View Full Version : "Faraday" power source

G'day, folks:

I was watching late nite television and happened upon a nifty li'l product: the Faraday Flashlight. There are several different brands and styles, but for simplicity's sake, look at it at www.faradayflashlight.com Fairly simple, right?

I bring it up to say this: do you guys think this is feasible for conversion to 'saber construction and use? The theory, in my mind's eye, is pretty sound; a 'saber with a perpetually renewable power source. Running out of charge? Simply shake, spin, or even duel a bit with your 'saber, and it's back to full brightness! Imagine, never having to replace batteries!

Well, that's it. I'd like to know your thoughts, those that are technologically inclined. All other comments, snide remarks, and recipe ideas should be posted in the "Snitz" thread.

You don't need to see any identification.

There's an interesting thought. Any idea how much power those put out?

not a lot. its running a few small LED's probably 20-30 ma ones, compared to the 1400 or 900ish ma the luxeon needs. easy way to try would be to go buy one and hotwire the luxeon to the output though.

hmmm hmmmm whooosh hmmmm whooosh crackel

I've used one of those before...

It would make the Lux LED flash, and then die. Even if you shook it all day.

That would be cool though!

No wonder it never won out over the battery.

my wife picked up one and i took it apart, the slder goes back and forth building up a charge that is then stored in a storage capacitor. the power is then drawn from this sotrage capacitor to run the lights. now then, i wonder if you made a large enough one to fit inside a hilt and a larger storage capacitor, i wonder if it might not work. granted not for long i suspect, but a possibilty.

Have you ever tried to shake a PolyC saber that vigorously?

I know… You'd have to make the blade very easy to remove, but you'd be doing it every 30sec, even with a real good capacitor.

If you could get it to work, it would be more of a novelty because it would be such a PITA to run.

Maybe it should be in the form of a battery pack so you can easily change it out when you’re sick of shaking it all the time. lol

well i knew it wouldnt be practical. mainly cuz of the size it would have to be to even generate enough charge storage to run it. your right, it would only stay on for a very short time. too much draw.

That's pretty much what I thought. I was thinking of something along the lines of that whole kinetic motion watch thing. "The watch that never needs winding", and all that.

See? That's why you guys get paid the big bucks!

I'll just use this poorly drawn "ROTFL" Smily... http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_rofl2.gif

I think I'll leave it up for a limited time only...

Then I think I'll comment... lol

Well it could work during the dueling as your lightsaber is in constant motion during that time anyway.

even then, i dont think it would generate enough power to run the luxeon.

someone i guess could try it and let us know what happens.

Funny, I got one like that for christmas and first thing I thought was Lightsaber! I may pick an extra up and see what happens.

I have a flashlight that works similarly with a crank. The LEDs on it are fairly bright, but still nowhere near as bright as a luxeon. One of the first things I noticed was that it required a few minutes of cranking with the lights off to give it a decent charge, and the LEDs only stay bright for about that long. Even if the LEDs in the flashlight have similar power needs as a luxeon (which they don't) you would only be able to run your saber for about three minutes before it would begin to dim. Add to that the fact that a battery takes up much less space than one of these generators and you'll quickly realize that this is not really a viable option for saber builders. I would also suggest that if you are determined to test this for yourself, try using a multimeter rather than actually hooking up a luxeon. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble this way.
