QUESTIONS/COMMENTS FOR THE BUILDER?

You all are welcome to post compliments to the builders in this thread. Asking questions of them is fine as well. I'll start.

There were quite a few sabers here that really impressed me. Everyone strove to do their best in the contest. A lot of newer guys participated as well which was great. A few that I'd like to point out.

All of my comments are honest. There is constructive criticism in here, guys. Don't read if you can't take some advice. I don't want people getting hurt about these comments, as they are meant to make your builds better in the future. That's what the whole contest was about, after all: honing your skills.

Darth Biff - This was your first build I believe. It turned out pretty good. Those straight lines on the dremel are pretty tough to do. Good work

Jamoup - I haven't seen a lot of builds by you and this one was pretty cool. I think that the shrouds were well matched to the flow of the saber. The sequenced LEDs with the AV switch at top turned out great. How did you affix the bunny ears?

Darth Midian - The PVC build master strikes again! Your PVC hilts are definitely the best around. It's always hard to tell if they really are PVC or not. This one is no different. The triple layering around the emitter is really cool. It adds an entire new dimension of depth to the design.

DJ - Your build are steadily getting better. This hilt is my favorite of yours so far. You definitely like that box4+blinkies on either side setup. It looks good on this hilt. Those grip bars are cool as well. My critique would be to use allen head screws, not phillips, to hold on cosmetic pieces like the grips. It looks snazzier.

Treadingwolf - Great saber man! The weathering on it is very good - my favorite two pieces are the brass overlay and the charring near the emitter. I always like to think that there's some burning going on at the emitter of a saber, and you captured that well. The wood grip was done very well. How is it attached?

Rhyen - This saber really demonstrated some serious machining-fu. That emitter had to take forever and a day to machine. How comfortable is it to hold? Not a lot to say, you know what you are doing in your builds. Good, clean wiring. Where is the charge port?

Mongo - This saber demonstrates how much you can do with 'found' parts. I see hardware stuff, MHS stuff, sinktubes, and even a graflex top. It takes some skill to incorporate that all into one saber. I like how there's that distinct 'backbone' to the saber with the accent LEDs leading up to the crystal chamber and then the bunny ears. It looks pretty cool. My only suggestion is to not have such a long saber.

Chaos - WOW! This is one of my all time favorite builds. Everything turned out very well on it. This is the first saber with a leather grip that I have liked. Your Goodman-styled chassis came out really well. How on earth did you do that pommel? Is it a watch face or something? Same with the blade plug...I have no idea how you made that. Your build, while not large in number, are always great. I still remember that clawed saber you made years ago.

Ryan - Excellent saber! I haven't seen too many hilts from you. This is one of only a handful of good looking curved sabers. It looks really comfortable to hold. It had to take some SERIOUS dremel-fu to get all those windows in the sinktube even. The lower grip section looks great as well. Well done!

Sidd - It's too bad that you already took this saber apart, I like it a lot. It has really clean, smooth lines to it. Great use of that Mace-esq blade holder. The only thing I'd change is adding a bit of black on the lower half of the hilt to help balance it out a bit.

Cannibal - This was the only saber I had to ask the question "is this MHS or custom?" I can't determine a single MHS part on the thing even now, except for a 7" extension or something like that. I feel like the saber needs something to make it 'pop' a bit more. Maybe switch buttons or something. I just feel like it is missing a piece or two.

Xusia - Cool saber man. I like that emitter a lot. Which style did it start as? The hilt looks uber comfy to hold, and that AOF Customs control box works great on it. I still need to use the one that I have. Good usage of a CF IMO.

Timerender - This saber is a really cool one. It really goes back to the original trilogy with that nameplate on it (ala MPP and Graflex stamps) and then the little mini-bunny ears. The pommel is really cool looking as well. How did you make that? What are those patterned grips made from as well? I'd like to see more detail on them, they're awesome.

Aradian Valentine - This one is your first build I believe. It's good for a first attempt. I think that it is a bit 'top heavy'. A flared pommel would help balance it out a bit more. I do like how that Mara grip section looks up top though, I may try that eventually as well.

