Saw the maglite blade holders in the store, am i right in saying they are new or did i just miss seeing them for a while. Either way they look interesting to me in that they give one the ability to produce a stunt saber with no sound of course for a base of 60 bucks includeing shipping. Also if you do a little work with an overlay you can almost completely diguse the fact it started as a maglite. have to wonder how hard it would be to get one of these pommels http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/MPS-Pommel-style-3-v2-P90.aspx
made to just slip over the screw off bottom battery cap on the c or d cell maglites. Lots of possibilities for saber with these. Planning to order one soon as i get paid. Any one got any thoughts on this.

I think it's pretty cool for the budget conscience people who are new to sabers...and for those of us who may need a saber in a pinch ;)

I think it's awesome. It's also a good way to build an inexpensive collection of sabers to start a saber dueling club.

It opens a new category of saber. We'll have pvc, sinktube, MHS and now maglite.

What I like most about it is that maglites have a recessed power switch, they should make awesome stunt sabers. Great for spinning and other "flash" tricks.

And once the people with powder coating abilities get a hold of these I think we're gonna see some slick sabers.

Don't forget machined customs now.

The great thing about these is that it appears you can attach it simply and it's good to go, so no wiring, sleds/chassis, packing, and all the other headaches.
It's also great to have something for heavy dueling, for a quest, or the younglings.

I would love to see some demos and reviews!

I just bought one and I'm looking forward to messing around with it.

Wish they had these a year ago when I made a saber from a maglite, s/s tube and parts from a joe jedi. Would have been so much easier.

Wow that's a nice looking saber! I would have never known it was a maglite unless you said so.

And those massive C or D cells will provide some impressive runtimes!
The only problem is that these are useless on the old krypton gas bulbs. Only the new LED ones can make a white blade.

There are colored k2 replacments that you can get.

Search young one.

Yes, and colored k2s. ;)

They are out there, but a pain to find specific colors.

Found a brand at this site: http://led-flash-lights.com/ (http://led-flash-lights.com) whose by extension is an amazon.com seller. Comes in green, red/orange, and cyan (diamond-LED.com is what the thing says, but the site doesn't work). Found a couple whites at amazon.com. They are K2 from what I can tell.

Terralux has ones for their minimags (called TLE-5, only 1-watt) in white, blue, green, amber, red/orange, and UV. There's an adapter that lets you use the minimag leds in the larger 2+ C/D maglites. They have standard (40 lumens I think) and extreme(140 lumens)) versions. They do have dedicated ones for the C/D's (called TLE-6), but they're only white (at least that I've found). They also have an extreme version of the TLE-6, 140 lumens, but make sure you get the right one for the right maglite TLE-6EX (4-6 cell) and TLE-6EXB (2-3 cell).

Here's the adapter for the TLE-5 led
http://www.batteryjunction.com/ba-2.html

On their website is a list of various retailers, including a rather nice list of online retailers.
http://www.terraluxcorp.com/terralux/
This retailer in particular has a "billet end cap" for D maglites to help it stand better and stop it from rolling away. Also makes for a simplistic pommel wheel. They also have window spike breaker end caps for D maglites.
http://www.offroadtrailtools.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=522

This retailer also has links to reviews on the Terralux replacement bulbs. It also supplies two other brands of led replacement bulbs.
http://ledsupply.com/led-flashlights.php

There's lots of white LED bulb replacements, some with 140 lumens (only K2 as far as I've been able to find), so a color disc could work. I did find out that for some of them, at elast from what the websites said, you have to use dummy batteries for the 3+ C/D maglites otherwise you burn it out. In the end, most cost between $20-50, give or take.

Also found these guys while snooping around. They're as crazy for custom flashlights as we are for custom lightsabers, and they use the same tech too. Lux, Cree, Seoul, ect...

Thinking I might get more involved in making custom maglite sabers to offer if I can ever find some time, motivation, and a larger budget for my entertainment fund :D

A 2C cell maglite with a diamond led green Lux3 replacement LED. Blade is an Ultrasabers 'fiber optic' blade that I have had for a couple years. I got the Diamond LED unit years ago when they first came out. I usually have it in a 3D cell maglite but swapped it out to the 2C cell and added the adapter and blade and gave it to my son to play with.

