I'm reposting this so the discussion can be continued outside of the "gallery" threads.

Nice, X!! I can't wait to see what you're gonna do 'bout an emitter!
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Well... since I lack the ability to machine I can't do anything. If I had access to a lathe I could add lots of detail to it, but in the end it's staying as a tube. I think it would distract from what it's meant to be all about, the insides.

There are some neat things about it being clear though. In actuallity the hilt is 16" long, but you will hardly notice that fact because of these factors:
1) The 2" we normally lose in the holder... I'm not losing it IT'S CLEAR BABY![8D]
2) The 1" of resonating for the speaker is clear too... so it seems like the speaker is the end, but it isn't.

So it only seems like a 13" hilt. Take out a lot of the "bling" like the crystal and switches that the RGBY needs and it'd be quite small.

DETAILS about what's upcoming:
I have the heatsink, switches and micropucks to get. Acerocket ran into some problems machining my heatsink so the ETA is unknown on that. Switches are on order. I got the same pots Meiv4 recommended and a neat sliding switch. I ordered a sliding switch that is flush, meaning I won't have accidental button pushings.

Construction-wise I have to mount the electronics. The MR board conveniently is 1" so I'm going to make spacer rings with the left over PolyC. Then it's dremeling the holes for the switches, vents for the heatsink, and finally I'm hoping to put nylon set screws in for a lot of the parts. All that has to wait though for when all the parts come.

Ok, there's that word "spacers" again. What are those, and what do they look like? Sorry for being an I.D.10T, but remember, I'm relatively new to this, Post Count notwithstanding![;)]lol

Please, I seek a lesson...

You don't need to see any identification.

xwingband
06-24-2006, 01:02 PM
Well... that's what I'm calling them because that's what they do. In fact they are washers that hold the object in the ID and are held in from knocking around in the tube as the OD of the washer matches the ID of the tube.

I've done that a couple of times already on this one. The steel washers I got match the 1.25" ID of the PolyC and with the threaded rod I clamped down on the battery pack. I also used a nylon washer on the crystal. The crystal fit decent in there by itself so I dremeled out indents so that it fit in the spot I had designated as the "crystal chamber" above the batteries. I then used generous amounts of hotglue because it filled the gaps and is quite good for this application, it has give yet holds it in place well enough.

While shock aborbsion is a good idea like wrapping them in bubblewrap or something else soft like foam, I think making it so that it doesn't move at all is far superior.

How much longer do we have to wait to see it finished? I've been wanting to see it lit up and ready since you posted the concept.

2 Weeks I'd say is a good estimate. Depending on when the heatsink is made... don't worry, I'm the most anxious to get this done without a doubt. The crystal being in there made me giddy.[:)] I have the pots and switches coming. They should arrive somewhere around tuesday. I'll get on ordering the micropucks to drive the LED today.

So it all depends on when that heatsink arrives. I need it to route the wires and to make placement of the switches.

More like I don't want that relativly 'spensive little LED to burn out. That would be another one to buy and oh god... rewiring 6 terminals on that piss-ant sized emitter (It's not in a star form, and the emitter form it is has 6 solder tabs all in like 1/4" of each other).

PolyC can take 250 degrees celsius before it melts so that's not an issue. PolyC is good stuff.[:)] I'm not sure I'd have the heart to duel with it. I have other sabers for that.[;)] This one is the "Ooooo!" saber, even though I'm sure it will hold up well to dueling. I've already given the hilt some whacks to make sure the crystal was in there good.

Here's a quick update:
http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/photoalbum/xwingband/electronics.jpg

The socket cap screws are temporary as I will use set screws, but I wanted to show it clamped in there. I got the switches, but I'm not going to do more work on this as I still have a few parts coming and I got my MHS stuff today.[:)]

Is that not cool or what? I can't wait to have it all in there. Don't worry either I have good stuff to come it's just going to be about another saber.[;)]

Also... naashar, you see what I meant as a spacer? I used the same PolyC that I used for the blade holder and pommel cap to bridge the gap between tubes and hold the MR board.

Beats me... he machines it from raw stock though.

Anyway... the motto that "anything can go wrong will" applies now. I figured that getting a tube of thermal epoxy wouldn't be a big deal... it is. NO computer shops in my area stock it, and it's not like I live in the middle of no where... sigh, it delayed until an order of it comes in. At least I don't have any PolyC to mess around with it's all done I just need the epoxy to mount the LED and start assembling it.[:)]

I was told not to go the epoxy route... instead there is a kind of 2-way thermal tape that computer guys are using. I got some easily - but my K2's aren't here yet. I'm pretty sure Corbin said that's what he used.