Darth Quin - This saber looks like it would be a great one to duel with. Very clean lines, nothing obtrusive, and good grip points. A jedi would definitely carry a saber like this. Great work! The only suggestion I have is to weather the saber evenly. The sinktube overlay is weathered nicely, but then the rest of the saber is totally pristine. You gotta beat up those MHS pieces - I know how much it hurts to do it *cringe*

Roy's Blues - I don't really have much to say here. You're a master builder for sure. I like the color you chose for the hilt, it goes away from the standard black and silver mold. The hilt definitely deserves a CF. How were you able to mount two AV switches perpendicular like that?

Obi Dar - I know you said that this one was sort of a rush job and you aren't totally happy with it. I think that it still turned out pretty good though. Those brass bars on the blade holder had to have been a bear to cut evenly like that. I don't have the patience for that kind of work. The framing of the switch+LEDs with the shroud is done very well. The thin little border you leave all around really makes it pop.

Borax - You never fail to disappoint with your hilts. This is what...your third build, and you're taking on the toughest challenge known to a saber - a curved hilt. I like how the blade holder looks with those pointed shroud pieces all coming together. I'd like to see more info on that center black section. It looks like it was really tough to make. Overall, it's not my favorite saber of yours, but it is still REALLY cool looking.

Crystal Chambers - This saber really surprised me. It's you first big build like this and you really pulled it off! That paint job is sick, how did you do it? There are 3 different colors that all transition between each other on that shroud. The shroud was cut really well as well. Clean, even lines. All around great work!

Congrats to the winners. I am not in the least surprised that Chaos won. His work is always upper echelon and he is an OG. Crystal Chambers I have to single you out and say that of all of hte sabers presented, I liked yours best. Simple, elegant and well done. To the rest of you I must say that I was personally excited to see the results here. Everyone did a wonderful job. Borax..that is seriously good stuff. Rhyen, great work man. Timerender another OG..wow! DJ, nice progress (I knew that was yours ;)) I feel like if i don't say something to everyone that you will feel like I didn't like your work..but I did. EVERY person who entered should be proud of their effort and satisfied in the results.

Once again, GOOD JOB!

Congrats to the winners -

The saber that I submitted was actually to test more the ability to run two soundboards together and have them work - the Hasbro 2010 Electronic Lightsaber board and a 20 second recordable greeting card board. The Hasbro is being used to power the three accent LEDs, while the TCSS driver is being used to power the main blade. BTW, the 20 second clip I had on it was of the Marathon Durandal theme, which could be activated by a second momentary switch on the opposite side of the saber.

Unfortunately, this is something that can really only be conveyed through a video.

As for making it pop more, yes I absolutely agree. There were a few things about this build - it was based on a render that Kastor originally posted a LONG time ago. I wanted to see if it could be made using MHS parts. Most of the body work actually went into making the shroud. Unfortunately, because of some problems I had powdercoating it, it came out kinda looking just bleh. And then somewhere along the line, the recording got wiped somehow. And I messed up a little bit on the proportions... anyway, it was a useful build cause it helps to verify a few things that I want to do. This *next* saber will be more like the one that I probably should have built for the contest (if the timing had been better), but I think perhaps it'll translate better once you see it. Anyway that's all I'll say for now.

Again, great builds everyone - We should do this more often (*hint hint*)

Congrats to the winners and everyone else, as well. There's so much great stuff here. Lord Maul's comments pretty much say it all.

In the MHS category, there are so many great sabers, and the competition would have been really stiff if the gods had not chosen Chaos to be their vessel for this one. That is just...wow. It's almost unfair.