I think you can also get these maglites in anodized colors, too!
I tripped across a blue one in a Home Depot near me.

AceRocket,

How's the dueling with the MagLite Hilt?

I don't really know. I gave it to my son and he is only 5 so he doesn't hit that hard with it. It has a 1" thick wall blade and I think it sits just a litle deeper than a standard MHS bladeholder will hold a blade so I don't think there is any danger of breaking the holder. I went with the 2 x C cell flashlight because it's all I had. My 3 x D cell is definitely brighter with the same LED but too heavy and long for my son. I think a 3 x C would be best for kids and large adults could use a 3 x D cell with no problems. The one caveat would be that the C and D cell alkaline batteries make for a heavier saber. I may try and strip the anodizing from the 2 x C cell someday (it was a gift froma company I did business with and has their logo ont he side) and make a custom battery holder to fit in a couple li-ion cells. Maybe trick it out with some other machining or something too.

In my opinion, these are a nice saber and I don't think you would do much damage unless you gorilla duel with it (but then I wouldn't gorilla duel with any saber for fear of breaking it). They are great for the lay-person with limited skills/tools that wants a basic light up only saber. It does not take any tools or special skills to build one. The only thing you need is an allen wrench to tighten or loosen the blade. Very builder freindly if you will.

That looks... pretty great, actually.

I've got a few belt-hangers planned, but a Maglite saber might be my first lighted blade. Sound isn't a priority for me, so this would be a good first step.

In searching around for information on LED conversions, I found this website (http://www.nickleplated.com/magmod/index.html). It's not a kit, but a DIY guide on how to convert a 3-C Maglite to power a Lux3 LED.

I'm still relatively new to this whole thing, but I would think that would open the doors for people to use the colored LEDs they are accustomed to using. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that, or if that guy's giving bad advice.

Edit- I just bought a 1.5" Sinktube today, and just measured it against a D-Cell Maglite. The Maglite is just about the same size as a 1.5" Sinktube (the Maglite's OD is larger by a hair), for purposes of overlays and whatnot.

Hey, just because it's economical, doesn't mean it can't be embellished!

Nice find on the convesion site, a little more complicated then buying the presetup K2 but cool. Also i was thinking that pvc or abs might fit over a d-cell maglite. I need to go to the hardware store and check. But could work for an overlay.

Yeah, there is some that might work.

After having dug around in the Big Yellow Box (http://bigyellowbox.tripod.com/index.htm) for some time, I know that his Saber Style VII (http://bigyellowbox.tripod.com/plans07/main.htm) consists of a 1.5" Sink Tube with a PVC overlay. I'm not sure how tight the fit is, or if a Maglite would work well with it, but it's a starting point.

He used "1.25" 160PSI PVC" (Pics (http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2071&stc=1&d=1266360470) here (http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2072&stc=1&d=1266360511)) which he claims to have found at Lowe's.

Hope that helps somebody!

I have some of that PVC, which my Lowe's no longer carries. I got mine in 2002, which I also heard about at the BYB site. I used it to make grips on my sink tube EL saber that I built that year (before this place existed).

It's a very tight fit over the end of my D-cell Maglight. It could get stuck at the knurled parts if you didn't sand the inside of it a bit.

The black abs 1.5" at the hardare store fits it also but might be a bit thick for an overlay. Also there are some electrical box conection parts at home depot. that fit over the end of a maglite and make for an interesting pommel.

So sorry if this is a noobish question, but if I don't want to switch out the LED and just use colored lenses, do I only need a maglite and the blade holder? The descirption mentions a 'lens holder' but I couldn't find one in the store...

I'm really interested in using this as my first saber, since I currently have no wiring/soldering experience.

Well the 'optics' on the torch is actually the reflector. I.E The part you screw off. So you need to put in a different, smaller lens. Lenses and lens holders can be found here (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Hilt-Electronics-C17.aspx).

Colored disks can be found here (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/12-Colored-Discs--P164.aspx). They basically change the colour of the blade, as the torch LED is white.
