I'm planning to make a short bladed saber, sort of a lightdagger. While I have no problem with the 1"od I am not terribly fond of the fact that the tip does not glow with the rest of the blade. Is it possible to still have an effectively diffused short blade without the mirror in the tip? If so, what would the max effective length likely be? I'm looking at a blade somewhere around 18" or so.

use mylar film in tip instead, cut it slightly smaller than the surface, and light will slide by and light up tip.

You could do that, but you will likely loose brightness because the light will go "past" the tip. Another idea is hotglue, or silicon for those of you in hot areas.