I had a really hard time choosing in the Custom category between Sinchant, Captain Nemo Brand Lightning-Saber, Model T2N 1857, and Cutlass Supreme. Ryan, maybe I'm not being fair, but looking at the details, it seems like you put everything into making that cosmetically beautiful, wholly unique hilt, and then just sort of winged the "guts." I also wished you had buffed the brass to a mirror finish, to make it look like a saber that a very vain and proud Sith lord would carry. ;) Borax, I love the wooden grip with the inlay, I love the emitter...but I hate the pommel. It looks like an emitter. The balance is odd. So I gave the nod to TimeRender's steampunk (?) saber. (I'm a sucker for Captain Nemo, and can easily imagine him wielding such a weapon.) Am I right in thinking it has no sound?

Anyway, I hope all the entrants will post more photos, videos, and details in the Gallery.

I can't believe I actually won, so thanks to everyone that voted for my saber. I can honestly say I didn't enter to win but it does feel good to win something, which for me doesn't happen a lot.

As some of you know I don't have a lot of cash so this saber took a while to put together, a part here and a part there. But it finaly came together and I was really happy how it turned out so I entered it just to see if people liked it. And you did.

This was my first chassis and first light up crystal and it just goes to show you don't need alot of fancy tools to make a excellent saber, the only power tools I have are a hand drill and dremel.

I wanted to make a steampunk/Victorian sytle saber for a while. I'm really pleased how it looks.

To answer your questions maul, the pommel insert is from a wrist watch I got on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-STAINLESS-STEEL-CASE-SKELETON-AUTO-MECHANICAL-WATCH-/220611798738?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Wristwatches&hash=item335d7ce6d2#ht_2803wt_913

I just took it apart and glued it in to the pommel. The good thing about it is its self winding. I just shake the saber for a minute and it winds its self up.

Heres a close up:

http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/8057/clockworkt.jpg

As for the emitter plug, its done the same way as the other I've made but instead of aluminium I used brass. I then just drilled holes for three 5/32 pipe brass nipples, these are used for live steam models, like these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230240507500#ht_514wt_1167

I then just glued them in.

I do plan on upgrading the sound board at some point and maybe replacing the guarded switch with a gold anti-vandal. But I'll have to get hold of a better sound board first.

Again thanks for voting for my saber and congrates to everyone that entered, there are some great sabers here.

Edit:

I forgot to add, and be honest, who did you think had built this saber?

Wow, I can't believe I won. There were some awesome sabers and I can tell huge progress in everyones building skills.

Chaos- That is one awesome saber. I can tell you really spent a lot of time and thought building that one.

DJ- It was easy to tell which one was yours and I really like the design. My only problem, and this is just a personal preference, is the accent LEDs were too bright. They took away from the main LED. I always tone mine down a bit so they just add accent and not try to out shine the main LED. But that is just my personal preference. Your skills have increased dramatically over the last year.

Crystal Chambers- Yours was one of my favorites too. I love the paint job and the overlays.

Timerender- You don't know how close I came to voting for yours. I love the old rustic look and all the detailing you put into it.

Roy's Blues- Awesome MHS saber. I love the design.

Sidd - I really liked that saber too. I wish you hadn't taken it apart

To everyone else. ALL of the sabers were awesome and I would have been proud to own ANY of them. Great jobs people. Keep up the awesome work.

I forgot to add, and be honest, who did you think had built this saber?

I was going to go with Acerocket as I knew some of the other people capable of this kind of work weren't entering, and I didn't realise until now you are that good. I stand corrected.

This is outstanding in every way, very very well done.

Some have said what's so great but you won which speaks for itself and the saber carves it's own name.

I'm not going to quote on the others as I don't have too much to say on them.

Rhyen: you're sabers are great and it's very moddest of you to say you didn't expect to win. Honestly it wasn't my fave one of yours but the machining was excellent as usual.

Chaos: I've already stated what I thought of this saber. No more needs to said.

DJ: Everyone knew this was yours it had DJ stamped all over it. And that in itself is my only critisism. It looked too much like moonbeam to me. I would try varying your designs a touch and maybe think of some less obvious design quirks to mark you sabers with. Otherwise great effort.

CC: Talking of design, brilliant saber man. Like chaos, not over cooked and well finished, you really only got pipped by the extras that chaos put into his saber. It was that close, even if it didn't seem it.

