I am wanting to make a Star Wars Fan Film. I have always wanted an Obi Wan Episode Style 1 saber. I cannot make ne because when it comes to building things I am an idiot. I do not need expensive LED blades or anything like that. I plan on adding in the effect in post production. I do not have hundreds of dollars to spend. I really need some help. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The saber needs to be able to hold some sort or blade like a lightweight aluminum rod like used in the movies, or a wooden dowlrod. But the rod must be able to be removed just in case it brakes during use. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Here is a reference picture of the style that I love just n case you arent sure what I am talking about.

You have three basic choices. You can either:

a) Invest in the Modular Hilt System. These kits simply screw together and since you are not interested in electronics, well, it would be an easy route.

b) You could contact Tim, he and his wife run this forum which is connected to the Custom Saber Shop. If he is too busy, then you

c) Contact UltraSaber. He offers excellent work at really good prices.

I would recommend a) since you could have the talent build their own if need be.. or your stunt coordinator can build and test them for weighting.

Another option would be to buy all the pieces you need from Tim, Ship them to one of the many sabersmiths here.. perhaps Do-Clo, or X-Wing? I'm sure you could work out something close to an arm or a leg. Basically you have options, but posting "Can someone do all the work for me" might not get you very far without a price attached.

You DO realize that this is a forum for a store? And not exactly a public one? We are kind of here to encourage each other to buy parts and make sabers from the store this forum is attached to.

I hope you're not looking for hand outs.[xx(]

I would buy stuff. I would just like someone to point me in the right direction because this is the first time I have ever tried to do something like this and I have no idea what I am doing. So get off my back.

There is a link at the top of the page it says "Click here to enter store"... you then have access to an amazing shop.

Give it a try!

Excuse me, before you get all in a huff.. I offered you some valid points of interest. I also offered you names of people who could assist you...

What more could I offer you?

And the one thing that I asked after getting accused of wanting a handout was how I could ge a hold of these people. I am new to the whole "message board" thing and I do not know how they work.

The easiest way is to surf around. I would really recommend talking with either Tim "Strydur" whom is the shop owner, or UltraSaber though he has been busy lately and doesn't come to the board as often.

Tim can offer you help on everything in the shop through the link above.
Ultra has his own site though he builds from parts he gets from here. His website is: here (http://www.ultrasabers.com/).

As for Do-Clo or Xwing.. just surf around the board.. take a peek at the galleries and PM the people whom have a design you like. Keep in mind that none of us work for Tim and may not have the time to build for your film.

How far before you start shooting?

Ok everybody step back for a moment. MB due to alot of our past experiences alot of people do want hand outs. Now we have established you don't, which is good. Now I would suggest investing in a MHS setup and sink tube like I suggested in the chat earlier.

Or contact Ultra aswell, he works with Tim's parts alot and can help you immensely.

As for the aluminum rods your interested in for blades Tim currently does not carry them I think randomsabers.com still has some in stock though.

Let's define your needs. Are you aware of the issues they had on the set with the aluminum rods and why the switched to some carbon type rod? But most importantly, How many sabers do you need in total?

For now I need one. I will eventually need atleast one more. So approximately 2 total. Thanks for the randomsabers website. This looks like a place that I can get what I need. What is the problem with aluminum blades? other than being a little heavier than a carbon blade.

They bend really easily. Carbon fiber doesn't bend, and it is very strong and light. They sell them at randomsabers.

Random has an extremly long wait time and he WILL NOT do the movie sabers. For legal reasons he won't touch designs that are too close.

You could make a really easy one out of the stuff here with a polycarbonate blade.

If you want to really duel aluminum is not the best. It will bend. PolyC or Carbonfiber will be rigid and light without permenantly bending if struck too hard.

More than an aluminum rod would....its kinda springy....dosn't create the impact on hands wrists and such like aluminum would.

Well, it does bend... otherwise it couldn't take impacts. The more rigid it is the more likely it like will either shatter or bend (permenantly that is).

Has anyone been able to get their hands on a carbo fiber blade? What is that like? I found some on the net but they run about $32 a peice before the extra set thing you have to buy to make it fit in your saber. I was just wondering if it was worth it. Supposeble carbon fiber was what they used in the movies! RIGHT?

They used carbon fiber rods in the ep3 duals but unless you are doing some hardcore dualing and/or rotoscoping it I am not sure of the need for one for the reasons you stated. I was going to get one just because but by the time I counted up the blade and the adapter I could start making another hilt[:D]
