project.

Here is a link to my skydrive album. I will post many pictures there that I will not embed here, as well as the full size "hires" version of the ones I do post here. If you wish to look around, feel free, you may see something interesting.

You must resize your pics to 800x600 max for the forum. It is said in the rules.

Otherwise, pretty cool.

OK, well yesterday's trip to "electronica" got some good parts, but today's foraging went down the tubes (literally). I went to the plumbing supply shop, and found several good items.

First is this Van de Graaff sphere looking thing. I like the image this conjures, and am hoping to find a way to work this in.

Next we have the beginnings of a very nice crystal mount. These small brass plugs are threaded on the one end, allowing them to be threaded into the center hole of a washer, which will make up a platform in the "Tower of Power" that will become the innards of this inert saber. Furthermore, they are hollow, allowing an LED to be mounted inside or beneath them and thus illuminate the crystal from within. And finally, they have a small o-ring that is seated in the cup, allowing a nice cushion for the quartz point to rest on.

This brings us to my least favorite part about the classic obi-wan saber hilt, the Emitter. the way it was built leaves a lot to be desired, it is just held together by shoving a big bolt up through the center, and threading it into the top half. This leaves the end of the bolt protruding into the emitter cup, and makes it so there is no hole down the center any longer.

Until I can find an acceptable way to fix this I plan to just cover it up. To this end I got a small chrome plug that fits in the spot very nicely, even if it is a bit boring.

http://ousswg.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pg5HNyIxOunjiixu773k-2c3RWvU9LSlwzUNb60W_LOcfHur1VWDnzVX34Z8yww0koNzEA2 m1HpwKVNLI9eWW9ZYf6QS1okWZ/DSC_1434%20-%20small.jpg?psid=1

The second idea I had looks much nicer, as the screen on the top of the aerator implies a bit more "substance" to the emitter. It does however alter the lines of the classic obi-won so I am not sure I want to do that.

If you have a look at some of the blade plugs out there the ariginal Obi emitter bolt didn't look so bad to me. I think This might be a similar hilt that Slothfurnace turned into a LED string blade. His threads are very comprehensive so it's worth looking at.

Otherwise neat parts you got there. Some long stand offs by the look of it. The o-ring cushions sound like a great idea.

Tarragon Rill
09-17-2010, 01:20 AM
Well the Obi hilt is not going to be lit. It is the hilt I am turning into the static piece with all these parts I am puting together. So a blade plug is not even the problem. Just the end of that bolt plugging the hole where a beam-o-light needs to go.

To this end I went to the "goodwill store" today and grabbed a couuple of old cameras. I started the disasemby, and realized "my" camera battery is dead. So I have no pics for a log update today. Not a big losss the cameras were not to interesting, most of the lenses were cheap plastic crap, and the glass ones seem to be just the wrong size. I am not sure how much of the 2 cameras I'll be able to salvage. However, I'll keep them around I guess, for future saber hilts. As I am thinking I may keep at this for years to come. It has grabbed me and will not let go. I have thought of doing this for many years, but never got the drive till I saw some of the stunning sabers being built these days. Now I can't stop thinking about it. Every thing i look at these days i ask myself if there is any way to use it in a saber hilt. I just hope I hve the same drive to do the lit sabers, as they look so nice.

I like your selection of crystals.

I use old hard drive parts for crystal chamber goodies.

I was not sure what I was going to find for a crystal chamber, or what I wanted for a crystal even. So I just got an assortment of shapes and colors. I figure I may do more than 1 crystal in the hilt, or use the rest in later projects.

There is a hippy store near my house that sells all types of crystals (mostly larger ones, though). I bought a 6-pack of quartz crystals that are about 2" long and 1/2" in diameter. That is the max size; some are smaller. It was only $4 per pack.

Here in Las Vegas there is a huge "rock shop", they sell thousands of differnt types of rocks and crystals, in raw and polished forms, and in many shapes and colors. They do tend toward larger items however so the selection of sub 1" items was not as good, but they still had many to choose from. All the items I show average about $1 each. I forget the exact prices now, but ya they were not that expensive. If you want to do a crystal chamber, do not let price sacre you off, it is certainly not an expensive addition.

I am in contact with an electronics shop that may indeed be the gold mine for custom saber innards. The woman I am talking to seems rather helpful and it sounds like they have tons of usless electronic components for sale. It has basically been worked out to a deal like this; she will send a bag of assorted electronic stuff for $15. I am still working with her on the details of what will be available, can we ask for a specific item to be in that bag, or even can we dictate the entire bag contents.

Ill let you know when i get all the details worked out. But as of now this sounds like a gold mine.