PS i would really like that overlay pattern CC!!!

All the other sabers were great, big round of applause to you all.

I had nary a clue who had made any of the sabers. Maybe I just don't pay enough attention.

Invisas, why would master-machinist Acerocket make an MHS saber? ;)

Chaos, the watch pommel blows me away. It actually moves!? It's so tempting to buy that same watch and do the same thing, but what would be the point, now that you've already done it? So innovative, from tip to tail. But I must say, I feel uncomfortable with the word "nip... The word "ni... See? I can't even bring myself to type it. :p

Yes, you certainly have proven that you don't have to spend a lot of money to make a stunning saber. But you do need skill and inspiration.

Thanks for sharing the details.

And I'll QFT the second statement.

Wow!...thanks so much guys! For well....everything! As most of you are aware, this is my first saber finished enough to post since I started here in Oct. I wanted to wait until I was able to showcase my potential and you can be sure that this is just the beginning.

I was really impressed and inspired by so many sweet builds. I have so many questions to ask but I'll wait until the gallery post I think. I'm too excited to read ALL the comments yet but I will right away. Here's just a few comment since I have trouble keeping my big mouth shut..lol

Rhyen - Congrates on a big win! I'm honestly not crazy about the styling but your work is always top notch.

Chaos - A very, very impressive build, and so worthy of first. Most of the work must have went into the chassis by the look of it, but the rest was very smart and well put together. I think you cleaned our clocks on this one..lol

Mongo - The length and the board were a total give away but you've stepped it up big time since X1. Now that I got a CF I'll be onto some custom fonts too.

Timerender - your was by far my personally favourite. I know next to nothing about Capt Nemo, but the weathering and details are amazing. I'd love to know how you did this.

DJ - Blinging for sure! I totally recognized your build. Nice work.

Roy's Blues - Really liked your saber alot and I think it deserved more votes.
funny thing is with the fluted grip and AV switches it reminded me of a fire hydrant...lol

Cannibal - MHS? Couldn't tell at all. Your build looked a little rough but the concept and design was great. I would love to see you go further with this concept.

Treadingwolf - very unique design. I'd also like to get some weathering tip from you and learn more about this build. Looks very pirate/steampunk to me

LDM...Thanks ALOT! This really means so much coming from you.
LM - Thanks for the comment and running the contest. This is actually the first build I've posted, and to answer your question...

First of all I'd like to point out, if you hadn't guessed, I called it Mantis because of the preying mantis type overlay. It wraps around and up over the emitter.

The overlay was designed in illustrator, printed and test fit until ready to cut. I used 2 coats of white primer made for aluminum, and then krylon spray paint to do a white, ivory, and classic grey fade with a light dusting of flat black. I did this when the primer was dried but not cured knowing it would cause a crackled effect for that extreme conditions look. Very unpredictable but worked to my liking in this case. Then I baked it at 300f for 30 mins. I then used really skinny painters tape to mask off the area for the next fade of terracotta, burgundy, and black with a light dusting of navy blue. After scuffing with steel wool, sandpaper and a file, I coated it twice with enamel clear satin finish and baked again for 30 mins at 300f.

The MHS parts underneath were originally media blasted. I thought this would make for an interesting texture to weather, so I sprayed a thin coat of tremclad bronze and gave it a light sanding and then the same for a light dusting of flat black. I coated it twice with enamel clear satin finish and baked again for 30 mins at 300f...long answer. I 'll have to add that to my thread when I post it.

This was actually my second build for the contest as I got inspired and felt the newer design was better. It's my first MR board and I put the sensor in the choke so it reacts VERY well. I wanted to add a LED driver but this thing is SOOO crammed

My camera actual stopped working the day before the contest and I had to borrow one, so the pics could have been much better and will be when I get around to the official gallery post.

I have an empty hilt, a CF on the way and now a store credit (Thanks Tim!) to finish a very ambitious build, but I have others I'll be posting in the meantime. Wow! What a week!!!!:D

Congrats to the winners!!! A lot of very clever workmanship!

