So after seeing demonstrations by the NY Jedi Association and PA Jedi at Wizard-con, I realized that my childhood fantasy of owning my own lightsaber could be made a reality ;).

I was referred to this site and have been studying various tutorials and scouring the web for inspiration. So here are some WIP shots... The design is based on Starkillers first saber.

It's a 1.25" and a 1.5" OD sinktube, a rubber floor mat and a piece of black PVC.(The black rubber part isn't glued down yet so that's why it looks off center). I got a 2010 Hasbro Vader saber from target for $15 that I'm going to use the sound board from. I don't think I'm going to use bunny ears, but I am doing a rubber grip and weathering. Once my paycheck goes through I'm getting all the electronics, blade and holder, switch etc from TCSS.

Cool little saber, but please resize your pics. We are only allowed up to 800 x 600 in size, per this Announcement:

Thanks

Sorry... resized.

It looks like the sound board in the 2010s are too wide to fit in the 1.25" tube so I'm going to look at some other options...

that is a great simple looking saber. very nice.

is that a brass 1.25 sinktube or did you sand it down? Will you be getting the 1.25 sinktube adaptor/emitter or have you devised another way to get the electronics and blade to stay in place?

The emitter is part of the sink tube... I sanded all the chrome off that end. I think I'm going to make my own blade holder, using what pieces I have left over and a lux heatsink. I'm trying to do this on a very small budget... Once I get the led kit and blade, I've spent just over $100. I think once I put the grip on and do some weathering it will be presentable.

great job so far. I really like it.

Thanks! I originally wanted something sleek but the pommel kind of messes that up, and I can't change it. So I'm going to go for a more industrial look... I'm adding more screws and probably going with the old school red button. Here's some more shots, with a smaller middle shroud (I'm not sure which one I like better).

That is a cool saber. I like the shorter shroud. I think you should definatley add the bunny ears. That's just my opinion. Good job.

I don't know what you mean about the 2010 boards being too wide. Go look at the thread, the Obi-Wan is the thinnest soundboard to date.

I have the Vader and according to the video in this thread it's too wide to fit in a 1.25" tube:

Also I really wanted to get the brightest blade for the money, and to do that with the 2010 board I'd need a reed relay, a buck puck and a DPDT momentary switch and bezel. It would be cheaper to buy a Force FX board (I saw one on ebay for $59). For now I'm going to do a Rebel Star/Buck Puck setup and I'll either upgrade when I get more money, or wait a while and build another one with a Force FX board.

actually, I am wrong... it will fit.

After I had heatshrunk the board it wouldn't fit. But uninsulated they will...

I hate to say this, but I like the longer shroud MUCH better (especially if you are going for a functional look). Good job so far ;)

So I'm almost done... I made bunny ears, drilled the hole for the switch, drilled and tapped the hole for the retention screw. I made a pommel insert out of a slotted spoon from IKEA, soldered everything and dry fit electronics and optics. Finally I did some light weathering with sandpaper and glued on the grips with 3M double sided tape and contact cement. All that's left is to glue in the insert, secure the bottom shroud and figure out what to do with the accent LED I got from RS. Everything looks great! I'll post some pics tomorrow once I'm 100% done.

i really like the use and flow of the three different colors

So I finally finished! I couldn't figure out where to put the accent LED so I just attached it to the bottom of the battery holder. The hilt is 11 1/2", blade is 26" long, 1" OD thinwalled trans white from TCSS with 6' of clear gift wrap and I cut 1/16" off of the mirror and sanded with 400 and 600 grit sandpaper. The main LED is a blue rebel with a 1000 mA buckpuck, and 4xAAA NiMH batteries. I'm happy with it... considering I've never used a Dremel or soldering iron before. My goal was to make a passable saber, using only parts from my local hardware store. I think I accomplished that, but my next build will consist of mostly MHS parts with an outer shroud. ;)

looks good! I like the red and blue LED combination.

26" is a super short blade.

I know... I wanted it to be around the same dimensions as my Cheness "Ayame" katana. And you know what they say... It's not about size it's how you use it ;)

Definitely like the shorter shroud better. Bunny ears....I could go either way