As a side note, I have seen it mentioned a few times now about hard drives... What exactly is it in there you are looking for? Just the motor armatures? or is it something else I am not thinking of? as if it is just motor armatures, cd-rom and floppy drives etc. also use similar motors and can be found all over for free. lol look in your existing PC do yo uever use that floppy drive? Tear it open. :p

The computer drives use the disk type armatures like shown in my initial round of electronic items. while the 2 cylindric armatures come from "can" type motors such as in an RC car. or any toy really. Can motors are very common and can be had for free with little or no effort. the only thing is the size. finding the exact size armature to fit your hilt tube may be a bit harder.

The spindle for once looks great.

But like you said... it really takes a lot of bits and peices, some luck and some skills to make it look good.

If that deal your talking about works out, shoot me an email... i know id be interested :D

lol, ya just went and tore one open to see, and yes the spindle was great so I grabbed one. I do not have my calipers here at work to know if it is the right size.... but oh well. if i can work it ill let you know but we destroy HDD by the hundreds here at work. Any part other than the platters are basically free game. The platetrs have to be destroyed however. So I'll ask the guy in charge of destruction if it is ok if i snag all the spindles etc, and then I could send them to people who were interested. Ill keep you posted on the results of "The Great HDD Caper". lol may have hundreds of them soon eneugh. :p

OK I have placed the order for the second saber in this build log. The one pictured in my sig. I hope to soon be posting my progress on this, as well as my "static display" Obi saber I have been showing so far.

Here are the pics of some of the parts salvaged from the cameras I mentioned the other day, as well as some Hard Drive parts I picked up at work this week.

There are some nice armatures from the HDD motors, as well as the spindles themselves. These I am hoping to find a use for as they look interesting. The armatures from the HDD motors look so far like they will be a great addition as a base to the crystal chamber parts I talked about before. The small brass bushings will fit in the center of this armature very nicely, I'll post more pics of this when I work out an attachment method, as for this static display I do not want to just hot glue anything together. I want it to look very clean and nice inside. I'll get back to this later however.

As for hard drives. as i mentioned the other day we destry hard drive by the hundreds at work. i have talked to the destruction officials and they will allow me to take a few of the drives, if anybody would like some. They will not allow me to just take it all however, so ill need to space it out to one or two now and then. just let me know if you would like some.

Also on this note, the people I have been talking to for random electronic bits have a web site, and they seem to be more than willing to sell non funcional electronic bits like vacuume tubes etc.

Here is the reply I have received from them, if any of you are interestd. Just contact them and tell them you are a saber builder, and I sent you to them. They should be more than happy to assist you in finding random junk as well.

"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
I have been speaking with Walter and he advises that first you should
look at our web site for tubes at www.sphere.bc.ca/test/nixies.htnl (wlmailhtml:{76E672C6-45DE-40BE-BAC7-82FF76FC174E}mid://00000002/!x-usc:http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/nixies.htnl). He
says that 9 pin tubes will fit within your case and 7 pin tubes which
are even smaller will also work. If you see something there that looks
suitable we would find you some that might not be working or in great
condition so the price would not be as shown on the site.

He also has some micro mini tubes with wires attached at US$3.00 each
which would possibly be more be interesting.

He has looked at the designs you sent and does say that vacuum tubes are
not actually going to look like the light sabres displayed there, but
they may be interesting nonetheless.

Please let me know what other types of things you are looking for and we
will see what we have available. Thank you.

Yours truly,
Susan

Here is the first rendition of an assembly for the Obi hilt. It is sitting on the Emitter right now just as a way to hold it up for photographing. It will of course slip inside the hilt sections in the end. You can see here an O-ring at the upper end, and the white vanes at the lower end. These are the exact size of the Hilt's ID, so they hold this whole assembly very snug when it is in place. The over all lenght of this so far is about half of the available space in the hilt, so I will still need to fill the rest. To this end I have not made any "permanent" construction here, I have just tacked this Crystal Chamber together for testing.

http://ousswg.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pRToKLZoxPUPlpEE9ZGgmc9gkJkqNojFIbtMqZYWmCSF5ceE tX6M3NQPnokrGlDhc0O5cn3_FLKZw27X5Y9xPd4lhGb-djkSu/DSC_1467%20-%20small.jpg?psid=1

Here you can see the solution to the attachment problem I was talking about previously. Rather than glue the crystal socket to the armature, I slipped it in the central hole, and used some winding wire to wrap it. The wire had a nice lip to rest on creating a very elegant way to attach them.
http://ousswg.bay.livefilestore.com/y1p7dyudHP_CcJVXz32K3aEi4bwEJoveRTfSAIhJ_5ZBkwwPLZ oKaHnmzfHRq8ENXb5Qi-w1FiC898eZA4VpUBEHnP97_Gj16qA/DSC_1450%20-%20small.jpg?psid=1

Here the 440S can motor armature is fitted to the bottom of the "crystal Chamber". I cut the motor shaft just above the rotor where the brushes would have run. I then polished this rotor down about 1/64" so it would slip into the bottom of the Crystal Socket.

