I hope this is the right forum[:D]
I am hoping to build a Yoda lightsaber but am a little stumped.[:)] I am going to be using a heiland 2 cell flashgun(I know its bigger than the original but I don't care) What has me stumped is the emitter shroud. Does anyone have any idea on how to make an approximation of one of these? I haven't worked with metal all that much so I am a little hesitant to proceed. Are there any tricks to making one of these, or special tools I need? Should I use steel or aluminum? I see a couple of the members here have ones posted in the pics and was hoping they could help me out. GeluKhanGharr has a sweet one posted in the pic topic.

Dremel... it's your friend. If you have metal snips and don't mind filing the edges I'm sure that could work too, but cutting it out with a dremel and sanding drum has to be faster. I'm actually doing one now... a kid on the block want's one bad. It's oversized from the praco, but right on for the MR version.

Aluminum for sure I'd say. It'd be easier to cut and just polish that shroud up.[:D]

aviator, I have made 2 sabers with yoda shrouds. One was made of steel, the other of copper. The steel one, I cut from a 1.5 mill thick sheet with a saw and then gave it a finish with the dremmel and fine files. The copper one I cut from a piece of copper pipe with a dremmel and then hammered it flat, then bent it into the shroud shape.
Here's an approximation of the shape I cut.

[Ignore the beige asterixes if you see them]
The bottom part wraps around the emitter in a groove I cut so it has more stability. The top part you bend into the shroud shape.
I hope this helps.

***EDIT ***

xwing, I see you beat me to it....again [:)]
Only one observation: - no aluminium if you want it to stay in place. Yes, it will be easy to cut, but the narrow section will be too weak to keep the top part in place and it will end up bending all over the place. Go with something harder. Copper works well if you don't mind the color, or you can paint it.

Thanks alot you guys! I had wondered about the material b/c I thought aluminum might be a little to pliable. Thanks for the illustration Gelu. That should help alot when I try to make mine. I think I might try the steel first; if it doesn't work out I will try the copper. After I cut the shroud and polish it, should I use a clear coat to seal it so it won't tarnish?

I did that on the outside after I sanded it well. On the inside I darkened it with a plumbing burner and let it tarnish so it looks like it was burned by the energy from the blade. Do the burning first, then the sanding and clear coat.

I used steel on my first because it was readily available. You could get a thicker gauge I guess. No copper for me... that stuff is 'spensive.[:p]

go to your local hardware store and look for the small sheets they sell. theyre not real big in size. look for a thick gage of stainless steel. or the heavy gage aluminum. i made a vader belt hook for my saber for the rubies belt outta the heaviest gage they had, and it was easy to cut and sand smooth. and pretty darn stout so as not to bend around or anything.
