help me decide...

Single saber display, or

http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/LukeSaberDisplay/003.jpg

All three?

I am leaning towards the single, as it's more elegant, and will look cleaner once I cut that extending piece off the middle.

Single for maximum win :D

if you could somehow re-work things to be a 3-piece display..

IMHO thats a 'wrap' with all 3.

but with the current wood/display as you have it mocked.. single.

(maybe mount it exposed/open with sig showing?)

One would be the way to go if you are going to do it.

Were you going for that look, specifically, or were you open to other ideas?

I attached a couple ideas below. I really like the 2nd one, but in place of the pistol would be your epic lightsaber and then the photo framed in the lid so when you open it, it shows right side up. And you could close it and take it for showing whenever you want to. The lid would be solid wood instead of glass. I'm pretty sure that this is how Samuel L. Jackson was presented his choice of saber by George Lucas.

I vote single!

(seth - The last one of your suggestions is called a Shadow box. They've been used for sabers before, go look on FX-S)

I know what it is - we use them all the time in the military. And I'm sure it has been done before. It would be an obvious choice, I would think.

Yup another vote for single from me too, although the 3 would be cool.

Another single vote.
I really like the colours in the wood - reminiscent of Tatooine and of Luke's outfit, without being overwhelming - it's a very nice contrast with the saber.

I say single saber display but I'm not a fan of the wood at all. Maybe a sandbox...lol. But seriously I think you've put so much into it maybe something inspired from the movie. Like how the Tatooine buildings on the set look.

Like a round-cornered rectangle, brick red with the paint chipped off, aluminum underneath?

slothfurnace has his own style, and if you've seen his portfolio, you know he can do magic with wood. I think he should go with his instincts. (Besides, I would feel like an elementary school art teacher giving advice on draftsmanship to Norman Rockwell.)

I'd vote single on this as the Graflex is a stand alone achievement.

And congrats and thanks for making what will be my favorite game ever (I love the KOTOR games still) even better.

Is there any doubt??
I think single has the overwhelming majority of the votes so far.
Make it so!

But seriously, awesome work, awesome saber, awesome that you got Mark's sig, and awesome display. Can't wait to see the final product. This saber is full of WIN!

i believe that the single looks way better ...it gives it the semblece of balance...maybe even putting into some sort of shadowbox for display ...just a thought..

I was thinking similar, but then he told me what he would do to said wood.

Trust in the Sloth ;)

Single all the way. As beautiful as the other hilts are, this piece is true art and has an AMAZING story to go behind it. I know you'll do it justice Sloth!

Single it is, folks...

I decided to take a break from cutting metal and work with something a bit warmer..

http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/LukeSaberDisplay/004.jpg

Here I have spent an evening carefully measuring and cutting out the window for the photo, and recessing the back for the glass and such. I also spent a good deal of time deciding how I want to mount the signature plaque.

I will remove the plastic bit with the signature from the luggage tag, and cut the hole and inset it like the photo above. The corners are radiused at 3/4 inch, and I'll run a router around the edge to radius it at 1/4 inch.

http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/LukeSaberDisplay/005.jpg

Here it is before gluing, I have my edge slots cut with the router for the plaque, I need to cut t he lower rosewood block to allow for the plaque.

Next after that is routing a radius into the outer edge, and a smaller radius into the insets.

I'm in awe, this is really a work of art, kudos sloth, awesome.

A couple questions about your lower tube. I too have a 2-cell and am looking for a 3-cell length extension.

The 1.5 inch capped aluminum tube stock, is that available anywhere to purchase? I've been able to find 1.5 inch aluminum tube, but nothing that is capped.

Also later in this reveal you posted pics of your d-ring but it looks like it's sitting on a Graflex logo. Did you somehow incorporate the original bottom cap into your fabricated tube?

Lastly, what did you need to do if anything to match the finish on the new lower tube to the original upper?