Thank you to everyone who voted for my saber... It is actually my brother's saber now (his name is Rick- so it was named for him). I gave it to him because he was the Best Man at my wedding in March.

The limited space I was working with made this saber one of the hardest for me, but i'm very happy with the way it turned out. I'm actually working on a similar saber right now. Stay tuned!

LM- to answer your question, the bunny ears are JB Welded to the sinktube. I just scuffed the surfaces a bit to give a better grip and let it cure overnight. This is actually the 2nd time i've used this method, my "Starkiller" has the same. http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showthread.php?t=8789&highlight=jamoup+starkiller

I think someone asked me that in the forum about the old avatar. I have gotten one comment in the forums regarding my new avatar that I'm aware of but not questioning if it was me.

My step father calls everyone even my mom "by" (not sure how to spell it), which is a Newfoundland version of boy.

wow, that was very fun. I especially liked how I could tell some of the makers by their work.

Aradian Valentine - This one is your first build I believe. It's good for a first attempt. I think that it is a bit 'top heavy'. A flared pommel would help balance it out a bit more. I do like how that Mara grip section looks up top though, I may try that eventually as well.

It is my seventh build actually, I wish my pictures did it justice but, i was in a rush to post them. It is a very small saber I feel the upper body gives it substance, thank you for the critique however. If you want to see the mara grip in another saber of mine check out Deceit. http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/yy90/AradianValentine/IMG_1521-1.jpg

CC, I am so thrilled to hear that you liked mine the best, since I voted for yours as well. I couldn't get over that amazing paint job.
I drew the brass nameplate out of paper a few times to get the font right, then drew it by hand on the brass plate in sharpie marker. The ink acts as an acid resist. Then the plate got a bath in ferric chloride (pcb etchant for those of you who make their own circuit boards) to etch away the brass surrounding the letters. I washed the sharpie away with alchohol and then gave the whole thing a quick rubdown in birchwood casey brass black. After darkening the whole nameplate I gave it a rough polish to bring out the letters. The photos are strange, some of them actually make the letters look darker than the plate. In person it is the other way around. As for the rest of the hilt, I made it out of a broken antique brass telescope, a brass knob from an antique bench plane, some old brass model train doodads, a fancy antique brass button, a brass rotary lamp switch, a cupboard door knob, and some decorative wood edging. Some of the antique finish is original, but I had to polish and then re-finish the section with the switch and glass eye. I tried to use as many antique parts as possible in this build to help preserve that old victorian feel. And Matt, originally it was going to have sound. I used just enough LEDs in the blade to replicate the mA of a luxeon, but for some reason the US2.5 was running very hot, so I opted to keep the makoto blade and sacrifice the sound. No big loss in my mind.

Crystal Chambers
05-26-2010, 10:34 AM
Awesome...glad to hear. The US2.5 seems to have trouble with more then 4.8v I believe. I had the same issue using 6V Basically I think it can handle 1V above the LED requirement.

I thought you may have done even more weathering. It appeared to me that it may have been done with aluminum black, maybe brass, and even some trans PC. One thing was for sure and that that you used some antiques and other appropriated decorative items which it itself is quite impressive. Beautiful Saber! Thanks for sharing that with us.

Funny that the two 2nd place winners voted for each other..lol

Wow..so much to learn from each other and so much inspiration. I was supposed to be asleep 3 hours ago...lol

You have perhaps the most recognizable style of all the builders! I saw your handiwork a mile away.

Wow! To everyone that entered, you guys are awesome. There were so many impressive builds in both catigories ! Crystal chambers, yours was by far my fav. The second I saw it knew where my vote was going. The cut outs and sharp angles drew me right and then the paint job blew me away. (When my wife saw it she wished she had an account so she could vote for it too lol). Can't wait to see the thread post on that baby.

Thanks to all who complimented my meager entry and to all who wasted their votes on mine :) j/k. Thanks so much. I will leave some better feedback for all when I can home, as typing on the qwerty phonewould take forever. Be back later .