As in various Light saber Lore, there were actually up to 3 "Crystals", I have placed a "Krayte Dragon Pearl" as a secondary "Crystal".

If you have not seen these before, it is a good idea to ask your hobby shop, they are great for small projects like this.

OK, my MHS hilt arrive a few hours ago, and as I am sure all of you know the joy of opening that box and seeing your creation for the first time, I do not need to describe that. Once again you all know this, but the craftsmanship was excellent. Even on this hilt that was one big custom machine job, from end to end, it turned out flawless. Well not really but more on that later.

The AV switch here I got as a free sample from a parts supplier, thinking I was going to be buying them for my company.... Oh well, maybe if TCSS is still having a hard time finding AV switches I can give this info to Tim, and he can get them from this supplier, and I will not feel so bad. :P

The blade is green so I really wanted a green lighted AV, but ya it was free so I guess I'll deal with it.

In this next picture you can see the crystal chamber where I had moved the MPP flash clamp up to reveal it.

The 2 small o-rings are to make the MPP clamp fit the hilt, as the MPP flash has a slightly larger OD than the MHS hilts. This is just a bit larger so the clamp can grip something to give it a firm lock in place. This is where the flaw comes in. As Tim and I had no idea what we were doing really, it was sort of a guess and lets see what happens. The grooves for the O-rings were either a hair to big, or too small, depending on how you look at it. The O-rings singly are a bit small for the grooves, so I doubled them up, but now they are a hair too big. It all works, but if I was to remake this hilt, I would make the grooves a hair bigger so the 2 O-rings both fit down in the groove snugly. Keeping them doubled as on this setup however, to make the overall aesthetics more pleasing. As singly these O-rings just looked out of place.

http://ousswg.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pod8DF2Ba7UOabeUxo8DU5bVy_BqdBtcnViI9Qb3VnRRt4d1 d1N4HFsUK4AZRez22Lms_AgZfPEC5ctSdY4ddmtAwpZokueG2/DSC_1487%20-%20small.jpg?psid=1

And here is a size comparison to a Graflex, it is longer by just about 1"

http://ousswg.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pod8DF2Ba7UNJcoJvoN1owq88yJAU9xSs5DooJdxHF53apyd MLmNNhUCWbAkacwz4Jh5f55oDfOQAgCjJy5cehT1ZVRzLJBRE/DSC_1492%20-%20small.jpg?psid=1

As a note on this, the entire hilt from the joint with the choke, to the pomel cap is one piece. it started out as a 7" FF tube, and than all the detailing you see Tim then machined in. All the flutes were custom fit around the switcbox, the O-ring grooves were custom fit for the crystal chamber, and the chamber itself is custom obviosly. It was all done to very exacting sizes to make the crystal chamber the exact size to be hidden by the MPP clamp. The reason for the hilt to be one piece is the length. To have made this basic design with standard pieces, the hilt would hav ended up something like 16" long. I know some out there like the longer hilts, so for them this would be a much easier build. My goal however, was to make it fit in a Graflex size hilt. However having said that, I am now looking at the electronics package..... I am going to have to find a portable black hole to get the 2 Trustfire 18650 batteries in there. Oh well not sure what I will do about this, but as someone pointed out in one of my threads.... The 2 batteries are so long, that when placed end to end, as must be inside the MHS hilts. They will extend into the crystal chamber. Oh well, I will think of something, maybe just have to rethink this design and make a new one. I'll get back to this later.

Unfortunately I am in a mad rush as I am deployed over seas, and have not had time to work on the "Static Display Obi-Won" hilt but I'll get back to these 2 projects in a few months when I return to the states.

As always, more pictures not posted here are on my skydrive site. If interested, follow the link to my Skydrive page in my sig.

I am not sure what clamp you are using, but if using one of the replicas like what used to be sold in the store, it should come with a black plastic shim on the inside of the clamp, on top of that, you should be able to spin the lever to tighten the clamp down over the hilt pieces.

Good job on designing the custom modification from Tim on the DF 7". It is pricey but totally worth it! Tim does awesome work for an affordable price. I like your use of the switch box as well.. good luck!

I have a clamp form an original MPP, and yes it has the plastic shim... However, it does not really fit well, as the clamp has to close so far that it no longer fits the LED bubble strip very well. Thus the sides of the clamp flex inwards and looked funny. I plan to put the "battery meter" in the "clamp" portion instead of, or as well as, the the usual LED bubbles. I have not worked out the details on this yet, but I hope to have it under the LED bubbles, so they act as lenses for the batery meter's bar graph. Unfortunatly the 2 projects are on hold for another 3 mo. or so, until I return to the states and can work on them some more.
