So the saber hilt building bug has bit me!!!

For the second saber hilt, Im gonna use 2 flashlights, 1 maglite, and 1 Garrity light.

the maglite will be the main hilt and the silver tube, will be powder coated black with a design ( not yet decided) cut out of it.

This will either have a red blade or white blade.

here are the first pics.

Heh... nice to see you took my advice...

I like the idea... I don't think anybody has done an overlay on a maglite.
I'll be watching your career with great interest.....

But yeah, looks good so far.
I think that a red Lux III/P4 would look great on that one...

NEXT LIGHT AND EMITTER@@@@

I like the direction this one is going much better. Is there a reason your overlay is positioned differently then the render? The emitter in the render is way too big IMO.

HAVOK

yup!, the overlay is just ever so slightly to small for the maglite. Even with trying to stretch it, just wouldnt go, so to risk it scratching up the maglite, thats where it ended up.

Im happy with it!

I think it looks kinda cool, where it is.

What color are you planning for it?

HAVOK

Im thinking either red, white or amber

IDK?http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u157/x360graphicsx/Sabers/bladechoices.jpg

I say go red, but then again... i really like to tie in the blade color and hilt...just makes sense to me *shrug*

I say go white for the led color. The hilt has enough color for me as it is.

Also as the emmiter for these flashlight sabers is quite chunky, I'd maybe have some sort of thicker grip material than the rubber O rings to even out the look of the saber. Some cut down T grips might work and by cut down I don't just mean the length but the height as well. They will feel better in you hand with a lower grip height.

Lookin good so far!
I would have to agree with Invisas... I'd vote for white LED since the hilt really does have a lot of nice red in it already. (or perhaps a really bright yellow??)

BTW, what happened to the back scalloped cutouts?

I say red, amber, or red/orange. White always reminds me of fluorescent lights.

How about a blue blade?

Red and blue usually makes for a nice combo...

um no.

red or white, however I went to radio shack and got a 5mm red LED. It blows
there is barely any light being given off by it. I made it soldered into a lightbulb holder, so it fits right into the maglite. Im not happy with the light being given off at all.

I dont know what I should do about the LED, should I get a 10mm and see if that is better? Get a Seuol P4 and figure out a way to get it wired up to the guts of the maglite.??

I dont know

There are colored K2 LED drop in bulb replacements for Maglites. But I don't know how many colors they come in. I've seen green.

Test your Google-fu and try a search for them. ;)

Though I'm not sure how you'd put a blade on that without using the screw on blade holders from the Store.

Im not a big fan of those, while they are easy for the conversion, i just dont like the style for the emitter. Ill post pics of how Im gonna get it all together. I need to order the blade for both of the sabers I made first.

yeah, It looks like they only come in the white or the green. Ive looked

I went back to Radio Shack on lunch and got 2 different LEDs. There both RED

One says "Ultra High Bright 10mm Red LED Intensity 400mcd . Viewing angle 16 degrees. Wave length 660 nm

other is Super-Bright RED LED Intensity 50000 mcd no viewing angle listed. wavelength 660nm

im gonna try both.

You're going to try a 10mm 400mcd led for the main blade led?
That will not be very bright at all. You need to go luxeon or rebel for the blade,
unless I've missed something.

Alright everyone heres what I did,

moved the "guts" of the maglite back. i drilled a new hole for the button, and still need to get some kinda cover. but this way i can get a good 5 -6" into the maglite body itself = strong dueling ... strength.

the first thumb screw is the blade retension screw, second screw is holding the blade reducer in place, third hole is the old button hole, leaving it open so you can see the beam ( see pic 3) and the 4th is the new button hole.

i love it, im ordering my blade tonight, ill get more pics when it comes in.

so the more and more I think about this today..... cause my mind goes crazy while Im at work.....the more Im inclined to take the maglite guts out and install a LED kit from TCSS, the only thing I have a question with is how do I mount the LED Star inside the tube> how do I get it to stay in place?

Shadar Al'Niende

Having never used a maglite i may be missing something, but you would probably have to do something custom as the MHS parts are made for this, maglites are not. :)

Maybe a sinktube blade holder would fit or could be fitted.
or...a maglite blade holder!

custom heatsink and mounting check and figured out.

now i just have to get the LED kit.

HAVOK

so its complete,!!!!!

I just need to get a second blade!!! these pics are with the trans white blade, that I cut down to fit my sons saber (my first build) so its way shorter than I would like.

I went with a custom heatsink and mounting inside the maglite, you can see from the pic, the LED is set behind the original button hole. so the button hole lights up as well.

it is a LUX 1 RED LED Star

SO EXCITED

Looks pretty good!
I like the final design for the emitter shroud. Tre chic.

I would recommend putting something in that hole, though, to protect the lens. It appears to be open to the elements and having that there would bother me.

Secondly, I'd recommend an upgrade to a Lux III or P4 in the near future. The Lux I red is nice, but not nice enough for a hilt like that. ;)

Cool. I agree on the emitter shroud and the hole above the lens. I'd be worried about blinding myself. I'd glue in a piece of nylon. It would light up nicely. Not too crazy about the toggle switch. The other side looked really cool from what I saw before. You should show us the other side too.

Personally I would have started with a mag light blade holder and customized that. You'd have way less holes and bolts.

Nice! I like the deep blade socket, very secure for your kid!

I like how you've just jumped into the building, and haven't even needed to use MHS to make an awesome saber! I am looking forward to seeing your future builds.

did i see a toggle switch? :o:o:o

you know what they say, everytime someone uses a toggle switch....