Everyone did an outstanding job. All the sabers looked really great. I'm proud to say that I was able to participate in this event. My oldest son is excited to because it's his saber.

anyway as i was saying. this contest was awesome. i was so happy to be a part of. and guys thanks alot for all your criticsm. yeah it did have DJ stamped on it. lol... ;) this saber deffinately tested my skills thats for sure. LM, wade, LDM, and everyone else thanks alot.

Wade: i agree the LEDs are super bright but for some reason that i cant explain i like em that way. i dunno

LM. yeah i dont like the phillips head screws to. i couldnt find brass button head locally and ATM i didnt want to put in an entire order into TCSS just for screws :P

invisias: yeah it was moonbeam themed. im fond of it but trust me i will deffinately do alot of things differently. im always up for trying new style and stuff. its what makes this hobby so awesome.

so thanks everybody... this was so much fun and im excited to see what is in store for us next year. (saber wise i mean)

everybodies saber was awesome i loved all the variation and build style. wade i have to say yours was my favorite of them all. i am just so in love with that hilt you have no idea. i want one of those just as bad as a radiosity from JQ..

chaos. man i just love that pommel insert so brilliant...

well i back to workin on my latest saber!

LOL, Jango, DJ, Rhyen, Obi-Dar and Chaos were all obvious. ;)

Really? Hmmm... I used a different background to photograph on, since I thought my white freezer top would be recognized. I'm curious about what made mine recognizable.

Congratulations to the winners, but everyone should be proud of their efforts. You all did a great job. I love how a contest brings out everyone's best.

Thanks for the compliments on mine. Wait until you see the one I was planning to submit.;)

SABERBUILDING CONTEST ENTRANT KEY

Ryan - Excellent saber! I haven't seen too many hilts from you. This is one of only a handful of good looking curved sabers. It looks really comfortable to hold. It had to take some SERIOUS dremel-fu to get all those windows in the sinktube even. The lower grip section looks great as well. Well done!

ok where is the constructive criticism part:confused::D:D

to be honest the skill was More CAD and decision-fu
this monster took more time to design and decide what i wanted in the saber
it's always been on my mind but making it work was the challenge
BTW I am working on it's "jedi" counterpart,

to elaborate a bit, the brass tube is pretty straight forward ,it's been done here many times and in many cases much more elaborate than my Sinchant entry
which is derived the name combination of Sin + Enchant,
my vision for this concept was 1800's dueling pistols which was sort of lost in the end design

one of the most difficult aspects was creating the handle and pommel trim and accessories, and trust me from this experience; resonance chambers do not work for this design they MUST be tubular!( well at least that's what I gather from studying Bose designs and comparing and playing with the sound layout

i couldn't find a suitable "working" layout for the speaker
so the sound is there but just not loud enough!
The contest was fun

Chaos-
your saber is Really Cool
I thought the timepiece was out of this world!

Ryan, maybe I'm not being fair, but looking at the details, it seems like you put everything into making that cosmetically beautiful, wholly unique hilt, and then just sort of winged the "guts." I also wished you had buffed the brass to a mirror finish, to make it look like a saber that a very vain and proud Sith lord would carry. ;)
Anyway, I hope all the entrants will post more photos, videos, and details in the Gallery.
completely fair....
on my next attempt
Chassis

your right, I went all out on cosmetics,
the only way to get a completely working hilts is well , from the inside -out

not the other way around

I started to polish the pommel but aww thats alot of tedious work especially with all the small detail but I am looking to improve this build a little.so perhaps I'll do that

beside that I gotta admit it's my first LED saber
Thanks for the comments
!! I really appreciate it!

This contest was alot of fun to take part in, i am glad i was able to be part of it. Everyone of you that entered did some fantastic work, seriously. :)

LM I used oned of these to fasten the wooden handle to a machined piece on the hilt.

