View Full Version : Using Your FX: Hows it handle?

With all the recent discussion on lightsaber usage etc. I was wondering something. I am considering getting a Maul conversion from Ultra(when he gets back to answering his mail, I know hes busy) and was wondering what your thoughts are on its handling. How big is the hilt in comparison to others girth wise? Do the buttons irratate you? Anybody with martial arts experience handle one?

X-Wing just a thought but you and Tim might consider a new forum or maybe a sticky topic for us to rank how the sabers hold up to actual use and what we prefer when its comes to handling and dueling.

Just a thought...

I think Tim is waiting to do a conversion kit for it. If he offered I'd take him up on it though and just do the mod with the parts when they came out myself.

I will mod the title!

Great questions man.

The only problem I see is that the whole issue is so personal and VERY subjective. When I build a saber for straight up slam dualing I mount the switch in the butt as shown very beautifully by JediSaberSmith. I also use 20 guage sink pipes instead of 22 guage for that added strength. I know that there has been a huge debate on blade length and I am sure that everyone here knows that I like 36 inches and Zhi-don likes 40. and so on and so on...

I do really like the ribbed section for a dualing saber and have done a few MHS hilts now. I would love to really try to do something a little fancier but I always seem to end up with the basic battle hilts.

Oh and about the main question. It's Mauls saberstaff Ultra style, is there really any reason NOT to get it?[}:)][;)]

He doesn't have a "Kit" but I think he will convert it using the stock parts. ie. he'll replace just the LED's and the blade.

But you'll have to ask him.

(Didn't he give a converted DM for the Advertising contest?)

And I'm not trying to steer business away from Ultra, I hear he does Excellent work, I'm just pointing out that Tim does it too. Since it is his forum.

As far as size, I think it's the best fx to date compared to the actual saber. The great thing about maul's saber is there are no thin parts. It's pretty much a long tube with stuff added on to it. The only problem is, like you said, the buttons.

If you don't plan to do any cosmetic alterations to it, invest in some gloves. A fellow poster (NYJedi) has "field tested" it, so to speak, and he found that the knobs and such tore up his hands.

Other than that, do as you will. I duel with the 05 Anakin, and it tends to "bite" ya if you get really spirited. I had to invest in gloves, as I didn't want to mar it. However, I'm thinking of doing a convert where the control box is removed; that should cut down on my hands needing the Palmolive treatment! ("Your soaking in it!")

You don't need to see any identification.

I played with it for about 20 minutes in San Diego at that Fan Force's Anniversary party. It's heavy. A lot heavier than I thought it would be. The shorter blades make manuvering it easier than with the Park's version. The switches are cool because you can't shut it off accidentally. You need two end caps to make 2 sabers, so it isn't as easy to convert it during combat. The sounds are pretty nice, maybe a bit louder than the other MR's. I'm not sure that I would like to fight with it for any length of time because of the weight. A strong guy wouldn't have any problem with it. Of course it's a Dark side weapon, most of the Jedi train using one, but do not use one for thier everyday weapon. Neither do they use two sabers, although we know they are trained to ala Anakin. The Jedi standard is a single Lightsaber. At least in my era.

About gloves.. I found that my MMA(mixed martial arts) gloves have pretty good padding in both the palm and the top of the hand. I used to do alot of bokken sparring and I know how often the top of the hand gets whacked.

Yeah I was thinking the buttons might be a pain. How long is a single hilt? I forget the measurements right off, I just like to have plenty of room for my hands. I am mainly wanting to do exhibitions at cons etc. in which I'd prolly be using the double...but for personal prolly would go single alot.

Edit: Hey lets keep this going I want to hear about the Vaders, the Maces, the Luke ROTJ!

Hilt is pretty long. As it's supposed to be pretty screen acurate. Glove...I wouldn't duel without 'em. I like my hands and fingers. I use military grade leather. Ravenswood leather makes good cow and deerhide gloves. I recommend them. You don't want too padded gloves as they make you lose your 'feel' for the blade. You also don't want thin cloth ones. OUCH!

Yes good topic.

All I have right now is an anakin 05 and I've been practicing with it every day lately to unwind after work.