I'm going to use ceramic based thermal epoxy. I'd tend to NOT use the tape as I hear the one that he posted last using the green K2 took a fall and got fried because it came loose.

I DO NOT want that to happen as it'd be hell to resolder the six connections and another LED to order (which was not cheap).

Hi all
Looking good Xwing. I look forward to seeing it completed.

It's true, I HAVE been upgrading my clear saber. It won't look terribly different externally, except for the inclusion of some cooling slots near the heatsink. It'll have the same driver as before most likely. I'm replacing the 4 AA batteries with a 7.2V Li-Ion pack and upgrading to a green K2 instead of the red/orange 3 watter I had before. Having rechargeables will mean a recharge port as well.

To quote an old Jedi Master, "There is another"

I'm probably going to have another clear saber done up in the next few months as well. It will have more machined aluminum parts on it, but will retain the clear body to show off a new type of setup I'm hoping will be finished soon.

Oooo... cool. Two weeks for my winter break and this is getting finished. It's just tedious soldering to do. With the exception of the pots it's ready to be slid together.

Now is not very condusive to saber building. I have finals really soon.

Have you thought about using G10 for a heatsink?

They dont heat up much...infact it takes alot to heat them up. alot of the 3.8 mustang guys use them for intake spacers to keep the intake charge cooler as the heat dosent transfer to the upper intake.

xwingband
11-30-2006, 07:21 AM
I already have a heatsink for it. It's few posts up but acerocket machined me a mighty fine one. I think in the long run it's easier to get them machined than find any now. This type of application is too narrow. It was only $15 too.

you should make a clear vader. now that would be interesting. even though the concept of a clear saber is cooler, but now try making a vader a luke or perhaps an obi wan, because i think that its possible to make those on lathes.

xwingband
02-06-2007, 07:43 AM
Yeah, yeah... excuses. I want it to be done well and I'm getting a kick in the pants to finish. If I'm going to MegaCon (90% sure) I want this there to show off. I had a dry run with another RGB... it's various stages of borked at the moment.

A few thing I've changed and learned:

Learned-
Emitters are pain, I don't like 'em
Getting pots in there is going to take longer than the rest of the saber combined.
I wanted vents for the heatsink... not needed. To much work for no benefit.
It was pretty damn long and felt like a broad sword...

Thus Changes-
Going with a Lux III Royal Blue 8)
Screw the Pots...
Screw the vents...
No Pots means I can take 2-3" off and it'll be a nice 12". Still an amazing two hander though since to outside is smooth.

Little tidbits in my changes that will help and still look good. I needed a spacer for stuff. I was using the same PolyC from the holder and set screws... Bah, screw it. I ordered some flexible clear PVC/polyurethane Much easier the friction of the sides will be enough... and it has some give.

xwingband
02-10-2007, 07:23 PM
I'm so frustrated with this right now...

It started out fine, last night I wired it all up... got to my room to charge the saber. I practically pooped a brick when I couldn't find my n-sized plug. I ran to RadioShack in the morning and all was well.

After charging I turn it on... sweet. Lights up, no sound... oh god magic smoke. It's getting hot in there.

I couldn't get the guts out fast enough the speaker and soundboard are fried. Later I find out the LED kicked the bucket too. I had without thinking decided when I was drilling out the holes for my stuff that I wanted to use Tim switch (SPST) vs. a Slide (DPDT).

I absent mindedly figured I'd just "Y" them and it wouldn't matter. WRONG! It created a dead short and fried it all.

I have another board though. I have a K2 LED to use... I just need a resistor. Another trip to the shack.

I'm not going to futz... this thing is getting done tomorrow. I'm going to be at the Shack when they open. To prevent the dead short again, I'm going to use a relay to seperate them.

I'm frustrated because it looked so good... now I pulled it out and I have to resolder stuff. GRRR!!!

I decided to pay for some extra shipping and I'll get a buckpuck to drive this. A resistor is kind of lame... I didn't want to drive to radio shack, again. I'll get constant current and the "y-ing" will work. It'll look nicer, that what I need to tell myself.

This thing has been a pain in the rear. It was pretty when it lit up though. :) to

Whole Saber

I really like the optics. They are the Prolight ones I ordered with my RGB. They are like the high efficiancy ones out there. You can see the diode through it, but no amazing side spill like the collumnators.

What I would like to do: Switch out the blade holder to aluminum. I think the gap of the diode as a prick and then out the emitter will enhance it's look.

Also the board is just floating. The wire is stiff enough and the hilt being plastic I'm not worried though. I found my clear PVC had too much cling when cut and didn't want to slide. My PolyC scraps wouldn't work too well either. I'm going to make a "shelf" and screw the board down anyway. That'll give me room to mount a PLI behind it easily. Since whoever posted the LED holder over the RS momentary I've been itching to try it.

