...be gentle. ;-)

Before anyone slams me, please read my intro here:

http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showthread.php?t=10019

This is my 1st attempt at building my own. So far I have (or am waiting for):

Vader MR FX Sound Board
1 x Luxeon III Star LED - Royal Blue Lambertian, 340 mW @ 700mA
(LXHL-LR3C)
1 x LXHL-NX05 Luxeon Collimator Lens (LXHL-NX05)
the MHS speaker/battery combo
Shouldered 1" thin walled blade tip with reflective disc
Polycarbonate Tubing, 3/4" ID x 1" OD x 1/8" Wall, Clear Color
"momentary spst contacts normally open" switch
a variety of "stuff" to make the hilt with!
My father-in-law has the tools etc. needed.

Need to get:
Roll of cellophane wrapping
2.2ohm 5w resistor
Copper MHS LED Mount/Heatsink
a retention screw

Lots of patience and imagination!

Am I missing anything or do I have anything wrong? Thanks in advance!

The Vader sound board requires a latching switch, not a momentary. There is a modification that can be done to use a momentary with that type of board, but I'd keep it simpler with your first build.

What are you going to be using for the actual hilt? I know you said in your other thread, things "from around the house", but you haven't mentioned what yet.

I see a lens, but not a lens holder on your list. Do you already have some heat shrink, or some extra wire?

Hi, and welcome.

It looks like you ordered a thin-wall blade tip but thick wall polycarbonate. If you did, the tip won't fit. The thin wall tip is for a blade with a 7/8" ID.

The "momentary spst contacts normally open" switch, if it did not also say "push on/off," may not work. I'm not positive on this, so someone else will have to chime in, but I think the Vader MR board requires a latching switch.

Other than that I don't see anything... unless you want to elaborate on the nature of the "variety of "stuff"" which is kind of vague...

EDIT: Ah, J-lo, beat me to it!

But I missed the blade tip and blade tube discrepancy. ;)

And you are correct, Luke, the momentary, "push on/push off" switch in the Store does work like a latching switch, those are what I use.

Thanks for the helpful replies so far. I found the switches I mentioned in my father-in-laws garage and was not sure they'd work.

Would this one work?

Will these tips be what the dr. ordered? ;-)

http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Shouldered-1-thick-walled-blade-tip-with-reflective-disc--P139.aspx

For the hilt I'm using the standard sink 1.5 inch pipe, a sink drain pipe (ala Obi wan type deal), some pump sump hose and/or vacuum hose for grips, found some other odds and ends that look like they'll make a good pomel, o rings, and maybe some "decorative" items. I'm going to keep it simple for my first try. I do have heat shrink and extra wires.

I really should have posted first because I'm ending up paying for S&H three times due to my own impatience! What would Yoda say?! ;-)

That switch will work, but I'd recommend this one:

That way, your blade LED won't switch off if you bump the button while you're spinning it or whatever. They are the ones I use.

That's the right tip for the thick walled blades, as you can see by the description. :p

Yoda would probably say, "Patience you must have, Padawan, yes." ;)

I thought that MR Boards need latching and that switch, J-Lo is momentary? I have never used an FX board so I may be missing something here but it seems incorrect to me.

SPST Push on/off - Momentary switch. This switch works as a normal latching on/off switch with one difference. When off you can lightly press to momentarily turn on. When latched on if you accidentally tap the switch it won’t momentarily flash off.

MR boards do need latching switches.

So this would be the way to go?

It would work, but the one J-lo posted would work better.

Look at it this way: there is basically one difference between these two switches.

The switch you posted, if you bump it while it is off, nothing happens. If you bump it while it is on, it momentarily turns off (until the "bump" is over)

The switch J-lo posted, if you bump it while it is off, it flashes on momentarily. If you bump it while it is on, nothing happens.
That's why it's better. It is still a latching switch.

Ok... now even now that's got me all fuzzwangled

I say follow the man's advice and order the switch J-Lo advised

The button locks, so it acts like a latching switch.

Don't think about it too much, just trust me. I'm one of the people that asked Tim to carry those particular Judco switches. ;)

Well, thanks again. I've ordered what I hope are the last pieces I need to give this a go. Will let you know how it turns out. :-)

Take her adivice, A lot of times you just need to smile and nod, and do what the veterans tell you.

Later after you have done it, everything will become clear...
(or it won't, but you'll still have a working lightsaber...)
