I ran across these while looking for parts (for my steampunk-clockwork rifle).
They were originally intended for model airplanes, they're currently out of stock, and they're $135; but they look promising none the less.

From the site:

Features:
Fully customer programmable.
Large sound library of original recordings (f.e. Corsair, ME109, Spitfire, Cessna, dif. Trucks)
Sound quality 22KHz
16Mbit Soundmemory, enough for 93s of soundrecordings
Internal 1,2W amplifier at 8 Ohm speakers
Up to 6 electronic switching outputs
-activated by sound (f.e. Muzzle flashing with MG sound) or independant operation
- permanent, momentary or flashing mode adjustable
- direction flashing
Two digital inputs for triggering sounds by a external signal
(f.e. Screaming tires at touch down, triggered by a switch)
Two servo signal outputs, f.e. for retractable landing gears
All connections made by plugs, no solderwork necessary
Receiver signals are used for speed information, this allows brushless or DC Motor usage
Fully assembeled in SMD technology (no heavy, vibration sensitive components)
All wires included
Small and light
USB or RS232 programing interface by external adaptor (optional)
Can be fully configured with free PC software: Download here
- you can make your own sound creation or use the original Benedini sounds
-Firmware update, your unit can be updated by your own with the latest software
Plays two sounds simultaneously (engine plus a special sound) from TBS Flash Ver. 1.0.1.0 on

Technical Spec:

Interested to see what the sound techs make of this.

Nova? Erv?

If this becomes mainstream saber tech, I wonder how long it will take for that company to work it out, rename it, and double the price

I take it that there are few Luxeons in model airplanes? :)

.raw? .wav?.mp3? what audio files does it play? I didnt see it..

Looking at the price... I don't think it's worth it. It has all these useless features that we don't need in sabers, so I'm not sure.

Lets wait for the seniors to pitch in.

As usual with this sort of thing... well, I'd say it's worth someone testing it out.

I wouldn't personally test it out--I don't have any use for it, but I suppose (according to what I THINK I'm seeing)... you could get:

* Hum
* Trigger clashes with a button (?)
* Trigger something else with a button, like lockup/blasters, whatever
* I... THINK poweron and off?? Probably

But I don't think you'd have much on motion. Although I SUPPOSE that could (might???) be able to get done separately by using the little spring sensors and ball-bearing sensors that are common to MR boards... and which Tim is selling in the store. Not sure though.

Perhaps a motion sensor could be installed for the second digital input, giving it a swing sound. The ability to play two sounds at once means decent blending of the hum and the swings and clashes. Also, since it has outputs that can be linked to certain sounds, you may be able to do flash-on-clash with this. It seems perfectly capable of handling the voltages we need for our leds, so I think this has quite a lot of potential. Great find.

Sound like some potential.

If not for sabers maybe some sounds for your x-wing etc.

Mixing the hum with the other effects is easy with Erv's Saber Sound Mixer (http://www.plecterlabs.com/Media/SaberSoundMixer.zip), a beautiful little piece of software. :D

Otherwise, if this is viable, I do look forward to seeing the results.

It didn't even occur to me to use it for what it was intended for. This would be a great upgrade for a Millennium Falcon kit!

the servo outputs could be used for rumble, and overdrive.