One piece of constructive criticism, well more just my personal opinion, I'd try to eliminate as many of the wires as possible, but that's just me. I look at it as a challenge. It's very hard to do and a very gratifying finished product.

And a tip for taking detailed photos, use a tripod and bright, non-direct lighting with a very small aperture setting and set the ISO to 100. That will make your photos very crisp and clear.

The wire will be nicer when it's on a shelf. Believe me there is no more than half an inch of slack anywhere. I'm not trying to hide that I have wires either. It's practically a celebration of that fact.

The wire will be nicer when it's on a shelf. Believe me there is no more than half an inch of slack anywhere. I'm not trying to hide that I have wires either. It's practically a celebration of that fact.

Well to each their own... Like I said, it's personal opinion. Regardless of my opinion it still looks awesome!

Sorry... The " 'beach setting' (quick exposure)" description didn't instill much in the way of confidence... :? I just wanted to cover all the bases there.

That looks fantastic! Way better than some of the non-working cross-sectioned sabers I've around!

Nice hilt there Xwing. A clear saber is a very difficult beast to do without scratching it when assembling it. Personally, I like the pig-tailed wires. Gives a more unique look. But I must say, something about that saber looks real familiar.

Yeah, it gets those dang micro scratches... oh well, nothing I can do about it.

Yup, I'm using the heatsink you made me. Very spiffy. Total loving overkill but it looks good.

I'll be cutting out the shelf to put the board on tomorrow.

I was wondering about this saber... I remember hearing about it a year ago or so.

SWEET, X...!!

I've been thinking about some kind of transparent + extra greebly LEDs in the hilt ever since BOP I, so I can only wonder if I'll ever do it.

Very cool, only wish we could see it at C4...

I'm glad you like it. I still have to do some little tweaks, but I've been doing that to a lot of my sabers now. Slowly working through my list...

I WISH I could go to C4. I probably would have swung it if it was still in Indiana, but being across the coast made it prohibitively expensive.

Someday I'd like to go to DragonCon and I figure MegaCon will be my one convention at least.

I have no clue what happened but the bugger stopped working... I've charged it and played with it multiple times. Batteries are good, speaker and LED are fine. Danged board just crapped out me.

Whatever... It got scratched to hell removing it so it'll be on to the third PolyC shell. I really had planned on a better board setup so I'm going to re-do it and have it ready for MegaCon again.

Upgrades will probably be:
-Aluminum sleeve for blade holder
-Ultrasound... I figure I'm not going to be messing with pulling it out so the SD card wouldn't be viable on Erv's. I really don't plan on having multiples with the same sounds so this will be my one with it.
-Board in a sinktube craddle so I can hide the wires. More secure... probably the downfall of this current board.
-Recharge port will be moved. It over shadowed the crystal.
-Going to keep existing battery/crystal chassis, but will cover batteries with sinktube. It'll be seamless and that was my original plan to make it look like a powercell anyway.
-Premium speaker... resonation sucked on this saber.

Good part is this is just a lot of components. So it's not like I ruined a $100+ hilt. This is probably one of my cheaper sabers.

Long time never posted. You're saber turned out great! Sorry the board got toasted. It's been so long that I don't know what to do. Good to see you guys.

Yeah... this will go on the back burner. For a bit. It's neat but I've got other ones I'd like to futz with.

Honestly I almost want to hit people that told be to add grips and stuff. Or decorate it... defeats the purpose.

It's the curse of the sabersmith... we fall to dark side as a result of rage toward those who don't "get" our work - and make stupid comments.

My favorite is...
"that's a nice saber - but the hasbro ones have a blade that shoots out!"

I gave him a nice emitter shaped dent in the head! (not really - wanted to though).

Just wait until I actually revive this! I've made the bottom half and soldered up my CF. I just need time. Once I move out and finish finals this will be at the top of my list to work on (besides customer stuff).

I put up a youtube clip.

Basically the battery will be hidden in a brass tube. The CF will be on a nice sled. All the wires will be tucked in neatly on the side. It should look seamless that way. Then I caved on the idea of some decoration... I'm going to have a control box because I figured a good way to help the "no wires" end.

Lastly, I got some aluminum to make a blade holder. So it will be better looking, sturdier and with a CF (V1.2) it will be all the more kick ass.

EDIT: Dang, I just looked at the whole thread... this has been everywhere. I've changed around so much on this then it fried. Bah... If I can still lock this I will. Don't worry if I do I'll start a new thread once I have work done.