I love it's look and the sounds are great but that darn swithchbox makes handling it very awkward sometimes. As far as balance goes with the anakin maybe the blade could be longer.

I've heard that the luke has good balance.

Does anyone have a dooku style hilt that they practice with? I'd love to build one with that style hilt for dueling.

Hitogiri

I have an Anakin and hate the control box. Also the t grips I think are kind of a pain. I have small hands but I can get my hand around them. But still I don't feel I have very good leverage.

The gloves I have don't make you lose feel of the blade at all, the padding is enough to protect the palm and knuckles. (they are the ones you don't want to get punched with lol) I let my friend whack my hand a few times while wearing them, lightly at 1st to semi hard and didn't feel a thing.

http://combatsports.com/detail.aspx?ID=22382

I am going to look for some similar gloves for costume use if I can find it. I like to have my fingers free for movement.

Since the thread title changed; I guess that I can complain about my Vaders here, right?

It handles great, better than my Ani, but the grips are starting to peel. I always thought that they were rubber, but it turns out that they are hard plastic with a rubber coating. [:(]

I ended up peeling off the rubber from a couple of the grips, and one of the red wheels. Looks alot better now, not like a shedding snake anymore. [:p]

I have more problems with the Vader FX then the Anakin FX. I choke up pretty high on the hilt so I rub the Anakin "clamp" every now and then but it is not really an issue. With the shroud and the screws on the vader I never get a hold that is just perfect without getting bit by the "clamp". I had a little problem with the Anakin AOTC EL saber too but that's not really relevent to the major batch of FX's that we all tend to play with.

Oh yeah! Mace Windu's hilt is awsome except for the on/off switch. I keep sliding that dang switch every time I get the hold I like best on it. If you tend to grip from mid to low like Mr. Jackson did then the thing is incredible and really nicely balanced but if your like me and want to choke the emitter area then you may want to consider other options or a mod to latch the switch on. I have been thinking about doing that to one of the Maces I have.

The Mace looks like it would be a good grip.

I tend to hold my Anakin around the emitter end too. I use the bottom grip for two hand action.

How's the Ultra 5 watt stunt handle I wonder. That's the next saber I want to buy. Along with a Vader at some point...can't be a star wars fan and not have a vader lightsaber.

Does the anakin switch box really get in the way that much? I thought that having a switch would be a really really good thing so I would accidently turn it off during battle but how much trouble has it really caused you and does it apply for all boxes or just the anakin?

naashar
08-10-2006, 09:57 AM
Well, to be fair..with consistent use, the Anakin has proven to be less of a problem for me. You just get used to the placement of the switch box and adjust your 1 and 2-handed grips accordingly. I don't even need gloves any more for practice![8D]

Just one of those things, I guess...

I have personally handled all the MR sabers and here are my comments:

Vader....don't like the sound, control box gets in the way.
Maul.....don't like the sound, although it's louder than the Vader. Buttons are cool, weight is a bit excessive.
Anakin...sound is good, control box gets in the way.
Luke.....ditto.
Obi-wan..ditto, I do like the big emitter, gotta get one for my personal saber.
Mace.....sound is good, slide-switch is in bad place for me too.

Interesting point: At COMICON, Alex[ULtra] dropped by with a converted Mace. To demonstrate the almost indistructabliliy of the blade, I had someone whack it against the chrome guard rail pretty hard. No damage to the blade, but the switch cover popped off.

How do they handle? Well, the steering's a little tight. The shifter sticks occasionally, it'll grind if you're not careful. They're also a little sluggish off the start, and around corners. The braking distance is longer than a Hummer 1. But it gets decent gas mileage. Even comes with a gimmick horn.

Hmm, I've considered getting luke, anikan, and mace hilts but I can't decide which one and which color (It's between green red and blue). One deciding factor is that I really need to hear them and figure out what all the sounds are like. In the handling department I'm okay with all three now and I really like the switch funtion on all three. My favorite part on the anikan is the emitter, on the mace is the how the switch doesn't get in the way, and the luke has very balanced and basic style and maul says that it doesn't ever get in the way. Anybody have some advice on any of my issues?