LDM, how could you tell it was mine? I mean I used a different crappy camera than usual. LOL

DJ, If you like super bright accent LEDs then that is all that matters. Like everything else in this hobby it is personal preference. Thanks for the compliments on Redemptor, it started off with the grip being a test part for making some tooling and then I got carried away. LOL

LM - it would be nice to have thumbnail pics next to the names.Going between this and 3 other posts is not very convenient.

Obi-Dar - I really liked what you did with your emitter. It had me scratching me head. It's an odd "coincidence" that poll 2 was all Canadian....lol

Thanks Borax. I really like the uniqueness of yours and its reference to earth history. I'm glad you both like my saber and thanks for the vote!. I can't wait to post it in more detail. My photos aren't as good as I would have liked and I have a few other surprises I've yet to reveal.

I remember you asking a certain sabersmith about the brass bar and I kinda know your aesthetic really well (especially your brasswork, which you know I love!) also...I seem to remember owning a weathered saber that you did...hmmm wonder which one that was....;)

I thought all of the entries were good. Congrats to the winners:D
As for me, this was actually the first saber I've ever posted. I
was happy to finally post a saber up and it was cool that it was for the contest.
I was just happy to fit 4 18650's in a 11 7/8" hilt with a 10watt led and a Crystal Focus.:cool::cool::cool:
I will post a poor man's build log later.

Again to everyone that entered you all did an amazing job putting these sabers together.

Timerender - that saber was truly eye candy. and to hear that you made it out of mostly antique parts was even cooler. the name plate and red jewel really make that saber pop. shows great imagination on your part.

Ryan S - great saber dude. was nice to see a "sword" style hilt, since that what mine was originally supposed to be as well. i think you did a super job cutting everything up and getting it to come together. and maybe its just me but the bottom side of the blade holder totally looks like a manta ray which was pleasing to the eye. I really liked this one. hence it got my vote :)

Chaos - Not much can be added to what has already been said about that build. Its is so clean from start to finish. the way you made the inside flow was awesome. With a very creative and simple way of showing off the crystal section. I truly look forward to seeing more sabers from you in the future.

Treadingwolf - Your saber was awesome! the 'old', antique feeling it had was really cool. So cool to look at. my only hag up was that wood part kinda reminds me of an off the shelf replacement table leg. but even with that, it was hard not to vote for yours. seriously cool saber.

Rhyen - That my friend is a very lordly looking saber. I thought like 'kings scepter' when i first saw it. And just thinking of the time and ingenuity to lathe that up is crazy. though i agree it looks a little rough to handle on the palm i would think. You truly deserve the win on this one :)

As for my build, I feel that I shorted myself in that I was so focused on finishing a saber for a friend I never worked on mine. That saber was build from scratch, start to finish in 7 days. lol There were a lot of nights after work staying up till 2 am. And Matt thank you for calling attention to the pommel end. it does looke exactly like a blade emitter. It was not supposed to look that way at all, but in a zero hour blunder while making a cut on the true pommel piece I cut the main body right in half on accident ( 1 am and very sleepy) so i had to slap what is there now together just in time to get the pics posted. :) 11:15 pm day of deadline I think is when I got it to LM.

No worries though. I am just glad i got to enter and show it off. I will be tearing this one down a bit and getting it to my original sketch and then posting it in the gallery as soon as I can. Thanks to all for the warm comments on my meager attempt :)

Greetings all,

Congratulations to the winners all. This was a great experience, thanks to LM and Tim for conducting and sponsoring this event. I have to say, it's nice having a hobby with such a good and supportive community about it. :-D

And now, I know how high the bar is set for next year. ;)

Mostly it showed my unbelievable luck. The day that the contest was announced I was browsing Ebay and spotted that scope, which was lucky to start with. I search Ebay, Craigslist, and all the local antique stores religiously and have never before nor since found anything as perfectly suited for a lightsaber hilt as that scope. The scope was broken, which was another stroke of luck because otherwise it would have been WELL outside of the reasonable price range for a saber. Many of the details were found purely on accident or as a last resort when other plans failed to work out. But those "last resorts" were also serendipitously lucky because I feel the end result was far better than it would have been if everything had gone according to plan.