Buy parts from here, and make your own. Ask X-wing how to install an "RGB" set up. That way, you can have the best of all worlds, and have something to call your Own.

But the RGB one only has 1W on each color and I'm not making a custom one for my first saber, unless I can suddenly come up with some extra cash so I can get what I want. I'm getting an MR converted Lux because it offers the slight power up and down effect, is pre-assembled, and has a sound module. I don't mean to disrespect TCSS I just can't order a custom one right now, but on my next saber I definitely will.

the mace switch gets in the way for almost everyone. i tried one out at sharper image and i turned it off every 5 seconds. beetween the luke and anikan hilts, get the luke. it is perfectly balance and i havn't ever accidently turned it off when playing. with the anikan i turn it off consistantly

I myself prefer luke, and the maul is so much fun to handle

here are some specs on them.

Luke::
- Very easy to handle
- Doesnt Irritate hands

Vader::
- Hard to handle ( Grip is too big)
- Too bulky

Anakin::
- Same as vader
- A little easier to handle than vader

Obi::
- Very Fun to handle
- Extremely easy to handle

Maul::
- Easy to handle ( if you know how to use a double)
- Fun to spin around
- Great Durability
- Aluminum hilt scratches so easily

Mace::
- Easy to handle
- Button not to comfortable (at least not for me)

The only problem with my Ultra-converted Anakin is the fact that I cracked the stock plastic blade holder with a few good whacks. Well, there's also the fact that my "blade restraining bolt" hole wasn't tapped properly, but I'll be sending it off to someone to get it fixed soon.

Also, when you get your stuff modded, make sure to check the alignment of your LED. Mine is slightly off center.

Just to settle the sound issue on the MR FX's

The Maul and Vader use the same sound card.

The Anakin, Luke, Mace and Obi-wan use the same sound card.

This info is per Alex[Ultra]

The bad guy sabers sound slightly different on power up and down than the good guys. Also the good guy sabers have an extra clash sound, which the bad guy sabers don't.

I don't have a sound problem anymore, I already said I'm getting a maul double ended saber. And btw, this is a lot more expensive than a shirt and it is my first saber and it may be my last so don't you think I have the right to be a little indecisive if I have to use the same saber over and over I want it to be what I like.

Just pointing out that the subject of color has come up in several different threads,[;)]

A point of order:

I've an 05 Anakin and the Luke sound card installed in my TCSS. The Luke has a decidedly deeper idle than the Anakin. Granted, they may have the same components, but they must be set..differently. I don't know what else could account for the deeper idle.

You don't need to see any identification.

Did you contact Ultra about this?

I had considered contacting Ultra about it, but the blade holder issue isn't his fault at all. I knew that it wasn't going to be replaced with a metal sleeve, although I had hoped it wouldn't be an issue. I just swing too hard. :)

The tapping and misalignment issues are a problem, though, since it was a rush job for a convention. My blade went flying several times during a duel. But I figured since Ultra doesn't offer complete blade holder replacements, the other problems aren't a priority at the moment, and can wait.

Yes, I have mentioned my color problem a few times but you have to remember, most of those times where on my threads so it shouldn't really bother other people's.

Tim now has metal conversion kits in stock for the Anakin MR so either order a kit from him or have him upgrade it for you.

I've decided on color now, I'm getting both blades in red and come this christmas I'll probably get another double bladed maul but in a different color allowing me to switch up the color and use all different styles of fighting.

Listen, I'm sorry for the repetitive use and posts of my personal debate but can you understand how hard it would be to only get one saber style, and only one color? If not and it's just me let me know. I know I'm very indecisive but that's just the way I am, I don't like things to turn out wrong and be stuck with them. Again, I'm sorry for that repetive post.

But the Lee filters can "overcolor" and make a dim blade so if you can poke a small hole in the middle like jteph did it looks like it might help. I personally am now officailly aligned with the sith and I don't need any other color besides the red luxeon.

It's a maul FX that I will only make slight modifications to. I will adjust the unit trying to get the sabers easily seperatable as discussed in other threads. I will probably end up doing what stumpy said and do what he said here: http://thecustomsabershop.com/sabers/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=167
